Chapter 103 Codename: Ambush
Chapter 103 Codename: Ambush
Eugene was startled by Gavin, quickly wiped the saliva off his clothes with his gloves, then rolled his eyes at Gavin and said in an annoyed tone.
"What's going on, boss? You scared me! Did you have something going on with this woman back on the farm?"
As he spoke, Eugene pointed to the dead zombie's face.
Gavin then lifted the tattered zombie head toward Eugene, cursing under his breath.
"I had a thing with your mother, you idiot. You were a sniper who almost got killed by a mere zombie, huh? You've really broadened my horizons!"
Gavin would use calmness to exert pressure on the more profound Steve.
But for the more unruly Eugene, Gavin only needed to give him a good scolding!
Gavin put the zombie head back on the ground, pointed to the water stains on the wall, and continued cursing.
"Where is your composure as a sniper? No matter how agile this zombie is, a zombie that's less than 1.7 meters tall can't possibly climb over the wall in a second!"
"Tell me, how long will it take you to draw your gun? Tell me!"
"Then take a good look at the watermark on the ground, look at that line of your work that stretches from the wall all the way back, a full four meters long!"
"I don't need to see the scene to know that your first choice when encountering zombies was to pull yourself back by your belt!"
"Sniper, spotter, Eugene! Where's your gun! Where's your knife and hammer! Did you see the zombie's face and then use your belt-grabbing hand to take care of your own manhood, you piece of shit!!!"
"What's the point of going back? Tell me, what's the point of going back!"
"I am right in front of you now. Will retreating allow you to avoid me, or will it allow you to overcome death?"
At this point, Gavin grabbed Eugene by the collar.
Then he...
Eugene was disdainfully released.
He remembered Eugene's spit just now; that damn Eugene was the real filth!
Seeing Gavin release him, Eugene opened his mouth in astonishment and stared blankly at Gavin.
He tilted his head in confusion and asked incredulously.
"Wait, I almost died, you know! I thought you'd at least give me a hug, not yell at me like this!"
"what!"
Gavin was so angry he laughed.
"Okay, Eugene, you don't want to hear me scold you, right? Then let's have a good talk about you wetting your pants..."
"Boss! You're my fucking boss! Scold me! Scold me all you want! I love this feeling! It's exactly the same as when I was yelled at by my superiors back in the army! This is the taste of home!"
Eugene quickly grabbed Gavin's wrist, then released his wrist and grabbed Gavin's leather arm guard, laughing and apologizing to Gavin.
"Boss, go ahead and curse. Actually, it's pretty satisfying to hear you curse. To be honest, I really thought I was going to die back then. That woman's teeth were less than two centimeters away from my hand!"
"Damn it, I shouldn't have gone that far to the toilet. The main problem was that I was afraid my big thing would scare Steve and make him feel ashamed!"
"grass……"
Seeing that Eugene was still being cheeky, Gavin was so angry he laughed. So, while laughing, he slapped Eugene's shoulder hard, almost knocking Eugene to the ground.
Eugene steadied himself with difficulty, shrugged at Gavin, and looked utterly shameless.
At this point, Gavin shook his head, let out a breath, and said.
"Don't let your guard down, buddy. I may not have fought in a war before, but ever since the apocalypse started, every time we leave the safe house, our war has begun."
"Even safe houses aren't absolutely safe; you should know that better than I do!"
"Do you remember what you said to me at noon? Did you think I'd let my guard down?"
"The truth is I never let my guard down, but you did. You left yourself out of your teammates' sight and put yourself in danger. And if you really die because of this, Eugene, who do you want to blow your head off?"
Gavin said one last thing to Eugene, then squatted down in front of the zombie.
Before Eugene could finish processing his words, he raised his right hand to Eugene and said.
"Knife."
"what?"
Eugene was taken aback, then instinctively bent down, pulled out a dagger, and handed it to Gavin.
Seeing this, Gavin chuckled and teased.
"Isn't it pretty quick to pull it out?"
"Ah... well... okay, I admit that the feeling of suddenly discovering zombies was indeed very exciting, and it made me a little forgetful."
"But don't worry, no one remembers this lesson better than I do."
Eugene squatted down next to Gavin and, unusually serious, spoke to him earnestly.
"The last time I was nervous about zombies was when I was facing a large group of them. I was afraid of the zombies' group nature and their numbers. But before today, I really treated one or two zombies as targets and toys."
