Chapter 207 Only We Are Here: The Death-Seekers
The fortress where the regimental command was located was a magnificent fortress worthy of being included in the "Exemplary Imperial Defenses". The walls, made of a mixture of plastic steel and concrete, were tens of meters thick, and the muzzles of countless heavy cannons protruded from their firing ports, forming a steel jungle.
At this moment, this impregnable fortress is roaring.
Almost all the firepower was poured onto the slowly approaching behemoth—the Norn Messenger—but it had no effect whatsoever.
The flames of the explosion futilely bloomed on the creature's smooth carapace; the energy beams merely stirred up invisible ripples before being deflected, and the projectiles were repelled by the carapace upon contact. The Norn messenger didn't even slow its pace, as if it were merely experiencing a trivial summer shower.
Suddenly, the Norn messenger stopped. The enormous, hideous proliferating brain tissue behind it began to shimmer with an ominous, eerie blue light.
A bolt of psionic lightning, as thick as a bucket, carrying destructive energy, shot out fiercely from that brain tissue!
"boom--!!!"
The psionic lightning struck the fortress precisely on the front. There was no violent explosion, only a sickeningly melting sound. The seemingly indestructible composite walls melted and evaporated like butter being sliced by a hot knife before that pure psionic energy. With a single strike, a third of the fortress collapsed, revealing the twisted steel bars and burning structure inside.
Norn's messengers immediately charged toward the massive breach.
"Go! Block that gap!" With a roaring command, several Leman Rustanks emerged from a hidden door on the side of the fortress, attempting to fill the gap in the defense with their steel bodies. They fired almost against the Norn messengers' bodies, the roar of their main guns deafening, and the smoke and fire from the close-range explosions instantly engulfed the area.
However, when the smoke cleared, several Leman Rustanks were found, some crushed into pancakes by a giant foot, others torn to flaming parts by sharp limbs. The Norn messenger, however, emerged unharmed from the epicenter of the explosion.
"Is this thing even human-made?" A Lemanrus crew member, covered in blood, crawled out of the twisted turret wreckage. Before he could even react to the scene before him, he was overwhelmed by the Tyranid swarm that followed the Norn messengers. Before being trampled into mincemeat, he uttered this final thought.
The Norn Messenger continued its advance, its objective clear and unwavering. Along the way, the "Deathbringers" tried every means to hinder it: volleys of laser guns, automatic cannons, and heavy explosive rounds were like tickles; even the powerful thermobaric and plasma weapons couldn't reach effective range against the swarm. The lower-level Tyrannos who followed the Norn Messenger formed an insurmountable barrier with their flesh and blood.
“I feel like we’re an army in some kind of monster disaster movie,” a player hiding behind cover, watching the Norn Messenger advance unstoppably, couldn’t help but complain. “We’re the kind of cannon fodder specifically used to cushion the monsters’ fall, using our incompetence to demonstrate how powerful Ultraman or giant robots are in the end.”
Upon hearing this, another man beside him, who was also facing death, gave a bitter laugh and pulled the bolt of the grenade launcher in his hand.
“But unfortunately, there’s no Ultraman here, and the Titan Legion has gone to protect Macragge,” his voice was unusually clear amidst the continuous explosions, “Only we are here: the Deathbringers.” As an extension of the Hive Will on the battlefield, the Norn Messenger itself had no independent thought; it was merely a perfect biological weapon, faithfully executing the commands from a higher being. However, at this moment, the Hive Will, perceiving through this body, sensed a hint of… doubt.
The psionic strike was precisely calculated, targeting the area beneath the fortress with the highest concentration of life signals. A single blow was enough to pulverize most of the organisms within. Meanwhile, the accompanying swarm of insects had completely engulfed the breached defenses, wiping out all resistance within the upper structure.
Logically, only a few hundred scattered remnants, at most a thousand, should remain surviving within the fortress. But for some reason, it can still clearly sense thousands of life signals, just as it did before unleashing that devastating psionic attack, without the slightest decrease.
what happened?
Yes, the swarm had indeed breached the fortress's interior passageways. However, the humans' will to resist had not weakened as expected. On the contrary, in the narrow underground tunnels, their resistance became more intense than ever before.
With nowhere left to retreat, the dying turned every corridor and every corner into a battlefield, and the already compressed firepower became even more concentrated and deadly.
The roar of the heavy bomb guns was amplified to a deafening level in the enclosed space, and the intense heat was enough to instantly vaporize all enemies in the entire corridor. The Tyranid swarm's pride in its numbers became a burden here, making it difficult for them to move an inch.
The hive's will realized that as long as the organization existed, these humans would not give up the fight. It decided to stop wasting time cleaning up these insignificant "cells" and instead destroy the "brain" that was still putting up a last-ditch effort.
A new command surged through the Norn messenger's nervous system like an electric current. The behemoth instantly ignored everything around it—the automated turrets firing futilely at it, the suicide bombers battling the swarm in the tunnels. Its massive body transformed into a battering ram, smashing straight through several inner walls.
"Boom!"
With a deafening roar that shook the earth, the Norn messenger arrived directly above the regimental command post. It let out a piercing shriek, and its massive, scythe-like forelimbs slammed into the thick reinforced concrete ceiling. With a teeth-grinding tearing sound, it actually ripped the entire ceiling of the command post off!
Dust and debris fell, revealing the command center below, its red alarm lights flashing.
Then, the Norn Messenger’s enormous compound eye, composed of countless tiny lenses, saw the target it was looking for.
The commander stood before the holographic sand table, neither hiding nor picking up a weapon. Amidst the piercing alarm and the deafening crashes, he calmly raised his head and met the inhuman compound eyes with equanimity.
The next instant, the trump card—the tactical nuclear bomb—prepared for this moment and buried beneath the foundation of the command post, was immediately detonated.
And the Norn messenger is right at the epicenter of this artificial sun's rise!
