Doomsday America
Chapter 13 What flew past?
Chapter 13 What flew past?
Madison, who was collecting toiletries and razors in a bag nearby, heard the chewing sound and quickly leaned over to call out to Gavin.
"Enjoy your meal, buddy! Don't forget about me!"
"Mmm, it's chiming in. Why don't you have a Coke to cool off first?"
Gavin tossed the iced cola with the lid on, and Madison immediately caught it gently.
For rugby players, throwing and catching is their specialty, even if you throw them a soft pile of poop...
Okay, that thing is really hard to catch, and no normal person would throw that kind of thing.
In short, Madison took a big gulp of iced cola and immediately let out a refreshing breath.
"Fuck, this feels fucking awesome!"
"Even if you asked me to empty this store, I wouldn't lack energy at this moment. It's exciting!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Madison quickly downed another sip of his iced cola.
But just as he was gulping down water, Gavin suddenly frowned and looked toward the broken glass.
He thought he heard a faint engine sound over there?
Gavin immediately put down his saber, switched the hamburger to his left hand, took a big bite of the hamburger, and then drew his gun with his right hand and walked towards the door.
"Madison!"
He gave a reminder, then pushed open the convenience store door and walked to the vicinity of the gas pump.
Inside the store, Madison, upon hearing his name called, silently put down his Coke and the packaging, picked up his sprayer, and stood at the door.
While the two were on guard, a Ford F-150 was speeding toward Dallas at at least 160 km/h.
Whoosh!
The sound of engines sped past the gas station.
Madison stared in disbelief, leaning against the convenience store door, and exclaimed in astonishment.
"Fuck, what just flew by?"
"Ha, that's a good joke."
Watching Ford's departing figure, Gavin took a few steps back with his gun in hand and came to Madison's side.
"But now is not the time for jokes. We need to act quickly. I'm worried that the car just now brought back the zombies that were lured away from the gas station, or even more zombies."
"Uh……"
Upon hearing this, Madison narrowed his eyes hesitantly and tentatively asked Gavin.
"That car is too fast, much faster than us. Even if the zombies hear the car, they won't be able to catch up, right?"
"Yeah, they can't catch up, but have you tested how long a zombie will chase a sound after it detects it?"
Gavin responded while holstering his pistol and then took a big bite of his hamburger.
The burgers at roadside convenience stores aren't exactly delicious; the buns are much thicker than those at KFC and other top chains, and the cheese and beef patties are smaller.
But Gavin still ate with great relish.
It wasn't that he was hungry, but rather that his stomach was being tormented by alcohol.
Feeling full from the hamburger, Gavin continued speaking to Madison.
“In the manor, whenever a sound that attracts zombies is heard, the zombies will quickly gather at the source of the sound.”
"Because the sound sources there all have fixed locations."
"But what if we replace the fixed sound source with a moving sound source, and the sound source moves so fast that the zombies can't catch up?"
"Will the zombie that can never reach the source of the sound eventually stop moving forward because it loses the sound, or will it keep moving in the direction where the sound disappears?"
At this point, Gavin patted Madison on the shoulder.
"Before witnessing something firsthand, we shouldn't rely on speculation and wishful thinking to justify our actions. This is about survival, not a Mark Twain-esque wish-fulfillment story. I don't like taking risks..."
“I know you don’t like taking risks, I understand what you mean.”
Madison interrupted, nodding emphatically.
Gavin smiled with relief and went back into the store to get himself a Coke.
He wasn't worried about Madison's brain; after all, American football is the sport with the most tactics in the world.
Every big man who makes a name for himself in rugby, even without a genius brain, can at least remember and understand tens of thousands of different tactics and make split-second decisions in the ever-changing game.
As long as Madison doesn't get too nervous, he rarely makes mistakes, just like he does during a game.
After swallowing the last bite of his burger, Gavin took a big gulp of ice-cold Coke, and then collected all the raw patties and bread, including the vegetable leaves, from the store into three large bags.
At the same time, the microwave oven beeped.