"I almost died, that was a terrible feeling."
"But boss, seeing how furious you are with your cursing makes me realize how important I am to you. I knew you couldn't do without me. I'm the damn farm gun god, haha!"
"Fuck off!"
Seeing that Eugene was getting off-topic again, Gavin cursed and plunged the knife into the zombie's brain, stirring it around.
As he watched, Gavin couldn't help but curse.
"What's the point of looking at this? It's smashed to pieces!"
"Eugene, don't let it happen again. If it has to happen again, don't turn the special zombies into this mess!"
"Ah this..."
Hearing Gavin's words, Eugene innocently spread his hands and chuckled.
"Boss, we couldn't tell anything at first, right? Even Steve said this woman isn't deaf!"
"So, Steve saw her the night before the apocalypse, so this zombie couldn't have been slapped by someone before the apocalypse, damaging her cochlea and causing hearing loss?"
“When something is special enough, it must have something worth investigating. Even if none of us are forensic scientists or anatomists, we can still find something if we get together!”
"But now, what am I supposed to discover? How disgusting is the brain you smashed to pieces like this!"
Gavin angrily stabbed the zombie in the chest, then stood up and climbed over the wall.
Eugene, exasperated, drew his knife and shouted at Gavin from a distance.
"Boss, this zombie is completely useless now, so can I still use it to vent my anger?"
"Fuck you!"
Hearing Eugene's words, Gavin cursed from afar.
Hearing Gavin's curses, Eugene grinned and pulled the knife from the zombie.
Madison leaned over to Eugene and teased him.
"Have you been fucking blasted by the boss? You're laughing so happily."
"You know nothing!"
Eugene chuckled as he wiped the blood off his knife with the zombie's sleeve.
"That wasn't cursing, it was concern. I'm fucking admiring this guy more and more. He curses like a veteran, and he does things the same way. And I am a veteran!"
At this point, Eugene grinned, revealing a vicious smile.
Madison gently patted his chest and whispered a reminder.
"It's not that guy, it's the boss!"
"Yeah, yeah, boss, officer, captain, general, I can call you whatever I want, what the hell are you to tell me what to do? You're not the boss, haha~"
Amidst laughter, Eugene and his companion scaled the wall and headed toward Gavin.
On the other hand, within a radius of about fifty meters around the zombie footprints, Steve and Nikita maintained a distance of about six meters, bending down to observe everything on the ground. Nikita kicked aside the cover on the ground in disgust to see if there was anything underneath, and then asked Steve a question.
"You seem very afraid of him. Haven't you known him for a long time?"
"Huh? You mean Gavin?"
Upon hearing the question, Steve responded without looking up.
Is it possible that the longer you know someone, the more you can't help but feel afraid of them, or perhaps it's not fear, but respect?
At this point, Steve took a deep breath, and couldn't help but recall Gavin from back then.
As he recalled, he continued speaking to Nikita.
“My father, my grandfather, and I, along with several generations of our family, grew up on King’s Farm.”
“I’m even four years older than Gavin. If we’re being really serious, I could say I watched Gavin grow up. Don’t you think I have no reason to be afraid of Gavin?”
At this point, Steve looked at Nikita, who shook her head and said...
"I am not you, so I will not speculate about you."
"Wow~"
Upon hearing this, Steve gave a thumbs up and whispered.
“You’re a lot like her, little girl, but I assure you, young Gavin was definitely more rational and smarter than you!”
“I heard my grandfather say that the Kim family farm had its glory days in his generation, when it absorbed two nearby farms and expanded to a size of 5,000 acres.”
"But by the time I came of age, the farm had shrunk to just over two thousand acres, after all, the old man wasn't exactly a good farmer."
"As for now, you already know, don't you? 160,000 acres is far from Gavin's limit. Under his leadership, we even control Lake Richard and all the forests downstream of the dam."
"And me... haha, although I'm older than Gavin, I was actually raised by Gavin. He could beat me when I was six years old when I was only two and a half."
"He taught me how to shoot, he taught me how to ride a horse, and he also taught me a lot about management, which made me stand out from the original fifteen cowboys on the farm. Even if I manage thousands of cowboys and dozens of work groups with different divisions of labor, there will be no problem."
"So you see, you're very smart, but you're still learning, while Gavin has always been a source of intellectual output!"
