Chapter 4.4. A grieving heart needs the comfort of alcohol.
The camera turned.
—Inside the Big Bird Spinning Bar—
Brooke, dressed in a bartender's uniform, was wiping the table with a handkerchief. It was five o'clock in the afternoon, a time when the bar was usually deserted.
Unfortunately, someone has now collapsed on the bar counter.
This guy is an old acquaintance, he comes here more often than the bartender, like clocking in for work. Brooke even suspects that this guy is trying to get a job at Big Bird's Bar, what a joke.
He was wearing a British-style trench coat, his hat tossed on the ground, a bottle of draft beer in front of him, muttering, "Waaaaah, my youth..."
What were we talking about last time?
Brooke, holding a handkerchief, wiped the wine jug as he thought about something, like a curvaceous woman being his type and wanting to divorce his current wife.
He even said that his marriage was ordered by his boss. Tsk tsk tsk, what a tragic male protagonist.
"Hey bro, looks like you're upset about something. You can talk to me about it, at least someone will listen and make you feel better."
Brooke rested his elbows on the bar and looked at the familiar stranger with concern.
"..." He Ye raised his flushed face.
After a few seconds of silence—
"Give me two glasses of your strongest liquor!" He Yehao slammed his fist on the table!
Brooke shrugged and didn't ask any further questions. He was just a bartender whose job was to mix drinks, so he nodded in agreement.
"Two large bird mojitos~~~ Just a moment."
He Ye was heartbroken. Her new life was supposed to be full of anticipation, and she had already gotten rid of those guys in the organization. So why did two wonderful things turn out like this?
The original plan was to invite Miss Elsa to spend a day with him, then talk to the director of the orphanage about work, and then find a place to live facing the sea where spring is warm and flowers bloom. All these things were waiting for him to do!
—But after hearing that Miss Elsa was getting married, he lost all motivation.
What bullshit expectations! Let's drink until we drop tonight!
"Damn! Strong liquor really does soothe the soul!"
He Ye drank a large bird mojito and looked drunk, his emotions both excited and depressed.
Wow, it seems he's really hurt by something on his mind. Brooke thought to himself.
Just then, a new customer arrived, and Brooke had no time to pay attention to He Ye. He mixed a new drink to comfort the new customer who was trying to drown his sorrows in alcohol—this guy was a loser who was constantly insulted by his female boss and dreamed of trampling her underfoot.
"Damn it, that vixen, all she does is seduce the section chief!" The bald, Mediterranean-looking man slammed his fist on the table and shouted angrily.
"Whoosh, that's what it's like to be pretty~" Brooke whistled. If he could make money just by posing, he would have done it long ago if he were a woman.
Time flew by quickly, and night fell.
The bar quickly became lively, with colorful lights shining on the faces of everyone on the dance floor as they gazed at each other, seemingly lost in their own world until they were completely drunk.
"Hiccup~"
At this moment, He Ye also woke up.
He didn't know what time it was, and he had a bit of a headache. Most importantly, he was very hungry, but he didn't want to eat those two hot dog buns. This was his last thought, an inexplicable thought.
"What time is it now?" He Ye looked up.
The bartender at the bar hadn't changed yet. Brooke saw He Ye wake up, checked the time, and replied, "10:32 PM."
"I slept for quite a while," He Ye joked to himself.
The bar was incredibly noisy, and He Ye rubbed his temples, having calmed down considerably. He admitted that when he walked out of the bakery, he felt like the sky had fallen—damn it, how could he get married like this?
Whether it was the alcohol numbing her or the post-drunken sage-like state of mind, He Ye was no longer so depressed.
Actually, I don't really like Elsa that much; it's just that she appeared at the right time, right? If it were a flat-chested loli, I might... never mind.
A curvy figure is his absolute ideal.
In short, my new life must go on.
"Phew—" Thinking of this, He Ye exhaled a breath of stale air, "Check, please."
Brooke came over when he heard the noise and posted the bill: "Five draft beers and two large bird mojitos, totaling 156 yuan."
"Are you robbing me?" He Ye cursed.
"That's the price, bro." Brooke shrugged innocently.
Forget it...
