Trying to get benefits from John was a ridiculous joke. If John didn't need to continue his strategic moves in Japan, hoping to leverage their talent to accumulate more intellectual property, he probably would have abandoned these guys long ago!

In other words, the neon lights still have value. If they had no value at all, John would have broken off cooperation with these guys long ago.
