Chapter 310 Crazy
Chapter 310 Crazy
Santa Rita Prison.
The iron gate closed, the echo muffled.
The air in the visiting room was filled with the strong smell of disinfectant.
Zhou Yi sat in the center, his movements restricted by a waist chain, handcuffs, and leg irons.
Two strangers sat down opposite them.
The first to speak was a middle-aged man with graying temples and a weary expression.
"Wilson, head of the FBI's counterintelligence division."
He introduced himself, placed the documents on the table, and gently pressed the cover with his palm.
"Next to me is Daniel, from the Department of Justice, an assistant legal counsel."
"We only have one question today."
"John Hernandez Garcia, what are you doing at the crime scene?"
Zhou Yi didn't answer; instead, he shrugged.
"You arrived earlier than I expected."
"I must say, they are very vigilant, which is admirable."
Wilson's expression remained unchanged as he calmly continued to press for answers:
“You had contact with Zhao Wanpeng on the night of the incident.”
"Please explain what kind of 'contact' this was?"
Zhou Yi blinked, as if he were really recalling something.
"It was just a friendly visit," he said casually.
“He’s here, along with other friends from the nursing home.”
"A lively night, but unfortunately, the ending wasn't good."
Daniel finally managed to interject at this moment.
"You mean you deny any direct conflict with those who died?"
"Conflict?" Zhou Yi shook his head slightly.
"The truth cannot be defined by a few pretty words."
Upon hearing this, Wilson couldn't help but cough twice.
“Mr. Garcia, we are here to help you solve your problem.”
"You don't need to play word games with us."
Zhou Yi struggled to raise his hands, which were bound by iron chains, and tapped his knuckles on the table.
"Is this the problem you're referring to? Or is it something else?"
"For example, would you rather let old debts rot in the filing cabinet?"
The room fell into a deathly silence.
Only the low hum of the central air conditioning remained.
Wilson stared intently into Zhou Yi's eyes, then leaned back in his chair after a long while.
“Very good,” he said in a deep voice.
"Let's abandon the pointless pleasantries and treat today as a transaction."
"This case will be concluded before sunset today, and you will be acquitted."
"In exchange, you must remain silent and stop chasing after so-called 'truth'."
The atmosphere became tense instantly.
Zhou Yi lowered his head, his expression dark as he examined the handcuffs on his wrists.
After a moment, he looked up and asked, "You know a lot about my mother's death?"
Wilson's brow twitched involuntarily.
After a few seconds of silence, he finally shook his head and said, "I don't have the authority to know."
"But again, that's not something you should know."
"You have to remember this."
He paused again, as if carefully considering what to add:
"Stop your curiosity, John, just like you used to be."
Daniel looked at the two people posing a riddle with a puzzled expression, and was about to speak—
"And what about the district attorney?"
Zhou Yi abruptly changed the subject.
"He seemed to have high hopes for the case."
"Do I need to remind you, is the child's last name 'Calhoun'?"
“You don’t need to think about these things, John.”
Wilson stood up without changing his expression, then gestured for Daniel to follow him.
Just as he was about to leave, he stopped pushing the door open, turned back, and said:
"Remember our agreement."
Goodbye, and I hope we never have to meet again.
The iron gate closed.
The two went away.
Jim stood there, glancing instinctively at the lawyer in the tattered suit beside him.
"Do you know them?"
The man was startled and quickly shook his head.
"I don't know him."
"That's good." Jim smiled and patted him on the shoulder. "I thought we were late and someone beat us to it." "Come on, take me, your new paralegal, to meet your client."
With CO's help, the door was reopened.
Zhou Yi was clearly taken aback when he saw the newcomer, and a look of surprise flashed in his eyes.
Jim didn't dare to say anything and first checked the camera.
The red dot went out.
The machine remained motionless.
"Relax," Zhou Yi said.
"They just shut that thing down, you've come at the perfect time."
Jim wasn't surprised and gestured to the lawyer next to him to cover his ears.
The lawyer hesitated slightly, then turned to face the wall, skillfully making room for the conversation.
"Your movements are quite skilled," Zhou Yi commented. "Where did you find that person?"
Jim ignored his teasing and simply bent down to get closer: "There's something going on."
"Did something go wrong with the mission?" Zhou Yi asked.
"Yes and no."
“He sent another message at 3 p.m. yesterday.”
Jim's expression was somewhat strange.
"Do you know who he wants us to deal with?"
"More than a dozen targets are still on Capitol Hill."
Zhou Yi looked as if he had choked.
"Is he planning a coup?" he asked incredulously.
“I’d rather believe he’s insane,” Jim sneered.
"Because you guess how much the budget is for this order?"
"How many?"
"one million."
"The same as how we handle Mexican quotes."
Zhou Yi opened his mouth in bewilderment, unsure of how to react for a moment.
It took him a long time to find his voice.
"Do I need to discuss this with you?"
"Just reject him directly. What are you waiting for?"
Upon hearing this, Jim helplessly spread his hands.
“I refused, and he immediately changed his mind and said to find another target.”
"one person."
"Who?"
“Delaware Senator Bruce Harrison, Democrat.”
"The price has been changed to 300,000."
Zhou Yi nodded. "That's reasonable. You're not planning to accept?"
Jim's lips twitched, as if he was suppressing nausea, and he quickly waved his hand.
"I swore I would never go to Washington, D.C."
"Last time in Arlington was enough."
"If it weren't for that person, I wouldn't even have gone near him."
As he said this, his tone became somewhat tentative.
"So I was wondering if you'd be willing to take it on?"
"Just consider it for my good reputation online."
"Of course, we need to get out of this awful place as soon as possible; they're urging us to leave quickly."
"Does he have any other requests?" Zhou Yi turned his head to look at the lawyer who was squatting on the ground.
"It would be best to have video, like in Mexico."
"Great, see you tomorrow."
Jim raised an eyebrow.
"So fast? Is it related to those two people from earlier?"
"The nursing home incident seems to be quite serious, involving a first-degree murder charge."
Zhou Yi sighed.
"Stop asking, Jim, please stop asking."
"Okay, you're always the most mysterious one."
Jim clicked his tongue and turned to walk towards the pretentious lawyer.
"Your mission is complete, Hyde Monroe."
He grabbed the man's arm and, with a little force, dragged him up from the ground.
The lawyer staggered two steps, almost falling, his face showing embarrassment but he dared not utter a word.
“Let’s go, sir, who earns $150 an hour.”
"Damn it, why didn't I think of going to law school back then?"
