Chapter 68, Section 25: Caring and Not Caring

Chapter 68, Section 25: Caring or Not Caring
—Seagull Street. Residential Buildings—

The scene shifts to midnight.

The orange streetlights illuminated the silhouettes of two people.

"Thank you, Mr. Brandt, I'm home!"

Nicole stood at the foot of the stairs leading to the apartment building, smiling and waving goodbye to Brandt, the drummer of the band beside her. Because she had tomorrow off, the middle-aged supervisor had arranged for her to leave work early today.

Fearing it might be unsafe to go home too late, Brant drove Nicole back—he also lived in the Seagull Street area.

“Okay, please give my regards to Leon,” Brandt replied.

"Ok!"

Nicole watched him walk a few steps away, then turned and hurried upstairs. She had been staying at the bar for several days and missed it terribly.

I wonder if coming home so suddenly will give my husband a big surprise?

Nicole walked along, thinking happily, until she reached her front door. She took out a key from a metal box next to her—the one that used to hold letters—and inserted it into the lock to open the door.

Noticing the light at the door, Nicole knew her husband wasn't asleep yet, so she called out after opening the door:

"I'm back!"

Suddenly, rustling and frantic tinkering sounds came from the bedroom.

?

Nicole was a little puzzled, but she still went over to see what Mr. Curiosity was doing.

The bedroom door was pushed open.

He Ye sat somewhat awkwardly at the desk, the drawer underneath not fully closed, as if it had been opened not long ago. A diary lay on top of it. He turned around somewhat uncomfortably to greet Nicole, as if he had just noticed her return home.
"Uh, Nicole, what brings you back... Did you come to get something?"

Nicole was a little confused, but she still replied, "I came back because I have a day off tomorrow, and it's so boring staying in the bar without seeing you!"

"Is that so? Haha..."

"Sir, what were you doing just now?"

"."

A moment later, the scene that ended the conversation showed Nicole holding her clothes, being pushed out by He Ye.

She was a little doubtful, but remembering He Ye's suggestion, she grabbed a change of clothes and prepared to take a shower. After all, she had been working all day and was sweaty, so she naturally needed to shower as soon as she got home; otherwise, it would be a real headache if her husband complained.

After sending Nicole into the bathroom, He Ye felt relieved and sat down at the table to reopen the drawer.

There were several sexy magazines lying in the drawer.

It wouldn't be good for minors to see these things, so He Ye picked them up and decided to put them somewhere—he didn't expect Nicole to come back so suddenly. Although he said he was letting her stay here, it was still too scary for her to come home so quietly.

Soon, after about ten minutes.

Nicole had finished showering and came out. She stood at the door in slippers, wearing a rather thin dress.

The girl's shoulders were rosy and glossy, and two white straps held up the entire dress, revealing glimpses of her waist and fair arms. Most importantly, her collarbone was tinged with color and glistening with water droplets.

"gentlemen?"

He Ye was genuinely engrossed in writing in his diary this time and didn't notice—it had been four hours since he returned from Monica's place. During those four hours, he had been going through the past and reflecting on life, because those people were a part of his life. That sentence lingered in his mind, making him sentimental and falling into silence.

But as he pondered this further, he noticed that the little yellow book in the corner had gone astray.

At this point, I stopped writing and turned around.

Nicole got very close and could smell the scent of a young girl.

"..." He Ye paused for a moment, then closed the diary and coughed twice. "Are you done washing up? If you're done, then get ready to go to sleep."

"My hair isn't dry yet, I'll have to wait a bit."

Nicole said a little shyly that she noticed her husband didn't seem to look at her much, and she felt a little disappointed.

Seeing this, He Ye didn't mind and sat there to chat with her for a while. He turned around and put his hands on the back of the chair, as if listening to a child who came home once a week talking endlessly about life.

The two chatted about what had happened in the past few days.

Nicole vividly described what happened at the bar to him. The bar band had a new lead singer, but their popularity had declined significantly. It wasn't that the new lead singer performed poorly, but rather that everyone preferred He Ye's songs.

Miss Bena taught her how to make new drinks, and she can now mix more than twenty kinds of drinks.

Mr. Brooke also said that it was boring to sleep alone in his room at night because no one talked to him about dreams like "what would I do if I had ten million crowns".

"How have you been these past few days, sir?"

Nicole finished speaking and asked happily, her hair already clean.

He Ye thought for a moment and casually made up a few words, saying that he was just an ordinary police officer and there was nothing to talk about.

This made Nicole a little unhappy, and she pouted slightly.

However, as He Ye patted her head, the touch made Nicole feel at ease—the man's fingers were rubbing through her hair, a warm touch.

"Let's go to sleep once our hair is dry." He Ye withdrew his hand and glanced at his watch. The hour hand was almost pointing to one o'clock in the morning, and he still had to go to work tomorrow.

"Oh, okay." Nicole nodded, then, as if remembering something, asked, "So, are you going to work tomorrow, sir?"

"work."

"Do you get food at your workplace?"

"No...why are you suddenly asking this?" He Ye had already taken off her coat and placed it on the table, then buttoned up her white shirt. A few buttons had been inexplicably undone while she was sleeping earlier, perhaps because they were too loose.

Nicole said earnestly, "I'm bored tomorrow because I have the day off. I can cook for you at home and bring it over!"

He Ye was surprised to hear this, thinking to herself, "So she can cook?" Then, after asking more carefully, she learned that it was Miss Bena who had blown the wind.

