Mystery: The Last Shepherd
Chapter 279 The Key to Playing the Shepherd
Chapter 279 The Key to Playing the Shepherd
“Sir, I did work as a shepherd before, on a ranch in East Chestershire.”
The older man, Nick, answered humbly.
He didn't seem happy at all when the past was mentioned.
How big is your flock of sheep?
More than 50 heads
What do you mainly do when you're herding livestock?
"."
Nick dared not answer, only looking at Luzer with confusion and fear. He didn't know what this well-dressed gentleman wanted, asking him, a lowly person, about his daily work. He was worried that if he said the wrong thing, he would displease the other man.
"Answer me! Are you deaf?"
Charles, standing to the side, said unhappily, his words successfully making the other party even more frightened.
Lu Ze glanced at him calmly, and he immediately shut his mouth, lowered his head, and left the office.
“Alright, don’t worry, I didn’t mean any harm by talking to you. I’m just curious about the livestock industry,” Lu Ze said to Nick, using a little bit of “psychological suggestion” in his voice to quickly calm him down.
The name of the potion was key to its digestion, so he simply sought out someone with shepherding experience to ask for their insights.
After being reassured, Nick, feeling much more relaxed, began to recount his specific tasks, as Luzer had requested—letting the sheep out in the morning, guiding them to fresh pastures, and following and protecting them along the way. Then, at dusk, he would bring the sheep back before dark to watch over them, repeating this cycle endlessly.
In addition, attention should be paid to the growth of grass, climate and season, wild animal attacks, etc.
As Lu Ze listened, he extracted key information from it.
Owning herds, feeding them, protecting them, and guiding them.
he mused.
If we apply these principles to role-playing, we should first establish a sufficient flock of sheep—that is, believers—and then gradually expand this flock through continuous "herding."
Thank you for your help.
Luzer told Nick that he felt he had gained some insight. As a thank you, he took out two soules and handed them to him.
"Thank you, kind sir!"
Nick accepted the banknotes with great gratitude, his expression one of excitement.
"correct."
Before he left, Luzer asked with a hint of curiosity, "Since you were a shepherd before, why did you leave East Chestershire and come to Backlund to make a living?"
With the Industrial Revolution led by Russell, various industries developed rapidly, including the textile industry, which required wool. Logically, his job should have improved accordingly, so why did he go to Backlund?
Upon hearing this, Nick hesitated for a moment, then said with a wry smile, "I used to look after a ranch for a viscount. A few years ago, the number of textile mills in Backlund increased, and the viscount wanted to take advantage of the situation to make a fortune, so he insisted on increasing the number of sheep. As a result, the pastures were overgrazed and abandoned."
"Of course, the Viscount didn't think he was wrong. He believed that it was all my fault as a servant for not taking good care of the sheep. So, the lord had his men beat me up and kicked me out of the ranch. I used my savings to treat my injuries and wandered all the way to Backlund, where I lived a life of barely making ends meet."
After he finished speaking, he bowed to the silent Lu Ze, put the banknotes into his pocket, and then tightly gripped the pocket with his hand through his clothes before leaving with his head down.

North Quarter, St. Samuel's Church.
A group of people wearing black trench coats and red gloves slowly walked into the underground area.
The man at the head of the group appeared to be in his forties, with soft facial features and slightly long hair at the temples. He wore a distinctive top hat and a black cane inlaid with gold, which looked somewhat ostentatious and didn't match his composed appearance.
"Finally home"
Behind the man, Leonard, standing in the crowd, let out a long sigh of relief. His words resonated with many of the team members. This was a "Red Glove" team specializing in handling dangerous situations, and they had just returned from a grueling field mission.
"Alright, mission accomplished, everyone can disperse and rest."
The man in the lead smiled and spoke to his teammates.
"Yes, Captain Soster!"
The red gloves saluted, and they left in twos and threes, some to rest, others to go out and have fun. Leonard declined his teammates' invitations, saying he was too tired, and then walked alone towards the locker room. His hands appeared casually in his pockets as he strolled along. In reality, he was clutching a peculiar badge in his hand inside his pocket.
"Old man, are you really going there?"
He lowered his voice, as if talking to himself, "That place is connected to your enemies, you know. Be careful he doesn't follow the clues and find us."
Immediately afterwards, Leonard tilted his head slightly, as if listening to something, but he didn't seem to agree much, and he pursed his lips.
"Tch, don't let yourself run away and leave me to get caught."
He lowered his voice as he turned a corner and unexpectedly saw a familiar and beautiful figure across the corridor. It was a young woman in a purple robe, with makeup that gave her a mysterious air.
"Ms. Daly?"
Leonard asked, both surprised and delighted, and immediately stuffed the badge deeper into his pocket, "What are you doing in Backlund?"
"Long time no see, Leonard."
Daly smiled at him. "I just went to see Old Neil and heard that your team just returned from a mission, so I came to see you. How are you?"
"Okay."
Leonard smiled wryly when he heard her ask that, and then said, "The red gloves are more arduous and dangerous than I imagined."
Even so, he had no intention of leaving.
Because he hasn't finished what he needs to do yet.
"is it?"
Dai Li's beautiful eyes flickered slightly as she smiled and said, "It's okay, I'll be joining you soon, and maybe I can help you with some of the work."
Leonard was taken aback.
Is she going to join the Red Gloves too?
"Ms. Daly, aren't you the captain in Enmat Port? If you come to Backlund, what will happen to them?"
he asked eagerly.
"Several months have passed, and the situation in Port-Enmat has basically stabilized."
Daly replied, her voice slightly low, "I've applied to the Sanctuary, and they will send an experienced Night Watch captain to replace me."
It's clear that she's very determined; she's already made all the necessary arrangements and is just waiting for her application to be approved.
"Yes, but."
Leonard's mind was a bit muddled. He opened his mouth, "This is too dangerous."
If the captain were still alive, he certainly wouldn't want Ms. Daly to make such a choice.
But Daly just looked at him calmly.
"Leonard, just like you, I also have my reasons for staying here."
"."
Leonard was speechless; he knew what the other person meant.
"Let's not talk about that, Leonard. You know, there's been a new incident in Backlund recently."
Seeing this, Daly smiled and changed the subject, "It seems to be a mysterious being called the Fool."
