Chapter 321 One word becomes a prophecy
Chapter 321 A Prophecy Come True
The author is just an ordinary person, penniless, and has to pay taxes on his meager earnings. Please don't guess anymore, Orz—
Night fell over the coastline of Monaco.
The road was straight, and the asphalt was damp.
The air conditioning inside the car was running smoothly.
Kate leaned back in the passenger seat, gazing at the scenery outside the window.
Cliffs, palm trees, fences in mansion courtyards, and dappled lights reflected on the sea.
Occasionally a breeze blows, creating ripples that resemble shattered gold.
She raised her hand and tucked a stray hair behind her ear.
The daytime banquet had left me exhausted, yet now I felt inexplicably energetic.
Andrew gripped the steering wheel with one hand, humming a broken melody.
The suit jacket was casually tossed on the back seat, leaving only the shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the forearms.
“It’s a strange place,” Kate said softly.
Andrew tilted his head: "What's strange?"
“It’s so clean.” She paused, “like a piece of glass that’s been wiped clean.”
Andrew laughed.
"This is Monaco, baby."
"The richest people in the world live here, and they don't allow dirt to remain."
“Then what are we?” Kate looked away. “Travelers? Guests?”
“Of course they’re guests,” Andrew said lightly.
"Enjoy a few days, leave the bills, and then go back to the US."
However, Kate didn't feel as relaxed as her boyfriend did at that moment.
She gazed again at the shadows of the distant mountains, remained silent for a long time, and then asked in a low voice:
"So what do you plan to do after you get back?"
"What do you mean?"
"The case. That man."
Andrew tapped his knuckles lightly twice on the steering wheel.
“Kate, we came to Monaco to relax, not to—”
“But nothing that happened in court has changed, Andrew.”
Kate couldn't help but interrupt him.
"Those things... I don't know what they are, they're still there."
"No matter how unpleasant it may be."
Andrew narrowed his right eye. "Stop talking."
"You're scared too, aren't you?"
"Fear?"
"What's there to be afraid of? A veteran? He might not even be able to afford a plane ticket in America."
"Stop fooling yourself," Kate said in a low voice, her tone becoming increasingly urgent.
“You know what kind of person he is; you know him better than I do.”
"That night in court, the FBI agents came out in person. Didn't you see what they looked like?"
“They don’t want the truth to be told; they want to protect him.”
Andrew turned his head sharply, his back tense:
"How many times are you going to say it? This is a court hearing, it's procedure!"
"National security, CIPA, confidentiality clauses. This is how the system works."
After he finished speaking, the carriage fell into dead silence.
The silence continued for several hundred meters until the car headlights swept past a patch of bushes.
Kate spoke calmly:
"The documents you showed me in the office that day were obtained for you by your uncle."
“Don’t drag him into this.” Andrew’s expression turned cold.
“But that’s the truth,” Kate said, emphasizing each word.
“You used your connections to drag me into this and make me testify in court.”
Upon hearing this, Andrew couldn't help but shake his head with a cold laugh.
"Should I drag you in?"
“Don’t forget, Kate, you’re a detective.”
“You arrested him yourself; you’re the one who put his name on the report.”
Kate's breath hitched.
“When that day ended, you left me in court and walked away. I went to see him.”
"Do you know what he told me, Andrew? Do you know?"
“He said I would die, and I should leave here forever.”
Andrew had lost interest in arguing with her any longer.
His lips were pressed tightly together, and after a long pause, he managed to utter only one sentence: "You've gone mad, Kate."
"Perhaps we should reconsider this relationship."
These words were like cold water poured onto hot oil, causing Kate's pupils to suddenly contract.
“Am I crazy?!” she shrieked.
"If I've gone mad, it's because of you."
"It was you who pushed me to the forefront for your damned political ambitions!"
"Your ridiculous ideals, your hypocritical ambitions!"
"If you're really as tough as you say, then why did you shut up in court? Why did you bow down before the federal government?! Why didn't your so-called uncle, your powerful father, stand up for you?"
Upon hearing this, Andrew's suppressed anger was completely ignited.
He slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching against the asphalt.
The sports car was parked sideways in the middle.
“How much money have I spent on you, Kate Rivers? Huh?!”
"Airfare, hotel, dress—I'll cover all your fucking expenses!"
"what about you?"
"Instead of being grateful, you torment me time and time again with your paranoid and insane words!"
"Look around! This is Monaco!"
Andrew suddenly raised his hand and pointed out the window.
"Casinos, rich people, bodyguards, surveillance cameras everywhere! Nobody here, nobody wants them—"
Before he could finish speaking, a dazzling white light suddenly burst in from the fork in the road.
Almost simultaneously, the massive steel vehicle hurtled towards them at full speed.
The sound was swallowed up in an instant.
Metal tore apart, glass shattered, and the airbags inflated with a bang.
Andrew's chest was pressed tightly against something, his breathing stopped, and his vision began to blur.
He turned his head instinctively.
Kate's body was trapped between the seat and the car door.
Flesh and white bone fragments mingled and clung to the torn leather seat.
His arm was broken, his eyes were half-open and half-closed, and blood and foam were oozing from the corner of his lips.
Andrew tried to reach for it, but the seatbelt held him firmly in place.
The smoke choked him, causing tears and snot to stream down his face.
Time seemed to stand still.
All he remembered was that his hands were covered in blood, warm blood, thick blood.
How can one person bleed so much?
It dripped down my face, neck, and inside my collar.
“Kate—”
Andrew managed to squeeze out two words, so faint that he couldn't even hear them himself.
After an unknown amount of time, someone was shouting outside the car.
The speech was a mix of French and English, delivered in a rapid tone.
The lights flashed randomly, red and blue, intertwining into chaotic blocks of color.
Someone is smashing the car door.
Someone was pulling on his shoulder.
Someone was shouting, "Don't move! Don't move!"
The next second, a crowbar was inserted, the iron door was cut open, and sparks flew.
Kate's body was carried out, her head limply lolling to one side on the stretcher.
Andrew lunged forward, but was forcefully held down by several hands.
He seemed to be shouting desperately, but no one paid any attention to him.
The ambulance door slammed shut.
The hospital corridor was filled with the smell of disinfectant.
Andrew sat numbly on the plastic chair, his shirt soaked in blood, wet and dry repeatedly.
His hands were still trembling, and his palms were covered with solidified marks that he couldn't rub off no matter how hard he tried.
Someone is talking.
Nurse, doctor, police officer, official.
Andrew, however, couldn't hear a word of it; his mind was buzzing.
Someone was gently comforting him.
Someone handed me a tissue.
Someone asked him to sign something, without even knowing what was written on the paper.