She not only taught bartending but also life philosophy, saying that a woman who can cook is charming and can stay at home with a clear conscience. Although He Ye didn't understand, she thought it would be nice to have a meal. But then she thought that cooking and delivering would be too much trouble, and this little one rarely had a day off, so there was no reason to make her work overtime.

"No need, I'll take you out for a nice meal when I get back tomorrow... Let's go to sleep first." He Ye said sleepily, yawning.

"Hmm..." Nicole looked at the bed, seemingly lost in thought.

The lights in Keheye have already been turned off.

The bedroom was shrouded in darkness, with only the hazy moonlight streaming in through the window, a moment of tranquility.

Nicole had no choice but to tiptoe onto the bed. There was only one bed. After lying down, she looked at the man next to her and realized that this was the closest she could get, and it wouldn't matter if she accidentally bumped into him.

However, the two of them slept together without making any other moves, because He Ye had no intention of doing so.

Although it was a little awkward when she got close to him, He Ye attributed his excitement to the aftereffects of the erotic novel, since Nicole had no figure and couldn't attract him at all.

If you put yourself in someone else's shoes—

"Good night."

"Good night."

They were so close they could hear each other breathing. Nicole's cheeks gradually flushed, and her drowsiness subsided. In her eyes, the man was kind, handsome, and liked her, so it was hard for her to remain calm in this situation.

What's worse, the husband is oblivious to his own limitations. He even insisted on sleeping together because there was no second bed and they had to sleep on the floor, fearing he wouldn't be comfortable.

The night is long, and some people are lost in thought.

……

The next day.

"Lang li ge lang lang li ge lang~"

He Ye walked briskly along the streets of Seagull Street, humming a little tune, because he had just picked up ten crowns when he went out. Right at the intersection where he went down the stairs, the bright green banknotes were lying there and he picked them up.

Ten dollars was enough to buy a decent breakfast, so he bought milk and sausage from a street vendor as he passed by before continuing his journey to the police station in charge of intelligence.

More than twenty minutes later.

Good morning, good morning.

The corridors of the police station were filled with officers who had also arrived that morning. They greeted each other, and even He Ye was greeted—he was a little surprised, thinking to himself that he had only been there a few days. Yesterday, he had a rather tense argument with a sergeant. Perhaps it was because of his easygoing personality that he always managed to find someone he clicked with?
Upon closer inspection, the case was solved: it was Officer Lorry.

The two went to the police officer's office together.

After pushing open the door and entering, Loris's desk was empty, so she hadn't arrived yet. He Ye went over and chatted with Officer David—since he had filled in for him yesterday, he naturally received a few words of concern.

Then more police officers arrived one after another.

Rayleigh: "Good morning, good morning, are we on duty today?"

When Riley arrived lazily, the word "on duty" he mentioned made the two regular officers feel a little bitter—because they remembered their job yesterday, which was to monitor Mia and Sir Humphrey.

Stalking is always the most grueling job.

"I guess so," Rory said, snapping out of his reverie.

Seeing this, He Ye casually asked, "Did you find anything?"

Rory: "The two of them didn't meet yesterday. It was just a normal routine—Humphrey rested at his villa in the morning and went to watch horse racing and football in the afternoon."

"Miss Mia spent the whole day at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and didn't go home until seven o'clock in the evening, which may be the reason why the two of them didn't meet."

Rory summarized yesterday's work in just two sentences.

It may seem short, but it was actually nearly ten hours of unwavering surveillance.

As the group chatted, Sergeant Draco, who was passing by, cast his gaze on one of the black-haired auxiliary officers, his expression a mixture of emotions.

In the end, he just smacked his lips and went back to his seat to read the newspaper.

Draco had previously tried to use this guy to embarrass Lorris, but his words yesterday tore through the thin veil, making it seem as if these officers were slandering her out of jealousy.

While that's true in reality, it should be interpreted as a criticism of her personality—people only criticize her because her personality is so bad—that would be a legitimate reason.

Draco couldn't understand why this newcomer would speak up for Loris. He had overheard several people talking this morning about how much bonus Group Four would receive this month, and how several members of their group would probably be promoted by the end of the year.

It's clear that some people are already looking at it differently.

Draco, thinking about this, decided he should make things difficult for this newcomer. Although he couldn't really mess with Loris, a mere auxiliary officer was easy to handle.

He Ye, who was standing next to him, was unaware that someone was eyeing him. After chatting with several people in his group for a few minutes, Loris finally arrived.

She looked a little tired, and was wearing a smart black trench coat instead of a police uniform. When someone saluted and greeted her, she just nodded indifferently, but that was her usual style.

After arriving near the desk.

Good morning, sir.

He Ye observed her as he greeted her, because he remembered what happened yesterday—her somewhat unnatural departure and her slightly stiff voice had not yet been followed up.

After she finished speaking, Loris paused for a moment, glanced at He Ye, and then looked away, saying, "Hmm."

She then sat down at the table to tidy up her things, while David and Officer Rory tacitly left to talk to their colleagues from yesterday and await instructions. Riley eagerly asked her what her task was for the day, and Lorris calmly replied that it was odd jobs.

He Ye simply observed without saying a word throughout.

Then he breathed a sigh of relief, seemingly not taking it to heart.

Although he hoped to win some favor, his performance at the time did make him a little worried... Overall, it was alright if he wasn't being deliberately targeted.

I'll add another chapter tomorrow at noon.

I originally thought I could finish writing this volume by the end of the month, but I feel like I should be able to wrap it up by the 25th. There are only two or three chapters left of the daily life chapters before we enter the final events.
