Mystery: The Last Shepherd
Chapter 18 How dare you say that?
Chapter 18 How dare you say that?
Mystics, a profession of exceptional sensitivity, allow them to perceive hidden and terrifying entities more readily than ordinary extraordinary beings. They can utilize these hidden entities, but more often than not, they are driven mad by their influence.
The instant Luze saw the strange eyes behind Old Neil, he suddenly recalled what Dunn had once said. How true! If only Dunn had also told Luze that such dangerous things existed within the Night Watch headquarters.
An eerie aura emanating from those terrifying eyes surged into Lu Ze's mind. He quickly lowered his head, avoiding eye contact with those eyes, which calmed him down slightly. His nose was itchy, and when he wiped it, he found that blood was flowing out.
The illusory sound of ocean waves faintly echoed in his mind, and the suffocating sense of oppression diminished considerably.
"Lu Ze, you've finally arrived. What happened to you?"
Before Klein could finish his welcoming words, he noticed Luzer's unusual behavior.
"I am fine."
Lu Ze quickly wiped away the bloodstains, looked up and smiled at him, saying, "The room was a bit dark, and I wasn't used to it, so my eyes were blurry for a moment."
He didn't intend to expose himself, but instead pretended to be nonchalant.
"You must be Luze Rondor."
Old Neil chuckled from behind the table, "Dunne has already told me that you just need to come here on time from now on and study with Klein."
"Hello, Mr. Neil."
Luze stared at his face, maintaining a smile, trying to avoid looking at the enormous eyes floating behind him. They were terrifying and eerie eyes, without eyelashes, almost ethereal in their transparency, filled with coldness and indifference. They clung to Old Neil's back, drifting and swaying with his movements, almost like a new growth on his body.
what happened?
What the hell!
Intuition told Lu Ze that those enormous eyes were definitely not benevolent. On the contrary, they gave him the feeling of a real creator he had seen in a hallucination—evil and insane.
In other words, it is very likely related to an evil god.
Another evil god! Damn it, I shouldn't have joined the team. Captain, didn't you say the work was usually easy, not very dangerous, and encountering an evil god was extremely rare? I don't believe you for a second!
Lu Ze's smile froze, and cold sweat began to break out on his back.
Klein, sitting next to him, remained completely composed, as if he couldn't see those eyes at all. For a moment, Lu Ze was truly envious of him.
"Hey young man, are you listening?"
What's worse, the old man even struck up a conversation with him, making it seem like he was going to come over.
“Of course I’m listening, Mr. Neil. It’s an honor to be a student in your occult course.”
Lu Ze slightly raised his hat as a sign of respect.
"Please sit down, just sit next to Klein."
Old Neil said, pointing to the chair opposite him.
Lu Ze had no choice but to sit down. At the same time, he was quickly thinking about how he should deal with the situation.
Shouting or running away on the spot is definitely the most foolish thing to do. Not to mention whether others will believe you, if you suddenly escalate the conflict and make them go berserk, you will be the one who suffers.
In that case, his best option is to pretend that nothing is wrong for the time being.
So Luze could only pretend to be normal and listen to Old Neil continue.
"Lu Ze, tell me your educational background."
“I never went to school, but I have no problem with basic reading and writing.”
“Oh right, Dunn told me that if that’s the case, you probably haven’t studied Hermes or Old Hermes, have you?” Luze shook his head.
Old Neil, observing Luze's reaction and confirming his guess, explained, "Simply put, both of these languages carry a mystical quality, allowing communication with the gods. There are other languages like Ancient Fusak and Ancient Elven, but Hermes is the most commonly used. To learn mystical arts, you must master this language, understand?"
Luze had only heard of these languages before, but he hadn't realized they had these uses. Ignoring the eyes behind Old Neil, he asked seriously, "So, how should I begin learning them?"
“Klein knows it all, let him teach you.”
Old Neil chuckled and passed the buck to his colleague, saying, "He's a top student in the history department at Hoy University; he's more than capable of teaching you."
"If you don't mind."
Klein didn't seem to care.
Over the next few minutes, Old Neil gave Luze a basic introduction to the mystical, outlining the areas he would be learning, including astrology, pendulums, herbs, ritual magic, and extraordinary creatures. His language was witty and humorous; if it weren't for the menacing eyes constantly emanating from behind him, it would have been a very lively and interesting introductory lesson in the mystical.
"By the way, there's something I need to remind you of."
Old Neil solemnly said, "Never pray to any mysterious being outside the Seven Gods, or you may suffer unimaginable consequences. Your path is prone to encountering hidden entities, so you must be extra careful! Be cautious and restrained!"
How dare you say that to me?
Lu Ze looked at the entity behind him and thought to himself, "This thing was clearly summoned by him."
Old Neil also taught Luze a special ability called "spiritual vision." According to him, this is the most commonly used and basic ability in the mystical field, which allows those who have activated spiritual vision to see more mysterious things and certain existences that were not previously noticeable.
Hearing this, Lu Ze immediately made an excuse to decline, saying he hadn't been sleeping well lately and didn't want to try. Seriously? I got a nosebleed before I even had my spiritual vision activated; if I did, my brain would be cooked!
And so, protected by the illusory ocean in his mind and through his own efforts to disguise himself, Luze finally managed to hold out until the end of the class. He and Klein said goodbye to Old Neil, and while chatting, they left the underground and walked up the spiral staircase to the corridor on the ground floor.
"Oh, right, I have something I need to talk to the captain about."
Luze spoke calmly to Klein.
"Then I'll go first."
Klein waved to him and left first.
Lu Ze watched him walk away, then went to Dunn's office and knocked. After receiving Dunn's permission, he pushed the door open and entered. Dunn was still sitting behind his desk, just as he had left, only now the air smelled of burning tobacco.
"Is there a problem?"
Dunn looked at him calmly.
Lu Ze took a deep breath.
He had actually considered whether the captain was reliable. After all, even Old Neil, the most senior member of the Night Watch, was in this state; it was hard to guarantee that Dunn wouldn't have problems. But recalling what had happened before, Dunn had fully fulfilled his duties as a Night Watchman, even showing some humanity as an enforcer. Besides, he had only seen Old Neil's problems; if Dunn were a bad guy, theoretically he would also carry the mark of the evil god—clearly, he didn't.
So Luze decided to trust Dunn.
"Captain, do you believe me?"
After making his decision, he spoke earnestly.
Dunn gave him a strange look. "What are you trying to say?"
"Old Neil seems a bit off."
