Chapter 71 Are all Federation pilots monsters?
The players, engaged in battle with the gene-stealers, suddenly felt a tremor emanating from the depths of the earth. The tremor wasn't the usual roar of artillery fire, but a deep, resonant hum, like the groaning of a planet's core. Immediately afterward, a deafening boom echoed from the ground, the sound rapidly expanding as it approached, ultimately transforming into a blazing white beam of light shooting straight into the sky!
The night was utterly ripped apart in that instant. The once pitch-black sky was dyed a blinding pure white by the burst of light, as if day had instantly arrived. At the center of the pillar of light, an orange-red mushroom cloud expanded and rose at an alarming speed, enveloping everything in its shadow. Then, an invisible, immense force swept in with overwhelming force.
A fierce wind, carrying the scorching smell of gunpowder, roared across the battlefield like an enraged beast, tossing players about and throwing them to the side. All that could be heard was the howling wind and the shrill whistling of metal fragments. Debris and dust were swirled into the sky, forming a circular shockwave that spread in all directions.
As the light faded and the gale subsided, the players struggled to their feet, only to find, to their astonishment, that the once orderly, well-balanced, and flawless cunning strategists were now in unprecedented chaos. Sharp, piercing screams rose and fell, filled with inhuman fear and pain.
Some of them, their eyes bloodshot and seemingly driven mad, began to attack any living creature around them, friend or foe alike. Claws tore and fangs snapped, creating a horrifying scene of infighting. Others dropped their weapons, screaming in terror, writhing as they fled for their lives, completely disregarding the battle lines and orders. The cunning thieves' position instantly descended into chaos, as if stirred into a boiling pot of porridge by an invisible hand.
"Looks like they succeeded!" A player stood up from behind cover. If he had done this before, he would have been riddled with bullets, but he was unharmed this time.
"These cunning bastards have gone mad!" Another player poked his head out, his eyes filled with excitement.
"I heard that when the Tyranid node creatures are decapitated, they look like this?"
"They share the same origin and species."
The two were still chatting when their teammates, who were already charging forward, shouted, "Stop chatting and come and beat this dog when it's down!"
Meanwhile, the resurrected [Jogris Top Lane] rubbed his stomach dejectedly, his face filled with disappointment: "My tactical nuke is gone..."
"It was somewhat expected," a player who respawned with him patted him on the shoulder and comforted him. "After all, this thing is a consumable, not a permanent buff like [changing the upper limit of physical strength]. Once it's gone, it's gone forever."
“Yeah, right.” The top laner shrugged and said thoughtfully, “Then I’ll probably have to think twice about stuffing tactical nuclear bombs into my body in the future. I’ll have to find a place to blow them up before I die… otherwise it’ll be a waste.”
As for accidentally detonating it on one's own position... few people believe such a thing could happen "accidentally." Detonating a tactical nuclear weapon is a highly precise process, requiring specific commands and operations. Even the slightest error will only detonate the external conventional explosives, with a power roughly equivalent to a hand grenade. In other words, without deliberate manipulation, it's impossible to detonate a tactical nuclear weapon concealed within a person's body.
"What should we do next?" one player asked.
The top laner thought for a moment, a hint of eagerness flashing in his eyes: "Playing with these gravity parachutes is quite addictive. It just so happens that Chicken is now out of organization, so let's use them as targets and try some real combat training?"
"I think this is a great idea!"
...In one area of Zhongchao, a dozen players were engaged in a fierce battle with dozens of thieves. The scene was quite... well, very beginner-friendly.
Aside from one clearly a veteran player who went to his death, the other players' tactics were a complete mess. Some charged recklessly, others hesitated, and their firing accuracy was abysmal. Laser beams and live ammunition flew erratically through the air, leaving scorch marks and craters on the walls. If it weren't for the friend-or-foe identification system, they would probably be more likely to accidentally hit friendly fire in this chaotic battlefield than to hit a cunning enemy.
The veteran, with his skillful tactical maneuvers, weaved among the enemy, firing with precision, each shot taking the life of a cunning thief.
Fortunately, the enemies they faced were no longer the cunning psionicists of the past. Having lost their chieftain's psionic control, these cunning individuals had also suffered a sharp decline in skill, tactics, and fighting spirit. They became sluggish, their attacks chaotic, and they even hesitated to advance out of fear.
Just when both sides thought this stalemate would last for another ten minutes or so, a distinctive roar, accompanied by a jet of flame, grew louder and louder—the signature sound of a gravitational parachute jet engine. The cunning thieves on land were completely unprepared for an attack from the sky. They looked up in terror, only to see figures descending from the heavens, accompanied by blinding laser beams. Nearly half of their enemies were killed by the descending lasers, lying mangled and bloodied on the ground.
"Are all the Federation's pilots monsters?" a player on land quipped.
"Hey, mentoring a newbie?" A paratrooper performed a graceful somersault in the air and landed steadily next to the veteran. His laser gun was still emitting smoke, and he had a relaxed smile on his face.
“Yes,” the veteran greeted him in return, wiping the sweat from his brow. “You guys are getting more and more skilled at using gravity parachutes lately.”
"If you flew for over twenty hours a day like us, you'd be proficient too." The paratrooper laughed heartily, soaring into the sky, his body making a graceful turn in mid-air, before gliding towards another group of sneaky soldiers. "Getting more and more excited as you fly!"
"I don't enjoy flying as much as you guys. If I were to fly for more than ten hours, I'd probably get tired of it," the veteran shook his head.
"Alright, I won't bother you anymore while you're training the new recruits," the paratrooper said, then spun around and flew off to other places. "I'm going to check out other places. See you next time!"
"See you again someday!" the veteran shouted back, watching the other's figure disappear rapidly into the distance.
With half their firepower gone, the remaining cunning thieves were quickly wiped out by the players. After the battle, a new player curiously asked the veteran, "Hey bro, do you know him?"
"Yes," the veteran nodded matter-of-factly, a hint of reminiscence on his face. "There were only about a hundred people who went to their deaths during the second test. We saw each other all the time, and even if we weren't close, we became brothers after a few battles."
He sighed with emotion: "But now the number of people is increasing, it seems to be close to three hundred, and it's rare to see any familiar faces in the original company anymore."