He Ye's decision to leave with nothing wasn't entirely without any assets; he still carried 20,000 yuan in cash. Although this was no different from leaving with nothing compared to his previous assets, he could still afford this small amount.
"I will never come to this lousy bar again," He Ye said with a look of disgust as he took out his money.
Brooke became interested and struck up a conversation:
"Really? Bro, if you come again tomorrow, you'll have perfect attendance. I've seen you six times this week. You're really not coming tomorrow?"
"I'm going to embrace a new life," He Ye scoffed.
"So the divorce went through?" Brooke asked with interest. "Then why did you collapse at the bar?"
Hearing this, a bitter feeling welled up in her previously calm heart again. He Ye bit her lip and spoke slowly and deliberately:
"Fuck it—"
"Uh, I wasn't insulting you." He Ye rubbed his head.
“I understand.” Brooke raised an eyebrow.
Perhaps the story was too bitter, or perhaps it would be much easier to say it in this situation. He Ye had already decided to say goodbye to the past, so she spoke softly:
"I got a divorce and was free. Just as I was about to pursue that curvaceous beauty, she was getting married again."
"Tell me, isn't this fucking messed up?" he sighed.
"Uh...are you getting ready to get married?" Brooke raised an eyebrow. "Or are you already married?"
"Yes, I'm getting married, so I plan to leave this heartbreaking city and go somewhere where no one knows me, to live a quiet life. That's why I won't come back."
He Ye rubbed the black hair that fell over his eyes, looking dejected.
Brooke looked at his old friend whom he had known for six days, and couldn't help but sigh as he listened to his sincere words.
"Why did you give up so easily?"
He Ye looked up in confusion: "?"
"That girl is just getting married, isn't she? Bro, you're so handsome, how can you not win over a woman? She's not a married woman who's been married for years."
Brooke said casually, adjusting his collar: "Men are most attractive when they're driven by love."
"...Fuck..."
He Ye opened his mouth in surprise, as if he had suddenly understood something, and his head buzzed for a moment.
Yeah, it's not like we're already married, why can't I be one?
"Just punch that guy and tell me he's the perfect man for her! If you disagree, come and fight! Let's have a blood-pumping battle!"
Brooke, seemingly caught up in the moment, spoke with great enthusiasm, even striking a boxer's stance and raising his arm. But He Ye, sitting opposite him, calmed down after a brief moment of excitement. Damn it, how could a modern person do such a despicable thing?
Isn't this stealing someone else's love?
He Ye, at least, has normal values. She quickly realized that this was just pure fantasy and that she should also consider things from the other person's perspective. Beating up someone's lover for no reason is not something a primary school student would do to attract attention.
However, such a thought is indeed exhilarating.
"Forget it." He Ye waved his hand.
Brooke quickly stopped performing: "Bro, have you thought this through?"
"Don't be an idiot." He Ye said succinctly.
Bartender Brooke didn't say anything more, hiding his smile as he wiped the strainer, watching with a 'you'll regret this, buddy' look on his face.
He Ye felt annoyed by this. He hadn't died because of a woman. He just happened to admire that gentle shadow, but it wasn't like he couldn't live without her.
The world is so big, there must be more than one pretty girl that He Ye likes. He can find a new bakery beauty in the future, as long as she has a good figure.
He Ye took out the invitation and looked at it, intending to throw it away later. This piece of junk looked terrible, as if it was mocking him for wearing a clown's red nose.
As for the two hot dog buns, He Ye, who was originally feeling resentful, now only had the idea of using them to fill his stomach.
Just then, someone walked over, like a lapdog wagging its tail at the smell of bread.
"Sir, sir..."
A girl wearing a tattered hoodie clung pitifully to He Ye's clothes, her face filthy and ugly beyond recognition.
Heye: "?"
He looked at Brooke, the bartender across from him, and pointed at her, asking, "Who's this?"
Bartender Brooke scratched his head: "You know, there are always some weird people in bars, that's normal."
"Are you sure you didn't let a homeless person in?"
"Sir... I'm so hungry. Just give me a little food, a piece of bread, and I'll stay with you for the whole night..."
The girl spoke pitifully, sounding weak and listless, tugging at his sleeve. He Ye's expression subtly changed when he heard the latter part of her words.
