Chapter 35 Thorin Oakenshield

On the road west of the Shire.

Due and Gandalf were sitting in a carriage pulled by the pony Derpy, leisurely heading west.

Their trip was to the Blue Mountains.

After the evil dragon Smaug occupied the Lonely Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield led the dwarf refugees from the Lonely Mountain to settle in the Blue Mountains.

Gandalf needs to deliver the relic entrusted to him by King Thráin II to Thorin Oakenshield who lives in the Blue Mountains.

As for Due, he came with Gandalf, ostensibly to meet the heir of Durin's dwarf clan, but actually to check in at the Blue Mountains.

"Gandalf, there are only two of us in the expedition team now. Are you sure you can convince Thorin Oakenshield to go to Lonely Mountain?" Dewi looked at him speechlessly. "I dare not leave the mandrake to Bilbo's care, or I'm afraid I'll find his corpse when I come back!"

The Blue Mountains where Thorin Oakenshield is located are not far away to the west of the Shire. Gandalf and Duey walked for a week and arrived at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

After the evil dragon Smaug occupied the Lonely Mountain, the dwarves of Durin were forced to flee, moving from place to place, and finally settled in the Blue Mountains.

There used to be two Dwarf city-states in the Blue Mountains, Belegost and Nogrod, but they gradually declined and became deserted, leaving behind many mines and tunnels deep into the mountains. Duey came to the dwarf settlement of Durin with Gandalf.

This was the first time he had seen a dwarf.

The dwarves also looked at the two tall strangers, Due and Gandalf, with curiosity.

"We are looking for Thorin, Thorin Oakenshield. Can you tell me where he is now?"

Gandalf asked a dwarf.

The dwarf looked at Gandalf and Duee strangely, then pointed behind him.

"He's in the blacksmith shop at the very back. If you want to find him, go there."

After thanking the dwarf, Gandalf took Dewi to the blacksmith shop.

He was holding a hammer and hammering on a piece of red-hot iron, sparks flying everywhere.

He had long black hair and a long beard, and was short in stature, but his muscles were exceptionally well-developed. The heavy hammer looked like a piece of cake in his hands, and he could easily hammer the iron block into shape.

Gandalf raised his hand in greeting:

"Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thráin, grandson of Thor, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gandalf, Gandalf the Grey."

Thorin pretended not to hear and continued to work on the iron.

Gandalf didn't mind and began to look around the blacksmith shop. He pulled a heavy sword from the shelf, held it in his hand and felt it carefully. He commented, "The weapon forging craftsmanship of the dwarves is indeed superb, even compared with the elves."

"Humph!"

Hearing the elf, Thorin, who was forging iron, snorted coldly.

There was disdain and contempt in his tone.

He raised his head and looked at Gandalf and Due with cold and suspicious eyes.

"What do you want from me?"

Gandalf got straight to the point.

"Thorin Oakenshield, as the heir to the throne of the Dwarves of Durin, are you willing to shoulder the responsibilities of an heir, reclaim your lost homeland, and reclaim the Lonely Mountain?"

Thorin was not aroused by this, and gave Gandalf a cold look and sneered.

"Don't you know that the Lonely Mountain has been occupied by an evil dragon? The Dwarves of Durin are now divided. Do you think we have the ability to duel with the dragon?"

Gandalf shook his head.

"As far as I know, the dragon has been sleeping for a long time. You don't need to fight the dragon directly. You just need to steal the Arkenstone, the dwarven treasure.

You can take the Arkenstone as the heir of Durin's clan, gather the other dwarves, reorganize the army and drive the dragon out of the Lonely Mountain."

There was a gleam in Thorin's eyes, and he was clearly interested.

But he still looked at Gandalf and Due with suspicion.

"You're so eager to help us? What are your conditions?"

"I don't need anything, my goal is the dragon." Gandalf explained.

"I've noticed some unusual movements among the orcs lately. They're moving in an orderly fashion, which means a new leader has emerged. To prevent the orcs and dragons from joining forces, I need to leverage the power of the dwarves to eliminate this potential dragon threat first."

"What about him?"

Thorin turned his questioning gaze directly to Dui, who had been silent.

Dui frowned at Thorin's suspicious look.

"Don't worry about me. I'm only here at Gandalf's invitation. I have no interest in your affairs and will not interfere."

Noticing Dewi's displeasure, Gandalf looked at Thorin seriously.

"Duiir is a powerful wizard. He helped the hobbits defeat the Huorn of the Old Forest, and even went deep into the Barrow-Gornlik to defeat the wights and escape unscathed. His name is well-known throughout the wilds of Eriador, and his magic is beyond my reach.

If you want to reach the Lonely Mountain safely, or even face the dragon, Duir is your guarantee."

Hearing Gandalf's serious words, Thorin looked at Dewi with a serious look.

Gandalf is not an unknown figure among dwarves, elves, and humans, although he is more often portrayed as a wise man who often travels around to organize various forces to fight against darkness.

But no one would doubt his strength.

Naturally, I would not disbelieve what he said.
