Chapter 197 What kind of special effects are these in the sky?
Under the sergeant's influence, and with the mentality that "it's worth having a taste before I die," the newbies all pried a small piece of meat from the army green can and put it in their mouths.
Then, the entire trench fell silent.
The next second, everyone was shocked.
"Holy crap! This tastes divine!"
"It's so delicious! It's the best meat I've ever eaten on Earth!"
This was the first time they had tasted such exquisite flavor in this game. Before this, hunger was either relieved by dying and resetting their status, or by nibbling on tasteless nutrition bars. This explosion of happiness on their taste buds far surpassed most of the delicious food they had ever eaten on Earth.
The fastest newbie finished eating first, letting out a satisfied sigh. He leaned against the earthen wall of the trench, looked up at the sky, and tried to savor the aftertaste. This unconscious action led him to see something: "Hey, what kind of special effects are those in the sky?"
Upon hearing this, the others who were licking the cans instinctively looked up. They saw countless tiny black specks falling from the clouds in the gray sky, like a dense rain of spores, showering down on the entire planet's surface.
The squad leader was the first to react, shouting sternly, "Special effects my ass, Tyron is here!"
Chaos erupted in the trenches. However, under the squad leader's command, the chaos was quickly quelled. Everyone took their positions, gripping their newly acquired plasma weapons tightly, and stared ahead. A newbie couldn't help but ask, "What's going on? We didn't receive any notification that the enemy was coming!"
The squad leader said irritably, "What? Do the insects have to send a diplomat to inform us before they come to eat us? I didn't know the Tyranids followed any social norms?"
The newbie realized he had asked a stupid question, smiled awkwardly, immediately shut his mouth, and focused intently on observing what lay ahead.
Just then, a series of muffled shelling shots came from behind. Whistling shells flew overhead and landed precisely in the open ground not far in front of the squad. Strangely, however, the shells didn't explode; they simply remained embedded in the soil.
While the newbies were still wondering what was going on, the squad leader had already issued a new order: "Everyone! Immediately check the airtightness of your equipment! Now, inject your combat medication! They're firing poison gas from the rear!"
The newbies immediately did as instructed. Sure enough, as soon as the squad leader finished speaking, the shells that had fallen to the ground began to hiss and emit dark green gas. This gas ignited the moment it came into contact with the outside air, expanding wildly at an explosive speed. In just over ten seconds, everyone's vision was completely covered by the billowing, highly toxic fog.
The ground began to tremble slightly and rhythmically, and the Tyranids' signature, chilling shriek echoed from afar, growing louder as it approached. Soon, numerous white outlines depicting the Tyranids appeared in the players' tactical visors.
The squad leader immediately shouted, "Don't rush to fire! We're using plasma now! Wait for my order before firing!" The players then forcibly suppressed their instinctive urge to immediately pull the trigger, watching helplessly as the white borders representing the enemies in their field of vision grew larger and closer.
The squad leader calmly identified the types of Tyranids charging towards them: "Most of them are blade bugs and gun bugs, a few warrior bugs are scattered around, and we can't even see a shadow of other high-level units... Tsk, I was hoping to at least give the executioner a hard blow."
When the ferocious figures of the Tyranid swarm burst out of the poisonous fog and came within 500 meters of them, the squad leader finally gave the order: "Fire!"
A dozen blazing plasma balls shot out instantly, tracing dazzling blue trails in the dim, poisonous mist, like a dozen miniature suns. They plunged headlong into the dense Tyrannosaurus's charging formation. The insects hit, along with a large swarm of their kind around them, were instantly melted and vaporized. The impenetrable swarm of insects was forcibly cleared out by this first volley, creating a shockingly large blank area.
The Tyranids clearly hadn't expected such terrifying firepower from that unassuming little trench. But having charged this far, retreating would only cause greater losses. So, instead of retreating, the swarm emitted even sharper hissing and began to accelerate wildly.
Dazzling plasma balls kept flying out of the trenches, turning any insects that dared to approach into steam. A few newbies, blinded by rage, even let out frenzied shouts: "Hahahaha! Come on! Insects! Hahahahahahaha—!"
The Mechanic from Riza, however, didn't join the revelry. He was holding an old, hardcover notebook, scribbling furiously with a metal pen. Unlike the other newbies who focused entirely on the front, the class monitor noticed this and asked, somewhat puzzled, "You, a seasoned mechanic, are using pen and paper to take notes?"
Without looking up, the other person casually replied, "My memory core is enough to remember everything, but I'm used to the feeling of pen nib gliding across paper; it inspires me."
The squad leader shrugged and ignored him. Just as he was about to fire again with the plasma gun, which had cooled down a bit, a stream of green acid rained down from above. Had he not reacted quickly and dodged to the side, the acid would have hit him squarely on the head. Even so, his entire right arm was quickly dissolved by the strong acid, turning into a puff of blue smoke.
Thanks to the combat serum, I couldn't feel any pain. The squad leader shouted, "From the sky!"
However, the squad leader said they were in the sky, and the newbies didn't understand what to do. Asking them to use plasma guns with slow rates of fire that required prediction to shoot at those high-speed, randomly flying gargoyles in the sky was asking too much of them.
Ultimately, the suicide squad built their defensive lines outward from the major cities of Plantim, with the outermost perimeter naturally receiving less firepower. For these rudimentary outermost trenches, the only anti-air capability was to fire laser guns randomly into the sky in a gamble.
It's essentially a fishing game: Tyrannosaurus Rex is the fish, and the suicide bombers in the trenches are the bait. The goal is to lure Tyrannosaurus Rex to attack these positions containing biomass, and then detonate the thermobaric bombs buried underground for a big attack.
The squad leader reacted quickly and immediately gave specific orders: "[Bear Big], [Bear Two]! Come and cover me, don't let me die! The rest of you, ignore those gargoyles in the sky, let them vomit! Focus on attacking Tyrannosaurus in front!"
Thus, a bizarre scene unfolded on the battlefield. Gargoyles spewed deadly acid from the sky, melting and killing players in the trenches, only to reappear unharmed from the poisonous fog, picking up their previous weapons or taking a new plasma gun from the Mechanic player, and continuing the battle.
