Chapter 426: A Remake of "Dream of the Red Chamber"?
Zeng Li entered the kitchen, closed the door, and shouted, "Don't come in, I'm going to cook."
Cheng Sheng smiled and shook his head upon hearing this; he was just trying to scare Zeng Li.
Hearing the sound of the range hood coming from the kitchen, Cheng Sheng didn't bother Zeng Li. Instead, he went to the bedroom, grabbed some underwear, and went into the bathroom.
After washing away his fatigue, Cheng Sheng sat on the living room sofa in a bathrobe and turned on the television.
Cheng Sheng watched the entertainment channel, since he was in the entertainment industry and naturally wanted to see the entertainment news first.
While these news reports shouldn't be taken too seriously, some of them do have some credibility. After all, this is Kyoto TV's arts and culture channel, and they wouldn't report random and untrue news.
There are two hosts, Gong Ning and Gao Lei, both of whom are well-known hosts who have hosted many programs.
As soon as she opened her mouth, Gong Ning dropped a bombshell.
Cheng Sheng was stunned when he saw it.
A remake of "Dream of the Red Chamber"!
This is absolutely a major event in the television industry.
Because of the success of the 87 version of "Dream of the Red Chamber", and because filming this drama required a lot of manpower and resources, many directors had the idea but hesitated to take the plunge.
This time, they're serious. Not only have they confirmed a remake, but they've also launched a nationwide talent search for "Dream of the Red Chamber" cast, selecting important roles like the "Twelve Beauties" from among newcomers. This is undoubtedly a risky move, but also a great way to promote the show.
Cheng Sheng had to admit that the event was really attractive. The host revealed that thousands of ordinary people participated in the casting call, and even some actors who were already somewhat famous lowered their standards to participate in the audition.
Although the publicity was very effective and caused a national sensation, Cheng Sheng was not optimistic. After all, the 87 version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" was too classic, and it was probably impossible to surpass it.
Moreover, if the filming is not done well, it may be met with criticism from fans.
As one of the Four Great Classical Novels, "Dream of the Red Chamber" has been adapted into numerous versions, but overall, the CCTV version is considered the most classic.
The 87 version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" also has the highest rating on Douban, with a score of 9.7.
The second highest-rated film should be "Little Actors' Dream of the Red Chamber: Grandma Liu Enters the Grand View Garden", which has a Douban rating of 9.1.
The entire cast of this drama consists of children, who are incredibly cute and deliver very vivid performances, making it a real slap in the face to the rest of the "Dream of the Red Chamber" adaptations.
The third highest score is the 89 mainland Chinese version of "Dream of the Red Chamber," with all six versions averaging around 8.2.
The cast of these six installments is comprised of a host of big names: Xia Qing, Fu Yiwei, Liu Xiaoqing, Zhao Lirong... The actors' performances are commendable, and the plot and dialogue are quite good.
There's also the 1962 Yue Opera version of "Dream of the Red Chamber," which also features heavily altered plots. It's hard to say how much it would be criticized today.
Wang Wenjuan, who played Lin Daiyu, was 35 years old at the time.
The entire plot differs greatly from the original work, and even adds unnecessary scenes, making it unbearable to watch.
Even fans of the original novel would shake their heads in disbelief.
The 1977 Hong Kong version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" has a rating of around 7.4.
The film featured a host of Hong Kong stars, all of whom were big names in the industry. It would be nearly impossible to find them all to film a movie today.
Although there are many big stars, Cheng Sheng believes that the plot is a terrible movie. For example, the opening scene shows Jiao Da picking up Lin Daiyu and saying things like "Good girl Lin jumped into the fire" and "Only those two stone lions are clean," which is plagiarizing lines from Liu Xianglian in the original novel. Baoyu plays with a windmill to see Lin Daiyu enter the mansion.
Jia Zheng slapped Baoyu three times and kicked him once. Was he a martial arts master?
When Baoyu fell ill and saw that the self-propelled boat was being carried by two people, Cheng Sheng didn't even want to curse anymore.
Especially when Lin Daiyu died and Jia Baoyu went to mourn, the parrot suddenly said, "Baoyu, hello, Baoyu." Not only was Baoyu startled, but Cheng Sheng was also startled. It felt like the movie had turned into a horror film. No wonder it's the Hong Kong version of "Dream of the Red Chamber." This was simply superfluous.
According to Cheng Sheng, the film's 7.4 rating is entirely due to the large number of stars in it; the plot adaptation is simply too poor.
There is also an earlier film adaptation of "Dream of the Red Chamber," released in 1944, which has a rating of 6.8, making it a passable film.
The plot of this film has also been changed a lot.
For example, Xue Pan tricked Jia Baoyu by saying that Jia Zheng had summoned him, but here it was changed to Baochai tricking Jia Baoyu.
While watching a play at Qingxu Temple, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu were being intimate. Baochai was displeased and afterwards said, "Li Kui is scolding Song Jiang," mixing up the lines.
Before the 87 version, this version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" had a great influence at the time, and the plots of various related "Dream of the Red Chamber" movies and TV series were imitated, adapted, or even plagiarized from it.
It has already adapted "Dream of the Red Chamber" itself, and other later film and television dramas have copied and adapted it, truly 'making absurdity into absurdity'.
The 96 CTS version of "Dream of the Red Chamber".
This is the best adaptation of the story. It doesn't portray Baochai negatively, and it especially depicts the deep sisterly bond between Lin Daiyu and Baochai, which is excellent.
It's full of beautiful women, especially the actresses who play Baochai and Fengjie, they're exceptionally beautiful.
Unfortunately, the costumes, makeup, and props in this drama were terrible, and it had too much of a Taiwanese drama feel, similar to the style of "The Legend of the White Snake".
The 2010 version of "Dream of the Red Chamber".
This version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" is the worst of the worst, the kind you shouldn't watch.
After the show aired, it caused a train wreck of a reaction, with one-sided criticism, ridicule, and mockery. It seemed that apart from further elevating the status of the 87 version of "Dream of the Red Chamber", it was utterly worthless.
This drama is also the one referred to as "Dream of the Red Chamber" on television.
The drama began its casting and promotion this year, but it was not released until 2010.
This drama is directed by Li Shaohong, who remakes "Dream of the Red Chamber" in a fictionalized way.
This version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" mainly tells the love story of "Bao, Dai, and Chai", and exaggerates this emotional line.
But is "Dream of the Red Chamber" simply a story about love?
The novel is set against the backdrop of the rise and fall of the four great families of Jia, Shi, Wang, and Xue. It is told from the perspective of Jia Baoyu, a wealthy young master, and focuses on the tragic love and marriage between Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, and Xue Baochai. It depicts the various aspects of life of beautiful young women who are more refined and insightful than men, showcasing the true beauty of humanity and the beauty of tragedy. It can be said to be an epic work that shows the beauty of women and the various aspects of ancient Chinese society from various angles.
However, this version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" not only changed the main storyline, but also completely altered the main characters in the book. Lin Daiyu can be fat, and Baochai can be thin.
When asked by reporters, the director actually tried to argue: "I think looks are secondary; charisma is the most important. Their performances make you feel that such people really exist in real life. It's pointless to just talk about whether the actors are fat or thin." (End of Chapter)
