Chapter 3 Have you ever risked your life for yourself?
The phone was clearly busy, and Gavin couldn't hear it ringing in his room.
The two zombies outside showed no signs of being lured away by the ringing phone.
In the bathroom, Madison slowly filled the bathtub with water, while she sat on the steps at the edge of the tub, staring blankly at Gigi's body and vomit.
Even without a body, Gigi's head was still moving, opening and closing its mouth as it stared at Madison.
Madison and Gigi stared at each other for a good ten seconds before they suddenly got up, went to the bed, and grabbed a blanket to cover Gigi's head and the corpse.
As the blankets became soaked with blood, Madison breathed a sigh of relief, then simply stripped naked, got into the bathtub, sat down near the water, and began to rinse herself.
While rinsing, he seemed to remember something and suddenly gagged twice, then leaned over the edge of the bathtub and vomited incessantly.
Hearing Madison vomit, Gavin felt nauseous and his throat tightened; he almost wanted to throw up too.
Fighting back his nausea, Gavin dialed a few more of his teammates' numbers.
Without exception, no one answered the phone.
However, a faint sound of breaking glass could be heard from outside the window.
Gavin suspected that the zombies in the other rooms had broken through the glass and fallen into the yard.
Madison was startled by the sound of glass breaking. She jumped out of the bathtub in a panic and scrambled to the window to look out.
After glancing at him twice, he turned back and called out to Gavin helplessly.
"Outside……"
"Keep your fucking voice down!"
Snapped!
After being interrupted by Gavin's reminder, Madison instinctively slapped his mouth, then quickly turned back to look out the window.
After confirming that no zombies had been attracted by him, Madison left the window, squatted down, and came to Gavin's side to speak.
"There were about seventeen or eighteen people outside, all running incredibly fast, like zombies from Brad Pitt's new movie!"
"I know, Fuck, hurry up and get dressed so you can take my place. I'm not dressed yet!"
Gavin kicked him, and Madison quickly went back to the bathroom, scooped up some warm water from the tap, and rinsed himself twice.
Then she jogged to the closet and started rummaging through Gavin's clothes.
This estate is owned by the Dallas Cowboys' owner, and Gavin and the team have celebrated here more than once. It's even been a party venue for the Dallas Mavericks.
Therefore, each room in the villa is stocked with a considerable number of plus-size clothing to provide convenience for the Cowboys and Mavericks players.
Madison wore an oversized tracksuit, along with several layers of socks, and then added knee and elbow pads, layering them on top of each other.
Once he was dressed, he went to the door to relieve Gavin, holding up the door as his teammates kept banging on it, and said incoherently.
"Are we just going to stand here blocking the door? Stop messing around, we're dead, fuck!"
"There were over three hundred people last night, damn it, even basketball players came to join in the fun, what a fucking number!"
"Can't you hear it? There seem to be more people outside the door. We're doomed!"
"I have six fucking kids, damn it, what the hell am I going to do? Right, what about my kids, what about my family, I..."
"Just shut up, Madison. Don't force me to shove a knife in your mouth. Samoff will eat it."
As Gavin dressed, he cursed under his breath, causing Madison to turn around in anguish.
He leaned his head against the door, and within just a dozen seconds, tears began to fall rhythmically onto the carpet as the door shook.
While Gavin was putting on his socks, he saw Madison crying so hard that he simply threw the phone at Madison's feet and said...
"Call home, but it's best not to, because if you don't, there's still a glimmer of hope, buddy."
"And you, Gavin, did you call your family? Your mom or your dad? You're not married!"
Madison responded and crouched down to retrieve the phone.
No sooner had he squatted down than he heard a propeller-like sound that gradually increased in speed.
Chug tug tug tug…
The moment the sound reached the room, Madison gripped his phone tightly.
“Gavin!” he reminded him.
Gavin nodded in agreement.
"It's a helicopter."
"A helicopter! Great! We're saved!"
Madison let out an excited growl, then widened his eyes and kept shaking his head at the window, gesturing for Gavin to take a look.
Gavin nodded, put on his socks, and walked to the window.
But before he could get close to the window, the helicopter sound, which lasted only six or seven seconds, abruptly stopped, followed by the sound of the helicopter crashing and a violent explosion.
It's sizzling!
boom!
Boom!
"Fake!"
Madison was on the verge of collapse. His massive body collapsed to his knees in front of the door, and he said dejectedly.