As Gavin took out the hamburger, Madison was putting four full bags into the truck bed.
When he returned to the store, he saw Gavin waiting for him with a hamburger.
"Wow, I'm flattered! The team leader actually handed me a hamburger. Next time I'll be swinging my towel by the water cooler with more force!" Madison joked, taking the hamburger and taking a big bite.
After devouring most of the hamburger, Madison glanced behind Gavin and smiled wryly.
"Just this one?"
"Eat something to fill your stomach first, or if you want to stuff yourself full, then let it mix with iced cola and stop in the roadside bushes while we're on our way, risking getting your butts eaten by zombies and going on a rampage?"
Gavin scoffed and continued ransacking the convenience store.
Madison noncommittally flicked his tongue and swallowed the entire hamburger in his second bite.
After finishing his hamburger, he took his empty Coke cup to the soda machine and filled it to the brim.
After gulping down his water, Madison let out a satisfied burp and said to Gavin, who was filling his cigarettes.
"This is the day I've drunk the most Coke since I started college."
"I love rugby because it has given me so much, but I also hate rugby because it has taken away all my happiness, shit!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Madison, carrying a shotgun, went to the innermost storage room of the convenience store.
Looking at the closed door in front of him, he knocked heavily to make sure there were no zombies making a fuss behind it.
He then opened the storage room and glanced around, his eyes landing on the neatly stacked empty oil drums against the wall.
These spare fuel cans are very common in the United States and have appeared in many games. They are the kind of fuel cans with a square body and a hose extending from the mouth.
Madison reached out his large hand, grabbed four oil drums, and went to the gas pump, trying his best to squeeze every last drop out of it.
The two explored methodically; Gavin was not idle, and Madison was not lazy either.
Before long, the truck bed of the Tyrannosaurus Rex pickup was filled with things by the two of them.
As Madison continued to load four barrels of diesel into the truck bed, he looked at the contents of the bed and said with a bitter face.
"Dog poop, lots of canned food, tomato, corn, beans, fruit, and canned meat, canned soup, canned fish, canned shrimp..."
"Am I going to have to live with these canned foods for the rest of my life?"
"Plus a dozen or so cans of oatmeal that tastes like shit?"
After saying that, Madison didn't expect Gavin to respond to his complaints, and put down the oil drum to continue filling it with oil.
But just as he was walking towards the convenience store, the sound of a car in the distance made him suddenly stop.
"Gavin, there's a car sounding in the direction of Dallas!"
He quickly shouted to Gavin, while taking the grenades off his back and holding them in his arms.
Inside the convenience store, upon hearing Madison's reminder, Gavin put down the plastic bag full of work gloves, socks, and underwear, drew his gun, and walked out of the store.
After exchanging a glance with Madison, Gavin listened for a moment, then spoke to Madison with a strange expression.
"Old Mike, does this voice sound familiar?"
"familiar?"
Madison listened for a moment, then stared in surprise.
"It's that Ford from before!"
As Madison concluded, the Ford that had been traveling at at least 160 kilometers per hour roared in from the direction of Dallas.
As the car drew closer, Gavin couldn't help but roll his eyes.
The car went even faster, now it was at least 180 kilometers per hour!
As the car sped toward the gas station, a rough, hoarse roar could be heard coming from inside.
"Shut your filthy mouth, William, I don't need you to remind me!"
"I just ran over an entire crew of actors, do you think I'd dare kill one more of you? At least I'd cut off your severed toe and shove it in your mouth!"
Whoosh!
The Ford sped past the gas station, and only the echoes from inside the car lingered in the dim night air.
As the sound of the car rapidly receding into the distance faded away, Gavin swallowed hard, then exchanged a speechless glance with Madison.
Meeting Gavin's gaze, Madison swallowed hard and whispered.
"I bet he didn't know the zombies were coming when he drove to Dallas."
"I guess you're right..."
Stab it! ! !
Before Gavin could finish his reply to Madison, a screeching sound of brakes suddenly came from afar.
The car came to an emergency stop!
