Chapter 243 A Political Commissar's Day
Chapter 243 A Day in the Life of a Political Commissar (Part Two)
Before Regan Montoya could even sort out the mess before him, the situation took another turn beyond his expectations.
After being exposed by the deputy commander, the regimental commander who called himself "Daniel Wu" visibly became anxious. He pointed at the other man's nose and cursed, "Damn it, do you have to expose me in front of outsiders?"
Just then, he seemed to suddenly remember something, his eyes widened, and he revealed an "I see" expression: "I get it! No wonder you've been getting up earlier than me these past few days. You treacherous villain, are you trying to seize my position as regimental commander! Watch me chop you to death!"
Having said that, the regimental commander actually drew a tactical combat knife from his waist and roared as he slashed at the deputy commander. The blade was sharp and swift, creating a whooshing sound; it was clearly not a fake!
The vice-commander, nicknamed "Rukawa Kaede," sneered and unhesitatingly drew his entrenching tool from behind his back: "Well done! Your father has been wanting to teach you a lesson, you unfilial son!"
"Qiang!"
The blade and shovel clashed, sending sparks flying.
Then, Regan stared in disbelief as the highest-ranking commander of the unit and his deputy actually started fighting right at the camp gate, in front of the new political commissar and a large group of subordinates! And, based on the rigorous training he had received at the political commissar academy, Regan could tell with absolute certainty that the two were not putting on an act; every attack they launched was aimed at the other's vitals, and they were genuinely trying to kill each other!
What an outrageous scene!
Could it be that the regimental commander and deputy commander harbor a deep-seated, irreconcilable hatred for each other due to past reasons? Regan couldn't help but wonder. If so, the subsequent political work would likely be fraught with problems…
What horrified him even more was that the other members of the group who had come to their deaths showed no intention of pulling their leader and deputy leader apart; they all stayed put and watched the spectacle. In fact, more and more people gathered, and some even took out snacks that looked like sunflower seeds from their pockets, cracking them open while pointing and commenting on the fight.
This is because... these two guys were already unpopular in this group, and everyone wanted them dead?
Regan's mind raced. If that were the case, then stepping forward and risking injury to stop these two might not only fail to earn him any gratitude, but would also incur the resentment of everyone present!
Just as Regan was struggling with his internal conflict, the two players had been battling it out for over a minute before suddenly separating on their own.
The regimental commander, leaning on his knife and panting, pointed at the other man and said, "This time... this time, I'll let you go because it's bad luck that someone died so soon after Political Commissar Regan arrived! Next time, I won't show any mercy!"
The deputy regimental commander, not to be outdone, slammed his entrenching tool on the ground: "Hmph, with your pathetic skills, who knows who will die next time!"
Seeing that the two might start arguing again and possibly get into another fight, Regan quickly seized the opportunity to intervene. He had already learned their real names from the information revealed during their earlier fight and verbal exchange.
"Commander Tang Ren, and Deputy Commander Cai Ji!" Reagan said, trying to sound authoritative. "Work is of utmost importance; let's hurry to the command post!"
These words seemed to remind Commander Tang Ren of something. He suddenly reached out to Deputy Commander Cai Ji: "By the way, my radiation debuff is almost full. I'm going to die in about ten minutes. Can you give me some more radiation debuff?"
Cai Ji cursed and pulled a small medicine bottle from his pocket, slapping it onto Tang Ren's hand: "Then why don't you just hurry up and die!"
Without any hesitation, Tang Ren twisted open the small medicine bottle, shook out half of the pills, and popped them into his mouth like candy, chewing them with gusto. Then, he turned around and handed the remaining half-bottle to Ruigen.
Now, even Regan was completely confused about whether the two had a good or bad relationship.
If they were close, they really fought to the death; but if they were bad, one dared to give the life-saving medicine, and the other was equally willing to take it. Their relationship seemed to transcend Regan's understanding of all known interpersonal relationships in human society.
Regan hesitated for a moment, then took the small bottle of medicine: "Do I need to take it too?"
“You’re not a player, so you especially need to eat, otherwise what if you die from radiation?” Tang Ren said matter-of-factly. “We’re in the rear, and the closer we are to the city of Plantim, the heavier the radiation.”
