Chapter 234 Meeting J.P. Morgan Again
Chapter 234 Meeting J.P. Morgan Again
At 2 p.m., Larry arrived again at Morgan's private library on East 36th Street.
Returning here after several months felt like a lifetime ago to Larry.
Previously, Larry had called McKinley, Morgan's shrewd, dark-haired secretary, to convey his respect for Morgan and his appointment request.
McKinley was surprised to hear it was Larry calling, but you could also tell he was very happy.
"Mr. Morgan has mentioned you before, young man. You've made a deep impression on him. You've chosen to visit him now, surely there's something you need?"
Larry laughed and said, "Yes, I think I have some business to discuss with Mr. Morgan."
McKinley was surprised to hear Larry's words; a deep breath could be heard coming from him on the other end of the line. Then, he let out a not-so-abrupt laugh.
“Did I hear that right, Mr. Livingston? You can now do business with Mr. Morgan? Oh, no offense, but if there’s anything I can do for you, then I should do it for you.”
Larry smiled, though the other person obviously couldn't see it through the microphone.
Larry then said seriously, “You can consider this an ignorant fool asking Mr. Morgan for advice. I certainly have no intention of bothering Mr. Morgan with my shady business dealings, but there are some unprecedented things that I don’t think anyone in New York City can answer for me except him.”
McKinley paused for a moment on the other end of the line before speaking in a relaxed tone, "Okay, I'll pass that on to Mr. Morgan. You can come over on Saturday afternoon. That's usually when he meets with private guests."
.
It was Saturday, and Larry stood beneath Morgan's private library, gazing up at the building. The nervousness he felt the first time he'd been here was gone; instead, he was filled with calculation, scheming, and secret planning on how to articulate his views to Mr. Morgan later.
The security guard in the black uniform at the entrance remained stern. After Larry explained his purpose, the guard called the office to inquire.
Not long after, McKinley, the secretary who wore gold-rimmed glasses, came down to greet him personally.
Larry raised his eyebrows, quickly stepped forward, and said respectfully, "How could I trouble you to come and greet me in person?"
McKinley smiled, looked Larry up and down, nodded and said, "Young man, you're still as handsome as ever! But this time, I see a maturity in your eyes that doesn't belong to your age. Now I'm guessing you really are here to talk business with Mr. Morgan."
"To be precise, it's a groundbreaking business, and I had to consult Mr. Morgan because I wasn't sure," Larry said sincerely.
“It doesn’t matter, let’s go. I told Mr. Morgan about your purpose before, and he’s very interested in it too.” After saying that, McKinley led the way. The two walked through the lobby and took the steam elevator to the third floor of the library.
In the spacious and bright reception hall outside the library, the man dressed as a butler was still there, with two security guards behind him.
The butler pointed to the table in front of the counter and said coldly, "I'm sorry, sir, we need to give you a full body check to determine if you have brought any inappropriate items."
Larry nodded, thinking to himself that this was the same procedure as before.
Despite having received Morgan's personal permission and even being personally picked up by McKinley, the tight security measures would not be altered by such a minor incident.
Just like the first time he came, Larry was carrying a small leather suitcase containing documents, including a trusteeship business cooperation proposal written by Mr. Porter and an asset report on Bausch & Lomb written by Goldman Sachs.
Two security guards in black suits came up and carefully checked Larry twice. After confirming that there was nothing unusual, they nodded to the butler.
The other two security guards in suits also carefully inspected the small leather case containing the documents, even turning each page of the stack of documents to make sure nothing was wrong before speaking to Larry. "Thank you for your cooperation." During this time, McKinley watched with his hands behind his back. After all the checks were completed, he smiled and said to Larry, "Just routine, isn't it? You're not bothered by this, are you?"
Larry waved his hand. "It's only right. How could I be unhappy about it?"
Larry thought to himself, McKinley is like another eye and another mouth of Mr. Morgan. Even if he has opinions, how could he show any strange words or expressions in front of him?
It is said that the most successful sign of a man is having a smart and capable male secretary.
Judging from Mr. Morgan and McKinley, that must be the case.
After the inner door opened, McKinley patted Larry on the back and led him to the outer room of the library.
There is no door from here to the Morgan Library. Larry could see from afar the densely packed chestnut-colored bookshelves inside, filled with books.
At the far end of the library, the large desk, more than 3 meters long, still stands out. A slightly overweight man sits behind the desk, a cigar between his fingers, talking to a young man.
The young man was handsome, tall, and impeccably dressed, exuding a composed and refined air. Yet, when facing Mr. Morgan, he displayed a nervousness that Larry could sense.
There was no one else in the library at the moment, and the two spoke very softly. Larry didn't want to appear as if he were prying into someone's secrets, so he stood at a distance.
McKinley glanced around the library and whispered to Larry, "Let's wait a bit; their conversation is likely to go on for a while."
Larry immediately noticed McKinley's use of the phrase "the two of them" and concluded that the young man's relationship with Morgan was definitely not ordinary.
After a while, Mr. Morgan raised the cigar in his hand, frowned, and gestured to the young man to make himself at home.
The young man bowed respectfully to him, then turned and walked out.
Mr. Morgan's gaze lingered on the young man's retreating figure, a slight gloom on his face. However, he then spotted Larry and McKinley waiting at the door, and a half-smile crept across his face. He spoke loudly to his secretary,
"Is that Larry Livingston? Let him in, I'd love to hear what he has to say."
Upon hearing Morgan's words, the young man couldn't help but scrutinize Larry intently.
For some reason, Larry could sense from his eyes that the look in his eyes was not friendly.
Larry nodded and smiled at him, then strode off and followed McKinley into the library.
