Chapter 42 The Bandit Attack
Ten days later, Zhang Cunmeng led all the troops of the mountain stronghold, totaling more than 2,000 soldiers, plus more than 3,000 refugees, and marched in a grand procession to the foot of Yangta Mountain.

Seeing this, Lu Tao's face beamed with smiles, and he led his second-in-command, Zhao Yongxiang, to greet them.
"Boss Zhang, Brother Zhao, you truly keep your word! Please lend us your help this time!"

“I have ordered people to drive all the refugees within dozens of miles of Anse to Majia Village, and I also had Lao San lead two hundred elite soldiers to disguise themselves as starving people and mingle among them.”

Zhang Cunmeng and Zhao Sheng exchanged a glance and nodded:
“In that case, let’s set off. I suggest we split up our forces to avoid being discovered beforehand.”

"This time, we will all follow Chief Lu's command. As long as Chief Lu gives the order, our two families will charge together and we will definitely be able to take down Jiang Han in one fell swoop!"

Lu Tao, without suspicion, nodded:

"No problem, I've already made an agreement with Lao San. We'll use the sound of cannons as a signal. As soon as the cannons go off, we'll take advantage of the chaos and storm into Majia Village!"

"Kill him to pieces without leaving any trace behind!"

Meanwhile, the situation in Majia Village was quite different.

Li Laowai was currently hiding in a ditch behind the village, acting as a lookout. His face was full of displeasure, and he was cursing under his breath.

A few days ago, he lost a training match and was punished by Jiang Han to carry manure and water. Not only that, he was also stuffed into this stinky ditch to serve as a sentry for a few days.

He felt it was very unfair; all his skills were killing techniques, and he couldn't use them effectively when practicing with his own people.

Shaking off the yellow dust, Li Laowai climbed out of the ditch and walked towards the tallest tiled house at the village entrance, where his team leader, Hu Yongsheng, was on the roof acting as a lookout.

Hu Yongsheng was lying listlessly on the roof of the tiled house, yawning as he looked at the empty loess slope. He didn't even notice Li Laowai climbing up.

"You son of a bitch, you dare to be distracted while on guard duty! Believe me or not, I'll beat you to death!"

Li Laowai roared, startling Hu Yongsheng so much that he almost rolled off the roof. He angrily picked up the knife beside him and was about to settle scores with the people behind him.

But when Hu Yongsheng turned around, his expression immediately changed, becoming all fawning: "Squad leader, what brings you here?"

Li Laowai raised his leg and kicked:
"You bastard, I'm crawling around in the gutter eating dirt, and you're dozing off on the roof?"

Hu Yongsheng rubbed his buttocks, looking miserable.

"Squad leader, is there anyone else here besides us? All we can see are yellow earthen slopes, it's making our eyes dizzy."

Li Laowai didn't care; the sentry post was crucial, and he looked serious.
"I'm warning you, Lord Jiang is cracking down on military discipline. Even I've been punished, so you better watch out! Get back to work and don't get distracted!"

Hu Yongsheng was about to nod when he suddenly widened his eyes, pointed behind Li Laowai, and stammered:
"They're all people!"

Li Laowai was somewhat surprised. He glanced back and that glance made him freeze in place.

The once deserted passageway was now filled with countless heads.

The refugees came like a tidal wave, densely packed and blocking out the sun.

"Damn, what's going on!" Hu Yongsheng swallowed hard; he had never seen so many refugees before.

Li Laowai suddenly jumped up and shouted:

"Go quickly! Go and report to Lord Jiang!"

"I'll take some men and stop them!"

Having said that, he took out a horn from his waist and blew out two short and one long rapid sounds, which was the signal for assembly.

"Woo——"

The dull horn sound instantly echoed throughout the village.

Upon hearing the sound, the soldiers patrolling the fields and villages immediately dropped what they were doing and ran towards the village entrance.

Hu Yongsheng, on the other hand, took three steps at a time, leaped off the roof, and ran towards Baijia Village.

Jiang Han was training his troops on the threshing ground. At that moment, Hei Zi and Dong Erzhu were each leading a team in a sparring match, their punches landing hard and their shouts deafening.

"Zhu Zi, beat him up! Why are you beating him up like a woman? Didn't I feed you?" Jiang Han yelled at the top of his lungs.

Hei Zi kicked the pillar in the lower body, causing the pillar to stumble and nearly fall.

"Hey, you son of a bitch, do you think that's a place where you can kill someone? Zhu Zi isn't even married yet!"

Watching from the side, Shao Yong was terrified and whispered a word of advice:
"Lord Jiang, isn't this training too harsh? One wrong move and you might be left childless." Jiang Han waved his hand.

"It's alright, it's just practice. Getting injured now is better than losing your life later."

"You should also get ready. When Li Laowai comes back, it will be your turn to spar with him."

Before he could finish speaking, sentry Hu Yongsheng came running over, panting:

"Lord Jiang! Something terrible has happened! A large number of refugees have appeared at the village entrance and are rushing in!"

"The sergeant is leading his men to hold the village entrance!"

Upon hearing this, Jiang Han's face darkened, and he immediately gave an order to the training troops:

"gather!"

At a command, everyone quickly formed ranks.

Hei Zi led the infantry forward, Dong Erzhu ran to drag the tiger-squatting cannon out of the barracks, and Shao Yong followed closely behind with the cavalry.

The group, in a grand procession, headed towards the village entrance.

At this moment, at the village entrance, Li Laowai was leading a team of fifty people, blocking the surging refugees.

But as time went on, he soon found himself unable to stop them, as there were simply too many people in front of him.

When people are extremely hungry, they lose all sense of life and death and only want to have a full meal.

"Sir, please have mercy and let us in to find something to eat!" someone pleaded on his knees.

Li Laowai remained unmoved, with a row of long spears behind him firmly blocking the village entrance, preventing the group of refugees from advancing an inch.

Among the crowd, Yangtashan's third leader, who had been lying in wait for a long time, could no longer contain himself and suddenly roared:

"There's grain inside; they're growing grain!"

"Charge in! If we charge in, we'll have a full meal!"

These words were like a spark falling into a frying pan; the group of refugees instantly erupted, and many rushed in with their eyes closed.

Starving people poured in from all directions, one after another.

As long as they can get a full meal, they'll brave any danger, even if it means facing mountains of knives and seas of fire.

Wave after wave of refugees emerged from every nook and cranny like locusts, rushing one after another towards the village before them.

The refugees in front were stabbed down by spears, their blood staining the yellow earth red, but those behind them continued to charge forward, stepping over the corpses of their companions.

Li Laowai led dozens of men, hacking and slashing left and right, but they couldn't scatter these starving refugees.

Meanwhile, the third leader of Yangtashan was also busy, hiding among the crowd and specifically guiding the refugees to attack their weakest points.

He was using the lives of refugees to exhaust the physical strength and energy of Li Laowai and others. Although it sounds cruel, that's how it was in northern Shaanxi.

Since the bandits couldn't defeat the government troops, they could only resort to using human lives as a shield, sending refugees to the front lines.

For the refugees to survive and get food, they had to rush in and survive.

Just as Li Laowai and the others were struggling to hold on, several cannon shots suddenly rang out behind them.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!"

With deafening cannon fire, several shells exploded not far away, instantly creating a gap in the crowded refugee crowd.

Jiang Han arrived with his team just in time, his gaze sharp as a knife as he swept over the chaotic crowd.

"Everyone obey orders!"

"Anyone who enters the village will be killed without mercy!"