"I'm not a Peditian, so I have to eat this?" Regan pondered. "What does this mean? Are Peditians particularly resistant to radiation? But didn't he just say he was about to die from radiation..."
This logical contradiction made him frown.
However, he understood the second half of what was said. He activated the device on his wrist and quickly scanned the pills for toxicity. After confirming that they were just high-intensity anti-radiation compounds and not toxic, he poured out two of the so-called "Radiation Relief Pills" and carefully swallowed them.
As for Tang Ren's bold and unrestrained manner of swallowing half of it in one gulp, he dared not imitate him. He felt that his worldview had been repeatedly challenged from the first minute he stepped into this camp, and was on the verge of shattering. Following Tang Ren and Stu Pete, Regan Montoya entered the command post of the camp for the dead—a prefabricated building.
Upon entering, a strange odor, a mixture of engine oil, sweat, and some kind of instant nutritional paste, hit him. The command post wasn't what Regan had imagined—no communications soldiers running around relaying orders, no staff officers hunched over their desks. It was a mess; several open ammunition boxes were piled in the corner, but instead of ammunition, they were filled with colorful snack wrappers. On a cot, a soldier even lay, helmet on, snoring evenly.
The tactical table, which should have been the core of the entire command center, was in a terrible state.
The huge metal tabletop, which should have been covered with a holographic star map, was covered with a thick layer of dust, clearly indicating that it hadn't been used in a long time. Various papers, data boards, and even a few empty wine bottles were haphazardly piled on it.
Regan's brow furrowed deeply. This wasn't just a matter of lax discipline; this was practically a den of bandits!
"Come, come, Political Commissar, over here." Tang Ren didn't seem to care at all. He strode over to the tactical table and, as if rummaging through a garbage dump, casually brushed aside the scraps of paper and pulled out a parchment list from the bottom. He blew off the dust and handed it to Reagan.
"Political Commissar, look, this is our regiment's next task. You should quickly issue the orders from above."
Regan took the list with a lot of doubts. But when his eyes fell on the paper, he couldn't help but be stunned.
In stark contrast to the chaotic environment, the list was meticulously detailed. From troop assembly time, attack routes, and fire preparations to logistical supply estimates and wounded evacuation plans, everything a combat regiment should be responsible for was planned in an orderly and logically sound manner, which could even be described as excellent.
He looked up at Tang Ren with some confusion: "Since you've already planned what you should do, why don't you do it?"
"Hey, aren't we waiting for you?" Tang Ren suddenly straightened his back, his face showing an expectant and solemn expression. He even gave Regan a not-so-standard military salute, and his tone suddenly rose.
"Political Commissar! Give the order!"
His voice was loud and passionate, as if every word Regan was about to utter would be a divine decree.
But this sudden enthusiasm did not invigorate Regan; instead, it set off alarm bells in his mind. This was all too abnormal. A unit so lax in discipline that the commander and deputy commander were seen fighting in public could produce a perfect battle plan; a commander who showed no regard for command post could display such exaggerated formality in issuing orders.
There must be something fishy about this.
Regan did not respond to Tang Ren's sudden surge of enthusiasm. He simply put the list back on the table, scrutinized the other man with a suspicious look, and slowly said, "I am new here and do not yet understand the situation of the troops and the battlefield environment. I would like to inspect the regimental camp first... This kind of thing should be left to Regimental Commander Tang Ren, who is more familiar with this place."
He decided to retreat in order to advance. He would not issue any orders until he had a clear understanding of the strength of this unit.
Upon hearing Regan's words, the exaggerated enthusiasm on Tang Ren's face instantly vanished, replaced by an obvious sense of disappointment, as if his expectations had been dashed. He pursed his lips and waved his hand casually.
"Alright, hurry up then, we're all waiting for you to give us the mission."
After saying that, he turned around and walked to the side, and began to whisper with the deputy leader Cai Ji about things like "This NPC is so cautious" and "Is his favorability not high enough?"
Regan stood still, taking in all their words. Although he didn't understand some of the words, he clearly heard the word "mission".
The word "mission" coming from the commander's mouth seemed to refer to something...something specific that he needed to "issue".
Regan Montoya took a deep breath, feeling as if he had stepped into a vast mystery rather than a military camp. He decided that he had to investigate this unit called "The Dead Men Tellers" thoroughly, immediately.
