Warhammer 40: Doom
Chapter 21 The aftermath
Chapter 21 The aftermath
The crisis of the city's fall has been temporarily averted, and the main territory has been preserved in an incredible way, still standing tall in Nur.
The city gates reopened, and the night guards dragged their weary bodies back, still feeling that everything that had just happened was like a dream, an illusion of surviving a catastrophe.
The baby in King Norwick's arms was fast asleep, his chubby little face full of peace. He was sleeping comfortably, and unconsciously twisted his body to find a comfortable position.
Among the welcoming crowd, many people were crying; they may have lost a husband, son, father, or brother.
Some wept with joy because their loved ones had survived the extinction-level war.
"Take a headcount." King Norwick calmly observed everything without hesitation, his stern face showing no sign of relief. He turned to the Grand Swordsman of the court and gave the order:
"We don't have much time left, so we must seize the opportunity. Notify the commander of the 'Night Guards' to quickly regroup, assess their combat strength, and prepare to hunt down the orcs."
“I know.” Xilan nodded solemnly, then left the king’s side to personally convey the order.
From the crowd emerged a noblewoman with shimmering blonde hair and a crystal crown on her head. As she passed, people bowed slightly and made way for her.
The lady wore a deep and elegant blue dress, exuding a gentle and tranquil temperament. Her demeanor was composed and poised, displaying both grandeur and grace, with a noble yet approachable air.
"Norwick!" She walked hurriedly, lifting her skirt as she approached King Norwick.
Within the Guardian Realm, only one person addresses the King by his first name: Daisy Klaus Norwick, King Norwick's first wife and Queen of the Guardian Realm.
"Are you alright?" Daisy's porcelain-white face was full of concern as she subconsciously asked, even circling her husband to check if his armor was damaged.
"fine."
"Thanks to him, most of the soldiers survived." Facing his lover, Novick's serious expression relaxed slightly, and a rare gentle smile appeared on his face.
He raised his arm, gesturing for his wife to look at the swaddled baby covered by the cloak.
"A child?" Upon seeing that it was an infant, Daisy's long, golden eyebrows furrowed, and she looked at her husband with a puzzled expression.
She couldn't understand how a human baby could appear on a battlefield filled with the deafening shouts of battle, destruction, and death—a baby representing hope and new life.
Today's battle was truly unbelievable. The guardians of the main domain were prepared to perish together with the enemy, but then the fierce battlefield suddenly exploded, and the orcs scattered in all directions. Most of the Night Guards survived.
"Is such that……"
King Norwick recounted his experiences in a magnetic voice, as if chanting an epic poem.
More and more people gathered around him, all looking at the miracle child in his arms, who had miraculously saved Nur, with incredulous eyes.
Ms. Daisy's thin lips parted slightly, her emerald green eyes trembling. She reached out and took the baby from Norwick's arms, asking, "Does he have a name yet?"
"Doom! Doom Norwick!"
King Norwick named his son "Destruction," used "King" as his surname, and introduced his infant son's name to his wife.
“The Child of Destruction.” Daisy lowered her head and kissed Doom’s forehead with her lips, whispering, “Also the ‘Child of Miracles’ who brings miracles!”
How should I educate him?
The tradition of guarding the main domain is that men are responsible for becoming warriors or other productive professions, while women are responsible for educating and raising the next generation and imparting necessary knowledge.
Most importantly, before a woman becomes a wife, she must learn psychological counseling, constantly correcting and guiding the next generation, and helping the child embark on the path chosen by his father.
Noticing the crowd around him, King Norwick lowered his head and whispered in his wife's ear, "King of the future! King of warriors!"
Queen Daisy's body stiffened, somewhat unable to believe what she was hearing. She looked up at King Norwick, then turned to look at the two tall figures in the distance who were calming the crowd—her and King Norwick's biological son.
Faced with his wife's questioning gaze, Norwick gently shook his head, indicating that there was no need to ask any more questions. He simply gently held her shoulder and said firmly, "Do your best to guide him and prevent him from going astray."
Daisy fell silent, looking down at the baby in her arms, her trembling eyes seemingly lost in thought.
"Night Watchers!" King Norwick stomped up on the high ground, raised his arms, and shouted, silencing the clamor of the crowd with his roar: "You only have one chance!"
His imposing face was now stern, his eyes sweeping intently over each guard: "Now that the orc army is leaderless and fragmented, our opportunity has arrived!"
"There is no time for grief. We must pursue them immediately and wipe out the orc forces to avoid another siege."
"Three minutes!" King Norwick held up three fingers and said in an unquestionable manner, "You have three minutes to say goodbye, then assemble at the training ground and prepare for battle."
We'll be on our way in three minutes—it was a harsh, almost cruel order.
A team that has just gone through a life-or-death battle has only three minutes to rest before bidding farewell to the main domain and setting off again for an expedition with no return date in sight.
The Night Guards did not complain; they silently clenched their left fists and struck their chests in salute to their king.
Their fists clashed, ringing out with a sharp clang. They would carry out their orders; their duty was to act without hesitation.
With a simple hug to say goodbye to their loved ones, the pure white-clad warriors picked up their weapons, headed to the training ground to assemble their troops, adjust their mindset, and prepare for the next battle.
Three minutes later, the Night Guards stood in neat rows in the training ground, awaiting the battle plan.
"Elton Cena!"
King Norwick called out a name, a name that represented the fastest speed.
"My King." A warrior clad in specially made armor stepped out of the ranks, holding a giant spear to his side, and knelt on one knee.
"You set off immediately to inquire whether the knight has forgotten his duty, that glorious mission that has been passed down from the colonial era."
Norwick remained expressionless, but made no attempt to hide the anger in his words: "And tell them, if I don't see them within 48 hours, the knights will be forever erased from Nur's history!"
"Yes, ma'am! I will convey your instructions precisely!"
Having said that, Sena got up, mounted the anti-gravity motorcycle next to him, attached the giant spear to the body, twisted the throttle, and sped away at supersonic speed to convey King Norwick's decree to the Wasteland Knight.
"Leave a thousand men to guard the city, and all other combat units will set off. We will split up during the battle, break into smaller groups, and pursue the orcs flexibly, doing our best to strike at their manpower and clean up the mess."
His gaze swept over the standing Night Guards, Norwick raised his sword hilt, flicked out a light blade, and roared, "Go! Fearless Night Guards!"
"We are Nur's sharpest blade! To slay all our enemies!"
"We are Nur's stronghold! We are bound to win!"
With a battle cry, the Night Guard set off on their hunting expedition.
They fought in the wilderness, in the mountains, and among the enemy, vowing to wipe out all the enemies.
Three months later, King Norwick returned with a small detachment, and Queen Daisy was there to greet him once again.
In the royal palace's rear garden, Norwick, still in his armor, sat on a stone bench. Before him stood the queen, who looked worried, a hint of fear in her eyes.
"Norwick." She called softly, her melodious voice trembling with unease.
Queen Daisy knelt down, using her hands as a pillow, and rested her face on Norwick's lap, drawing courage and peace from her husband.
"What happened?" Novick raised his hand to stroke his lover's blond hair, but hesitated when he noticed patches of blood on his gauntlet.
“That child.” Daisy raised her arm and pressed down on Norwick’s large hand, feeling a rare moment of calm. She closed her eyes and said slowly, “I’m a little afraid of that child. I feel a deep fear when I’m with him.”
