Who would study psychology if they didn't have some kind of problem?

Chapter 35 Let's see what you're capable of (Please read on)
Regardless of how the veteran counselors present viewed Nan Zhuren, the new counselor, they all involuntarily sat up straight at that moment.

Even the bearded man and the bald man, Yang, became completely focused.

The reason is simply that Nan Zhuren's current consultation conversion rate is extremely high.

Everyone was envious.

For a typical new counselor, it's considered a success if their first consultation doesn't result in an immediate complaint and a request to change counselors.

To have a long-term, stable visitor, you should wait until at least the second month.

In contrast, Nan Zhuren handled his first client—a client who had been transferred from another counselor—with ease from the very first meeting.

So far, Nan Zhuren has only received nine visitors, but nearly half of them are willing to stay at Yannuo Center for continued counseling.

With a conversion rate approaching 50%, this surpasses that of the vast majority, or rather almost all, of the consultants present.

Only those with seniority, including supervisor Weng Pingting, could barely outrank Nan Zhuren.

Everyone was curious about how Nan Zhuren conducted her consultations.

In particular, the first visitor of Nan Zhuren caused quite a stir. What exactly happened during the consultation?

Some even picked up pens and prepared to engage in a lively shorthand session, just like in their student days.

……

Nan Zhuren cleared his throat: "The visitor is an 18-year-old girl, a local who just entered university. Her family situation..."

The audience didn't react much; this is all basic information. A counselor's first consultation is sometimes called a "data-gathering consultation," the purpose of which is to understand the client's basic situation.

"According to the client's complaint, she has recently experienced significant and persistent low mood, loss of appetite, and difficulty concentrating, which has severely interfered with her schoolwork and interpersonal relationships. After being diagnosed with depression at the hospital, she subsequently underwent psychological counseling and treatment, but her condition did not improve, and she changed counselors several times..."

Everyone's eyes sharpened, and only now did they begin to reveal the real key information they were seeking.

In the initial situation analysis, the most important information is the "three impressions", namely, "the impression of the visitor on himself", "the impression of the people around him on the visitor", and "the impression of the counselor on the visitor".

What Nan Zhuren is referring to now is "the visitor's impression of themselves," also known as "the visitor's chief complaint."

swish—swish—

Those in the know have already started shorthand.

"Regarding the impressions of those around the client, since this is the first consultation, we haven't collected any information yet. We did get some information from the client's mother, but you all know what I mean, it's roughly like this: the client is a well-behaved and sensible daughter..." Everyone nodded slightly. This is also a major drawback of commercial psychological counseling: because the counselor only communicates with the client one-way, it's impossible to collect enough information, and this part is often omitted from many files.

Only in large-scale environments such as businesses, schools, or even the military can truly complete materials be obtained.

brush--

I remember relatively little about the pen tip sliding motion.

"Through my observation, the client's behavior differed significantly from that of someone with depression. Before the consultation began, the client showed a desire to explore their surroundings; at the same time, when mentioning certain related words such as 'mother' and 'school,' there were obvious emotional fluctuations, which did not match the 'depressive mood' state of depression; while I was speaking, the client was able to focus their attention on me for a considerable period of time. Initially, I had a suspicion that the client was a 'student with school phobia pretending to be depressed and skipping school,' but the variety of emotions the client expressed was so great, it could even be said to be too much, which piqued my interest..."

Mood swings? There are many types of emotions.
Pause—Swish—

The younger consultant paused for a moment, a hint of understanding flashing in her eyes, a touch of admiration rising in her heart, before continuing to take notes.

Unlike novice counselors who rely solely on "talk therapy," experienced counselors are able to analyze clients through their body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, and so on. They can then compare the client's statements with their behavior to see if they are consistent, which is an important basis for the counselor's judgment.

Behaviorist psychologists at the top of the field can even roughly judge a client's state by analyzing their behavior without them having to speak.

I just didn't expect that Ms. Nan, a counselor in her early twenties, would be so experienced.

The reactions of the bearded and bald Yang differed from those of the younger consultants; a nonchalant smile appeared on their lips.

Experienced psychologists judge a client's condition based on outward appearances, which is based on experience; but rash young people make judgments based on a client's behavior, which is gambling!
Thinking this, the bearded man tilted his handsome chin upwards another three degrees, feeling much more relaxed. He had initially thought this newcomer had some professional judgment method, but it turned out he was just gambling?
Bald Yang began to feel indignant. He knew the reason he was being suppressed was because Nan Zhuren had taken on the first case. He had initially thought Nan had some unique skill, but now it seemed it was purely luck. How could he possibly accept that?

As for why they were so sure that Nan Zhuren relied on "gambling," it's simple—because they could only gamble, and most of the time they were wrong.

Other counselors, neither senior nor young, began to focus their attention. They were more curious about how Nan Zhuren would verify his hypothesis and build a good counseling relationship so that clients would decide to purchase expensive counseling packages.

Nan Zhuren didn't look at them; his memories began to fill with that consultation.

"To understand what those emotions were in the client, I used a projective test to verify them. I presented cards with different images to the client and found that her emotions toward 'school,' 'mother,' and 'me' were consistent with those toward insects like 'spider'—all of them were feelings of fear or 'apprehension.'"

"I then examined the degree of my fear and found that what the client feared was my identity traits as a 'male,' and her fear of school extended from this, which is a kind of generalization. As for her fear of her mother, it was not directly related to the above two, so I did not consider it in the first priority."

"After I pointed these points out, I directly confronted the client, expressing that our positions were aligned, and successfully established a good therapeutic relationship—the basis for this judgment was that I could clearly feel that the tension the client had been experiencing since the start of the consultation had been relieved..."

Boom!
A strange noise interrupted Nan Zhuren's words.

It's been over two weeks since the book was released, and I'm still only seeing single-digit reads... It's a bit... um, I feel like I need some psychological counseling...