"I don't know if you can understand, but when I see Gavin, it's like seeing my mentor!"
"I can understand, just like when I see my mother."
Nikita nodded in understanding.
Upon hearing this, Steve smiled and nodded.
"Now you understand why I'm afraid of him, right? Oh, and there's another impressive thing about Gavin that I haven't told you about yet!"
"Do you know why Gavin was able to enter the NFL at the age of nineteen? It's because he graduated from college after only one year, and he studied Chinese, the most difficult subject in the Languages and Literatures department!"
"It only took him a year, and that's only because he needs to complete at least a full academic year to get his degree. Otherwise, I bet he could graduate in a month at most. He's a true genius!"
"Wow, that's really amazing! My mom has a few Chinese books at home, and I've studied them on my own for a while, so I know how difficult those square characters are!"
Nikita was finally a little surprised.
As she was surprised, Gavin was already walking towards them.
"What are you talking about? I think I heard my name called."
He asked the two from a distance.
Upon hearing this, Nikita straightened up and said admiringly.
"We were talking about your Chinese learning; you're a true genius!"
"Uh……"
Upon hearing Nikita's words, Gavin quickly raised his hand to cover his forehead.
Family members, does anyone understand? This is definitely one of the topics he least wants to talk about!
Seeing Gavin's helpless and puzzled expression, Steve let out a couple of breaths to relax, then smiled at Gavin.
"Dude, it's been so many years since we graduated, and you're still so humble!"
"Uh... modesty... okay, stop talking."
Gavin waved helplessly at Steve, then checked the time and said softly.
“It’s almost 2:30. Let’s stop looking and go meet with them, then get back to work.”
After saying that, Gavin led Steve and the other man to join Eugene and Madison.
After the four of them stood in front of him, Gavin adjusted his cowboy hat and said.
"I'm sorry, guys, after a quick investigation, we have no good news, only bad news."
"Because I thought about it, and in the face of life and death, there are no isolated cases. Once an example appears, we must always be on guard."
"Initially, I really wanted to prove that this zombie was just an isolated case, and even more so, that it had been so special since the outbreak of the apocalypse, because I really didn't want to see the zombie undergo more and more dangerous changes over time!"
"But that was an act of escapism, and now this special zombie has served as a wake-up call for us by nearly taking one of our members with it!"
"Therefore, in order to commemorate its profound influence on our subsequent exploration activities."
"It serves as a further reminder to every living being in the future to be wary of special beings like it."
"I've decided to give it a special name, to refer to it and to any other possible versions of it."
"That name is... Ambush!"
At this point, Gavin looked up at everyone.
Madison was all smiles, completely unconcerned.
Eugene rubbed his thigh with lingering fear.
Steve nodded silently.
Nikita frowned, deep in thought, and then spoke.
"A very fitting name. Just hearing it tells you what kind of form this zombie will likely take."
"That's right, isn't that the meaning of the name? Tonight, we will expand all the information about the ambush victims into our zombie response manual."
Gavin responded to Nikita with a sound, then tapped his watch.
"Work continues. After Eugene and Steve clear away all the cow dung, they get to work making billboards and trying to put as many up as possible before six o'clock."
"As for the three of us, I plan to clear the roads leading from the farmland to other small farms and search for as many of the few remaining survivors as possible after the apocalypse!"
At this point, Gavin turned around decisively and led Nikita over the wall again.
Then, Gavin and his two companions drove the Raptor further and further away.
In the back seat, Nikita checked his guns and equipment while whispering to Gavin.
“My mother once said that if we see a mouse in the house, there must be many more mice in the house. So, sir, my instincts tell me you’re right. The zombies are probably really changing!”
"What is this, a woman's sixth sense?"
Hearing Nikita's words, Gavin smiled and shook his head, then tapped the steering wheel and continued speaking.
"Didn't you read the zombie response manual? Then you should know that I already used cows to verify that zombies also exhibit signs of death."
"Zombies do resemble the dead, but they are also divided into the living and the dead, and every kind of life that can be considered to be alive will always have endless variations."
"But you don't need to worry, because although Eugene was bombarded by the ambushers, after examining the ambushers' corpse, I confirmed that, at least so far, it has not shown any real evolutionary phenomena."
"Its flesh is as soft as any other zombie's, its skin hasn't evolved to be tougher, and its muscles haven't evolved to be stronger!"
"That's at least half good news, isn't it?"