This is fucking wrong.
Could this be a honey trap set in collaboration with this bar?
After a long silence, He Ye looked at the girl who was still standing beside him, and suddenly reached out and pulled off the cloth hat she was wearing. Soon the girl trembled, which didn't seem to be an act. She quickly put the hoodie back on, like a rat that couldn't stand the light.
She was indeed ugly—the girl's features were so filthy that you couldn't even see her face, and her black hair was tangled and infested with fleas. It was unlikely that this was a honey trap.
"Here's some food, just come with me, okay? Ugh, what a nuisance."
With a compassionate look, He Ye took out a hot dog bun and handed it to her, which the girl hurriedly accepted with both hands.
"Eat up, eat up!" she exclaimed, her eyes shining as she held the bread.
He Ye was eating another hot dog bun, after all, he hadn't eaten all day, but when he saw the down-and-out homeless man next to him wolfing down his food, he paused and his mouth drooped.
"Damn it, I lost my appetite with you next to me. Here, take this piece. You're such a nuisance."
He Ye feigned impatience and tossed her the half-eaten hot dog bun. The down-on-his-luck homeless man didn't seem to mind and wolfed it down again, making He Ye's eyelids twitch...
"Eat to your heart's content! Eat to your heart's content!"
Damn, he really can't stand this.
"Hey, do you have any food here?"
He Ye turned to look at the bartender.
Brooke thought for a moment and said, "Yes, fried rice and noodles."
"Then bring two plates of fried rice. This guy ate the dinner I was saving for myself," He Ye said impatiently.
Soon, two plates of fried rice were served. He Ye finished one plate first, while the dirty-looking girl stood beside him, watching longingly.
"Sigh, I can't eat the second plate." He Ye patted his stomach; he had already taken two bites of the second plate of fried rice.
"Then, then this plate of fried rice..."
"Can I get a refund?" He Ye asked the bartender.
“It’s too late to turn it back now that I’ve already eaten it.” Brooke shrugged and shook the flask.
"Great!"
Soon, the sound of ravenous eating came from the side again.
Seeing this, He Ye quietly tidied her trench coat. While she was showing off her food, she pushed open the door and left the Big Bird Turnaround Bar. Inside, the bright lights and intoxicating atmosphere were captivating, while outside, the cold wind was howling and the streetlights were dim.
It's already early March, my seventh year living abroad. The evening breeze is blowing through the fields, and my thoughts are stirred.
He flipped through the invitation card in his hand, then looked around at his surroundings—well, there wasn't even a trash can.
I had no choice but to put it in my pocket and go back to the hotel first.
He hadn't walked more than 200 meters when he suddenly heard a noise behind him—someone was following him.
Having received some training, He Ye turned the corner and hid in the shadows, wondering whether the guy had stumbled upon her by chance or had come with a purpose, and quietly observed for a while.
Unexpectedly, they were actually found.
“Sir, my nose is very sensitive, I can smell your scent… I told you before, if you give me bread, I'll follow you for the night…”
She stood in front, her hands clenched, her clothes tattered. Under the orange streetlights, she looked every bit like a wicked homeless woman robbing herself.
Ke Heye was simply conflicted. He put his hands in his pockets and put on a fierce expression to scare them away:
"Hey kid, do you even know I just broke up with my boyfriend? If you come with me all night, your legs will be shaking tomorrow!"
"It's okay!" she patted her chest. "I'm tough!"
If you're not a good friend, can you please stop doing this...?
He Ye surrendered. Damn it, isn't this world getting worse and worse?
Seeing He Ye's tense expression, her expression like a riverbank bursting, almost as if she was about to stick her fingers into her hair and yell "fuck!", she realized that all the gentlemanly guys she had previously managed to win over were like this!
The girl quickly breathed a sigh of relief, knowing she had chosen the right target!
She continued, patting her chest earnestly, and said:
"I just want a place to sleep, even if it's just for one night. I knew you were a good person, and you'll definitely meet someone more suitable in the future... Let go of the heartbreak!"
"Shut the hell up..." He Ye turned away listlessly.
"Sir, sir..."
The girl quickly followed.
