Chapter 114 Just because you can't do it doesn't mean others can't.
In 1938, Alan Bloomlin, a first-class honors graduate of Imperial College London, first proposed the theory of slot antennas, which was initially developed for television broadcasting research.
Three years later, Henry George Booker, a first-class honors graduate of Cambridge University, ingeniously introduced the Babienne principle from optics into the field of electromagnetism, enriching the theory of slot antennas. Unfortunately, World War II began, and this achievement was shelved. It was not until the end of the war that Booker formally published the electromagnetic Babienne principle. At the same time, based on this principle, he proposed the concepts of planar slot and waveguide slot antennas.
This shows how profound Britain's cultural heritage is. Unfortunately, World War II devastated Europe, and all the talented people went to America!
The British have been trying for so long, and they still can't produce a qualified product!
A planar slot antenna requires slots to be cut into a flat surface to form parallel, elongated slots. The width of these slots is half a wavelength. Fighter jets commonly use the X-band, with wavelengths ranging from 25 mm to 37.5 mm. Half a wavelength is about ten millimeters. During manufacturing, the error cannot exceed two-thousandths, which results in a manufacturing error requirement of 0.02 millimeters!
If it's just this level of precision, then advanced CNC machine tools can meet it. But... it has to have an internal cavity structure, and the gap has to be a multi-layered structure, which has to be welded together layer by layer. That would be incredibly difficult!
Planar slotted antennas have many advantages: low profile, flat structure, light weight, small size, robust structure, low sidelobes, and low feed loss... Unfortunately, if the manufacturing technology is not up to par, all of these advantages are wasted.
Even the technologically advanced British can't do it, so how could you Easterners possibly manufacture it?
Jennis absolutely refused to believe it!
"What do you mean by that? Are you doubting us?" Qin Liang sneered. "No wonder Europe lags behind the United States. Look at the United States, recruiting talent everywhere, and then look at you... Never mind, let's skip this topic. Mr. Sabil, we still need to go to the United States to investigate this airborne radar..."
“Wait!” Peterman said, “Mr. Qin, since your company has this technology, could you… demonstrate it to us?”
“That’s right. Since you keep saying you have the relevant technology, then show it to us!” Janice said.
"Demonstration? We won't do something so brainless. This processing technology is as simple as a thin sheet of paper; it's easy to see through. You... you're trying to steal our technology, aren't you?"
A group of British men blushed.
“Mr. Qin, of course not. We in Britain have always valued intellectual property rights the most. If you really have this technology, then we are willing to pay to buy it!” Peterman said.
Even the Americans don't teach this technology! It's absolutely worth it to be able to buy it from an Asian!
Qin Liang thought for a moment and said, "It would be too formal to say we'll buy it. How about this: you give us the technology for the complete set of avionics equipment we've purchased this time, and we'll give you the antenna processing technology. We can exchange technologies, how about that?"
Although China is also developing pulse-Doppler airborne radar, there is no technical reference available, making independent development extremely difficult. Moreover, there are some things that Qin Liang has not yet explored, such as head-up displays (HUDs). Modern fighter jets cannot do without them, as most important data is displayed on the HUD, especially the cannon hotspot. With it, pilots do not have to look down at hundreds of instruments during intense air combat!
Back then, when Tu Lao and his team discussed the introduction of avionics with Marconi, the focus was on the head-up display (HUD). Although it was later installed on the aircraft, veteran pilots still found it cumbersome and often turned it off, but new pilots praised it highly.
Trading the processing of a single planar slot antenna for Marconi's complete avionics technology is definitely a worthwhile deal!
Everyone was used to Qin Liang showing off his skills from time to time. Since Qin Liang said we could manufacture this high-end planar slotted antenna, then we really could!
"Hmph, you exchanged a mere processing technique for our entire avionics technology? You Easterners are really good at business!" A British man couldn't help but sneer, "Are you so poor?"
"Mr. Peterman, is this what you call respecting intellectual property rights? Forget it, pretend I didn't say anything!" Qin Liang waved his hand: "You people, the British Empire has long since perished, but deep down you still have that old arrogance..."
The Englishman's face turned pale. "You..."
"What do you mean, 'you'? Gentlemen, we are the client! We came to England to inspect airborne equipment, and this is how you treat your clients?" Qin Liang rolled his eyes at them. "In that case, there's no need for us to talk anymore, General Sabir, General Sabir!"
Sabil looked resentful. "You finally remembered me? You finally remembered we came here to inspect airborne equipment?"
"Let's go!"
Qin Liang's words left Sabir speechless once again. Leaving? Just like that? The formalities haven't even been discussed yet!
“Mr. Qin, I have a proposal,” Peterman began. “Since you possess this technology, could you use our equipment here to manufacture one according to our blueprints? Rest assured, our facility has no surveillance equipment, and your manufacturing process will not be leaked. If you can produce a qualified product, then we can discuss the purchase of this technology. What do you say?”
"Them? They want on-site processing? Are you kidding me!" Janice said with a look of disdain.
"Alright, since that's the case, let's show you what we've got and let you know that there are always people better than you, and just because you can't do it doesn't mean others can't!"
Marconi Company, Research and Development Building, a laboratory.
Qin Liang took the metal detector and examined the entire laboratory. In fact, there were no pinhole cameras in this era. The recording device was the same size as the cameras next to traffic lights in later generations, and it was impossible to hide it. As for eavesdropping... without watching the operation, just listening to the voice was useless.
"Alright, this is it. From now on, no one is allowed to approach us. Just leave the food at the door every day." Qin Liang stood at the door and said to the British men who were staring expectantly inside, then looked at Tu Lao and the others: "Gentlemen, you've worked hard these past few days to negotiate the avionics technology we need!"
"It's not hard work, it's not hard work," Old Tu waved his hand repeatedly.
In the capitalist world, what doesn't cost money? A single broken Spey engine cost a fortune! Now, Qin Liang only needs to demonstrate his skills to bring back all the technology his side wants—it's an absolute bargain!
We need to negotiate properly and secure everything that the Super-7 needs so that we can produce it ourselves and solve major problems for the Eastern Air Force!
The British haven't agreed to a technology-for-technology exchange yet? Haha, once the antenna is ready, the British will agree to any conditions; this is exactly what they desperately need!
"How long will it take you to finish?" Peterman asked.
Qin Liang held up three fingers: "Three days!"
What a load of bull! We've been developing this for three years already and still haven't figured it out. And you think you can manufacture it in three days? Janice is already waiting to see the Asians make a fool of themselves in three days!
