Chapter 207 Coffee is limited, but the phone keeps ringing.
The library was so quiet that even the air was still.
Besides a pencil case and books, there were two cups of coffee on the empty desk. The girl by the window looked towards the brown-red wooden door of the study room. Her special teacher was about to arrive.
Jun Matsueda pushed open the door of the study room and met Yamamimi Maki's eyes. The boy waved and the girl nodded.
He sat down on the chair opposite the girl, "Senior, you came earlier than I expected."
When Jun Matsueda parked his car downstairs, he deliberately looked at the time. There were still fifteen minutes until the agreed time of 1:00 p.m.
"Because I wanted to buy two cups of coffee." Yamami Moji shook the coffee in front of her. "That shop is usually quite crowded, but when I went there today, there weren't many people, so I came a little early."
Before Matsueda Jun could speak, the girl continued, "Matsueda-san, don't tell me you want to pay or bother me!"
Yamamiya Maki's expression was very serious, with a hint of cute persistence between her brows.
"I'm the one who bothered you with tutoring and made you take a long detour because of me. A cup of coffee shouldn't be a big deal, right?"
Actually, for both of them, the library at the Setagaya Literary Museum was the best place for tutoring, as they were both about the same distance away. However, studying together there risked being discovered by Tomatsu Tomoka, so they were now sitting in the study room of the Setagaya City Library.
Matsueda Jun could only sigh, "Senior always has a way of making people accept your kindness."
The girl looked at him and picked up the coffee, smiling.
"How about it?"
"Rich aroma, smooth taste." He put down the cup, "Reminds me of the iced latte my senior class had during the cultural festival."
Yamami Maki raised her eyebrows in surprise, and her mouth opened a little wider, revealing a bit of her white teeth. "This coffee shop is owned by that classmate's family!"
"Matsueda-san has a really good memory."
Matsueda Jun unfolded the exercise book he brought with him and said, "I just remember what I drank."
The afternoon tutoring session began. Although it was called tutoring, it was actually no different from self-study. The two of them read and did exercises on their own. If there was something they didn't understand, they would write it down on paper or communicate quietly.
"Matsue, this is a multiple-choice question about the egg production process."
Yamami Maki leaned forward, and Matsueda Jun also leaned over to look at the questions she handed over. The girl's black hair hung down from her ears and spread out on the table, with a few strands pressed under his fingertips.
"Option A, huh?"
As Jun Matsueda read the questions, the sounds of writing and turning pages faded for a moment, leaving the silence so quiet that one could almost hear breathing from the other side. The girl remained in her position, the faint scent of camellia wafting over. It felt as if they were no longer in a city library, but in a winter forest.
Camellias typically bloom from October to April of the following year. Jun Matsue put down his exam paper, trying to distract himself from his illusions with aimless thinking. Maki Yami was still staring at him, as if she could see through his problem-solving process.
"Choice A is incorrect because it implies that fertilization occurs in the ovary, when it actually occurs in the fallopian tube."
"What about option D?" The girl looked into his eyes.
When Jun Matsueda picked up the test paper again, his cell phone on the table vibrated and the still air began to move.
"Sorry, Senior, I have to take a call."
"It's okay, the phone call is important. I'll just look at the questions at the back first." Yamami Moki smiled.
Ten minutes later, Jun Matsueda returned to the room and saw the girl drinking coffee, with most of the liquid in the cup gone.
Noticing his gaze, Yamami Maki put down her cup, and the half-melted ice inside swayed slightly. "I can't help feeling sleepy after eating, so I have to drink more coffee to wake me up."
"I do that sometimes too." Matsueda Jun sat down. "It was Aya-chan who called just now. She was a little nervous and asked about the interview."
Before he left, the girl's coffee was still full. "Matsueda-san, you're a volunteer, right? I saw your application form." Yami Maki was a student council officer in charge of reviewing the volunteers for this interview. "If Aya-chan sees you then, she probably won't be so nervous."
"Hmm." Matsueda Jun nodded. "I was planning to give her a surprise, but now I have no choice but to tell her in advance."
The two solved the question about the egg production process. When the girl handed over a new test paper, Matsueda Jun's phone rang again. He took a look at the number ending with 0110. It was the police's phone number.
He quickly covered the phone and gave Yamami Moki an apologetic look, "Sorry, senpai."
"It's okay~" As soon as Jun Matsueda stood up from his seat, the girl brought him the coffee.
Twenty minutes later, he returned to his seat. "The district office called. It was about investigating my living situation. It took a little longer."
Jun Matsueda lied. In fact, the call was from the police station. He didn't intend to let the senior know about the response to the previous call to the police, as this would only make her worry.
"I see!" Yamami Moki nodded with a smile. The coffee cup in front of her was empty, with only brown ice cubes left.
"I should have eaten less for lunch. I tend to get sleepy when I'm alone," the girl lamented, feeling a bit distressed that she hadn't taken a nap.
Before Jun Matsueda sat down, Yamami Maki stood up and walked over to Jun Matsueda to talk. There were other people studying around them.
"Matsueda-san, how about we go out for a walk?"
She whispered softly into his ear.
A damp and cold wind blew in her face. The girl, who was not wearing a scarf, shook her head and stamped her feet. The hem of her dark green woolen skirt was lifted up, revealing a pair of straight white calves.
"Oh my—I feel refreshed. The heating in the library is a little too strong~"
By mid-February, the pervasive cold outside has begun to dissipate. Due to the influence of the cold wave, they seem reluctant to leave the city and are still wandering in the streets.
"The nearby Hanegi Park is holding its plum blossom festival today. Would you like to take a look, Matsueda?"
"Then please lead the way, senior." Matsueda Jun still had the unfinished coffee in her hand, and the girl smiled embarrassedly.
The weather was not good, and it was drizzling when they arrived at the park. They hid under the plum tree and looked at the sea of white, pink and red around them.
There are 650 plum trees in Hanegi Park, 270 red plum trees, and 380 white plum trees. The red and white plum blossoms sway in the drizzle, and their branches touch each other as if kissing.
"The plum blossoms look so shy on a rainy day." Yamamiya Maki raised her head and looked at the white plum blossoms in front of her, which were tinged with a very light pink. Water droplets gathered on the petals, giving people a delicate feeling.
Jun Matsueda stood beside her, some distance between them, and the color of the grass under their feet was similar to the hem of the girl's skirt.
"Whenever weather like this hits, it seems everyone becomes listless."
The girl laughed. She suddenly remembered something and turned to ask the boy next to her, "Matsueda-san suddenly canceled the last tutoring session. Is there something wrong?"
Although Yamamami Maki's personality meant that she would not normally ask questions involving privacy, she couldn't help but feel curious when she saw Matsueda breaking the contract for the first time.
"I had to see Tomatsu for something that day, so I had to cancel the tutoring session. Sorry."
"There's no need to apologize, Matsueda-san!" The senior glared at him, pretending not to notice the change in the way Matsueda Jun addressed her.
Ever since she agreed to be friends with Jun Matsueda, she rarely mentioned her juniors in front of them, just like when she was facing Tomatsu Tomoka, she would not take the initiative to talk about Matsueda.
No matter who she talked to about the other person, Yamami Moki would always feel betrayed.
The wind and rain around them grew stronger, trapping them under a tree. No one else could be seen in the park, as if the only two people left in the world were the two of them in the sea of flowers.
So what happened between Matsue and Yuuka that day?
The girl gazed at the branches stretching toward the sky, quietly speculating to herself.
