Chapter 157 At the End of the World Lies a Light Heart
"The subsequent arrangements for the original school trip have to be temporarily cancelled."
After lunch, Mr. Kominato announced the depressing news in the hall.
"But we can't go back to school now. Public transportation hasn't resumed yet. Everyone can only move around in downtown Otaru. Everyone should conserve their phone battery and absolutely don't run around."
"I know—" the students responded lazily at the door. They brought chairs from indoors and sat at the door to bask in the sun, like a group of wild cats running out of the mountains.
Matsueda Jun said to the girl walking behind him, "If you haven't gotten enough sleep, you can go back to the hotel and sleep."
Mochizuki Haruka shook her head. "I've slept enough this morning. Where are you going?"
"Go see if the bookstore is still open, buy a book, and then find a nice place to while away the afternoon."
Jun Matsueda didn't want to sunbathe in front of the hotel with other people, as that would make him feel like he was already in his seventies or eighties.
Tomatsu Touka was taken to the clinic next door by Kominato Shoko because of bruises. The teacher was afraid that she might have any joint problems or hidden injuries.
Natsumi Imokawa, who was carrying a camera, became the center of attention among the girls. Everyone kept pestering her to take pictures, and the girl, unable to refuse, had to take out the spare batteries.
The two-person exploration team led by Jun Matsueda walked into the bookstore, and many people could be seen in the deep bookshelves.
After the loss of electricity, human entertainment activities began to become retro again, and citizens went into bookstores again to pick up paper books.
The girl behind the counter greeted them warmly, "Which high school are you from? Yingyang, Chaoling, or Mingfeng? We have all the textbooks~"
Jun Matsueda shook his head and walked towards the nearby bookshelf.
"Eh? None of them?" The girl walked out of the counter and looked at the two of them closely. "Then the only one left is Shuichan Gao. If there was such a good-looking person in our school, there's no way I wouldn't have remembered him!"
Wangyue Yao looked down at the girl's thighs. They were white and straight, with a bit of plump flesh. Most importantly, in such cold weather, the girl was not wearing anything on her legs.
"We are not locals. We are here in Hokkaido for a school trip." Jun Matsueda took a book titled "The End of the World and Hard-Boiled Wonderland" from the bookshelf, feeling that the title was quite suitable for Hokkaido.
"Hey, which school is this?" The girl came closer to Matsueda Jun, completely unaware of Mochizuki Haruka's dissatisfied gaze.
"Tokyo."
"So you're from Tokyo!" The girl's eyes lit up. "I heard that girls in Tokyo wear full makeup to school every day. Is that true?"
Matsueda Jun glanced at Yue Yao and shook her head.
"Then I heard that you often run into reporters interviewing you on the streets of Tokyo?"
Matsueda Jun nodded. "Indeed, I have encountered this before. It was from TV Tokyo and NHK."
The girl's bright eyes began to twinkle again. "That's great! I really want to study in Tokyo. I want to dress up beautifully and stand in front of the TV camera every day!"
"Even our high school's name is awful, like Fisheries High School. I don't even want to say it out loud."
"Then go apply to a university in Tokyo and become a shining Tokyo beauty." Matsueda Jun smiled and handed her the book in his hand.
The girl skipped back to the counter and paid for Jun Matsueda. "Wouldn't this super cute girl like to buy something?"
Haruka Mochizuki walked to the children's book section, found "The Little Prince", handed it to Jun Matsueda, and turned to leave the bookstore.
It took a while for Matsueda Jun to walk out of the door. Mochizuki Haruka turned around and asked him, "Why did you stay so long?"
"I asked her if there was anywhere nearby where I could spend the afternoon."
"Then where are we going now?"
"seaside."
Jun Matsueda and Haruka Mochizuki sat together on the shore where the tide was rising and falling, with the sand under their feet and the snow behind them.
"The wind is a bit strong." Jun Matsueda looked at the deep blue sea in front of him. The white waves made it difficult to distinguish between snow and sea.
Mochizuki Haruka stood up, took off the white scarf around her neck, walked behind Matsueda Jun and tied it around his neck.
"Then what are you going to do?" Jun Matsueda, who was lying on a beach chair, looked up at her.
Even from this unconventional angle, Mochizuki Haruka's face remained flawless, making one want to plunge into the icy seawater to suppress their restless youthful heart. The girl tilted her head and thought for a moment, then moved her chair closer to Matsueda Jun. She first tied one end of her scarf around Matsueda Jun's neck, then sat down with the other end and tied it around her own neck.
Luckily the scarf was long enough.
Jun Matsueda opened the book in his hand and saw this written on the first page.
Why does the sun still shine so golden?
Why do the birds keep singing?
Don't they know?
The world has come to an end.
Jun Matsueda looked up at the clear sun in the sky, and then looked at the seagulls circling low in the sky.
"It turns out we have reached the end of the world."
The scarf around his neck moved, and Mochizuki Yao turned her head and looked at the man who was speaking incomprehensibly.
The idle afternoon officially began.
The girl closed her eyes and listened to the sound of the waves. Every time Jun Matsueda turned a page of the book, the scarf connecting the two of them would tremble slightly.
The tide gradually moved away from the two of them, and after three o'clock, it quietly approached the shore.
Mochizuki Haruka woke up from a cradle-like light dream. She didn't know when she changed her posture, and in front of her was the profile of Matsueda Jun.
Matsueda Jun was reading a book with his head down. There was a slight shadow on his face and he took a long time to blink. Every time he blinked, Mochizuki Haruka's heart would beat.
Looking at the boy in front of her, the girl began to believe that this was the end of the world and that there were only the two of them left in the world.
"Pine branches." Wangyue Yao called him.
"Hmm?" Jun Matsueda looked up at her, and the statue-like beauty was broken by the girl's own hands.
"Where were you reading last time?" Mochizuki Yao picked up her book.
"The ninth period, I think." He recalled.
She turned to the corresponding page, which contained the rose's farewell to the little prince.
"Goodbye!" the little prince said to the flower.
But the flower did not answer him.
"Goodbye!" he said again.
After reading a few sentences, Wang Yueyao's eyes were stung by the sea breeze. The girl hurriedly turned over the tear-stained pages and closed the book.
She couldn't imagine how Jun Matsueda said goodbye to her.
"Songzhi, when are we leaving?" She tugged at her scarf.
"Feeling cold?" Matsueda Jun put down the book in his hand, took off his scarf, and wrapped it around the girl's neck a few more times. "Let's go."
Mochizuki Haruka stood up and followed him out of the beach. The two crossed the railway tracks of the Hakodate Main Line. Now that there was no electricity, the traffic lights and trains would not appear.
The sea water and the snow line met together, and a few seagulls landed on the beach chairs that were left there, watching the backs of the two people go away.
The cold winter wind was blowing through the town. Mochizuki Haruka was walking on the road holding a book. Half of the girl's face was covered by a piled scarf. She glanced at Matsueda Jun out of the corner of her eye. Her shy look made the houses on the roadside that were strong enough to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake so soft that they kept shaking.
The girl's heart began to beat lively again, just like it did last night before going to bed and at the beach.
This heart had once been so heavy and so dark, but at this moment, it had become as light as a bird, enough for her to stand on the street by the sea and boldly gaze at eternity.
Let's stick to updating twice a day; that way the data will be better.