"No need to look anymore, it's all over. Even the helicopter has crashed. No one can save us. We're completely finished..."
"We got lucky."
Gavin's sudden words interrupted Madison's despair, making him look over in surprise.
Following Madison's gaze, Gavin crouched by the window and pulled back part of the curtains, showing Madison the firelight coming from the blind spot on the left side of the window. Even from a distance, Madison could see dozens of figures crossing the courtyard, rushing towards the direction of the firelight and the sound of explosions.
Apart from a few unlucky zombies who fell into the pool and couldn't climb out for a while, all the zombies in the manor were attracted by the explosion.
Gavin, with a sigh of relief, drew the curtains and pointed behind Madison.
Following Gavin's directions, Madison suddenly realized that the impact had stopped!
He quickly pressed his ear against the quiet door to confirm.
Gavin glanced at Old Madison, then looked out the window. After waiting for three to five seconds, Madison turned around and made a safe gesture.
"They got away, damn it, we're lucky, we're really lucky!"
Madison was in a much better mood; it felt so good not to have zombies banging on the door. Even Gavin felt much more relaxed.
He casually drew the curtains, then went back to the wardrobe to continue getting dressed, while saying something to Madison.
"That bunch of things really looks like the zombies in Brad Pitt's new movie, they mutate quickly and run incredibly fast."
“I saw Gigi mutate after spitting out two breaths, and you also said that Leonard mutated a few seconds after being bitten.”
Brad Pitt's World War Z, which was released this year (2013), is quite popular recently.
At other times, Madison wouldn't mind following the conversation and chatting with Gavin about Pete's ex-wife.
But now, Madison just wants to find Pete and beat him to death.
Or let Pitt's ex-wife give you a quick death.
Seeing that Madison wasn't in a good mood, Gavin jumped around on the carpet a couple of times to get used to the feeling of his joints being locked up with multiple layers of protection, and then went to the fireplace.
Gavin took off his military knife and handed Madison an equally unsharpened one, saying softly.
"Don't just stand there, take it, you know what to do next."
"Got it, fucking touchdown!"
Madison gripped his saber tightly, nodded heavily, and continued in response.
"I'll be on your side just like I am during the game, man. Nobody can touch my quarterback before I go down!"
"That's right, just like in a competition: stay calm, focus, and give it your all!"
Gavin patted Madison on the shoulder.
"After you open the door in a bit, go directly to your room to get your phone, then go to the boss's room to find the gun."
That guy's an old cowboy; we've played with his shotgun before, and we even played frisbee with him yesterday afternoon.
As he spoke, Gavin decisively grabbed the doorknob, ready to open the door.
He's not the kind of person who stands still during a zombie apocalypse.
Rather than sit in his bedchamber without food or water, he would rather die on the road of desperate struggle.
but……
Just as Gavin gripped the doorknob tightly, Madison grabbed his wrist.
"and many more!"
Madison said, his voice trembling.
"Should we really go out? It's actually quite safe here. Maybe if we wait until morning, the police and militia will come to rescue us."
As soon as he finished speaking, Madison seemed to sense Gavin's displeasure and swallowed hard before continuing to emphasize.
"We're in the richest of the rich, aren't we? The mayor of Dallas was at a party last night, maybe there'll be a rescue!"
"Is it?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin spoke expressionlessly to Madison, who was filled with hope.
"Since Gigi mutated, more than six minutes have passed. How many cries for help have been heard during that time?"
"Less than three!"
"How many people were at the party? At least two or three hundred! Yet there was only one scream, one gunshot, and a brief sign of a helicopter starting up! What kind of mutation ratio is this?"
"If we apply this ratio to the police and military, especially since it's around 3 a.m., how many people do you think would survive?"
At this point, Gavin shook his head under Madison's desperate gaze and sneered.
"Rescue? Don't be ridiculous!"
"Instead of hoping for a rescue, let's be grateful that the exploding helicopter attracted a large number of zombies."
"We should be even more grateful for the fact that being bitten by that thing for a few seconds will cause a mutation."
"Once you and I are surrounded by zombies, the pain before death will at least not last too long."
"Most importantly, if you don't take advantage of the zombies being distracted by the explosion to try and find some food, water, and weapons, do you want to wait until the zombies are ready?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Gavin broke free from Madison and slowly and carefully turned the doorknob.
Click.
As the bolt opened, Gavin turned his head and gave Madison a cold laugh.
"Madison, have you ever risked your life for yourself?"
