Chapter 105 The Ancestral Master Cracks

The moon is bright and the stars are few. In Liujia Town, the reception hall and main hall of the mortuary are located.

Lin Jiu, dressed in a yellow Taoist robe, sat in the central seat, looking at his fellow disciples, all dressed in yellow robes, on either side of the reception hall. He solemnly said, "The other day, on the fifteenth of the seventh month, the gates of hell opened wide, and a hundred ghosts watched the spectacle. My disciple and I carelessly allowed a hundred ghosts to escape, causing a nighttime parade of ghosts. So many ghosts have escaped; it's not something I could have done alone. Therefore, I urgently invite all of you fellow disciples to discuss a strategy to subdue them, otherwise things will get complicated."

One of the junior disciples said, "This is a very important matter. Let's wait for Uncle Jian to arrive before we discuss it."

Qiu Shengwen said unhappily, "So many people are waiting for him, who does he think he is?"

With so many fellow disciples present, Lin Jiu couldn't bear to see his disciple being so rude. He gently reprimanded him, but before he could finish speaking, two people entered from outside.

The person walking in front had gray hair, long eyebrows and a long beard, and piercing eyes. He wore a black and white Tai Chi Yin-Yang robe and walked with a brisk pace. The moment he appeared, all the Maoshan disciples present stood up and bowed: "Senior Brother, you've arrived..."

He is Shi Jian, the current senior disciple of Maoshan Sect, who is hailed as having the strongest talent and the most promising chance of becoming the next leader of Maoshan Sect.

The young man in the yellow robe standing next to Shi Jian had slicked-back hair and a powdered face. He neither wore a topknot nor had a beard. Instead, his hairstyle was extremely fashionable, with half of his bangs covering his eyes. He was Shi Jian's apprentice, Shi Shaojian.

Shi Jian nodded to his fellow disciples.

He fixed his gaze on Lin Jiu and asked, "Who started this?"

Lin Jiu, realizing he was in the wrong, stood up to offer his seat, saying, "They are my two good-for-nothing disciples..."

Shi Jian sat down in the main seat and chuckled, "What do you mean by 'incompetent'?"

The apprentice chimed in from the side, "He's just stupid, dumb, even dull."

These words infuriated Qiu Shengwencai. If Lin Jiu hadn't stopped him, he would have wanted to go up and fight Shi Shaojian one-on-one...

Lin Jiu just wanted to suppress the matter as soon as possible, and said, "It was my disciple's carelessness..."

Upon hearing the word "careless," Shi Jian immediately became displeased and stared directly at Lin Jiu, saying, "You've failed in your duties! How can you excuse yourself with just two words like 'careless' when such a serious matter has occurred? Tell me honestly, did you invite me here to help you shoulder this burden?"

Lin Jiu, his mouth dry, said, "We've agreed to use the Innate Eight Trigrams Formation to capture these ghosts."

Shi Jian, as the senior disciple, wasn't going to put up with Lin Jiu's feelings. He glanced at his junior brothers and said, "Since you've all made up your minds, why did you invite me here?"

Lin Jiu felt utterly humiliated, as if he had been publicly trampled upon. His heart was bitter, but his face remained respectful: "What brilliant idea does Senior Brother have?"

Shi Jian pondered for a moment and said, "The Primordial Eight Trigrams Formation, then let's go with the Primordial Eight Trigrams Formation!"

Lin Jiu: "..."

The other Maoshan disciples saw this and thought to themselves, "Although our eldest brother is exceptionally talented and decisive, he has spent a long time cultivating on Maoshan and has too little experience with worldly affairs. He is far less worldly and sophisticated than Lin Fengjiao."

The discussion was nearing its end.

Shi Jian ordered someone to lure out the ghost, and his apprentice tried to show off, but was glared at by Shi Jian and shut up...

He put Lin Jiu in a dilemma by saying, "It would be best if one person could do the work and take the blame." Even though he was worried about his disciple's safety, he had no choice but to agree.

The matter was settled.

Lin Jiu was physically and mentally exhausted; too many things had happened in the past few days.

He reminisced about the days when he came down from Maoshan, experienced the world, and pursued the highest realm of Taoism. Now, however, he was living in a daze every day, no longer possessing the lofty ambitions of his youth.

A few days ago, I ran into the Fengdu Judge in Renjia Town, someone I haven't seen in years. Remembering Wencai and Qiusheng's personalities, I packed my things and ran to Liujia Town that day to avoid trouble. The new mortuary wasn't ready yet when I ran into Wencai, who had gone to see a ghost play on the fifteenth of July.

Fearing something might happen, he took Qiusheng to call for help. However, the two of them were bewitched by a female ghost with just a few words, and they couldn't even recognize the ghost messengers. They used talismans to restrain the ghost messengers, causing all the ghosts on the scene to flee in all directions!

Left with no other choice, Lin Jiu had to negotiate with the ghost messengers, offering them three days' grace with ghost money in exchange for the return of all the ghosts. Tonight was already the third day. Fortunately, many of his junior brothers had arrived with the help of paper messages; otherwise, he truly didn't know what he would have done alone…

After the matter was settled, the fellow disciples went up the mountain to set up the Innate Bagua Formation, while Qiu Sheng and Wen Cai pushed a cart of tender tofu to town to sell, hoping to attract the attention of ghosts.

Lin Jiu was the last to leave the mortuary. He lit several sticks of incense for the statue of the Ancestral Master: "Ancestral Master, please bless this trip to go smoothly. Qiu Sheng and Wen Cai are, after all, your grand-disciples. I hope nothing bad will happen to them."

Click...

Suddenly, a straight crack appeared on the statue of the patriarch, from the top of his head to the bottom, as if it had been cleaved in two by an invisible sword.

Lin Jiu felt a chill run through his body instantly. The statue of his ancestral master had cracked—a terrible omen!
Just as he was about to kneel and kowtow, a yellow paper crane fluttered its wings and flew in from outside the mortuary. It was a letter from his fellow disciples from Maoshan. He caught the paper crane, opened it, and saw the following text: [Message! Senior brother, the judge of Fengdu knows all the addresses on your register. Your junior brother, Four-Eyed Taoist!]

There weren't many words, but each one struck Lin Jiu like a thunderbolt.

So this is where our calamity began!

Lin Jiu felt dizzy and weak. He took a few steps back and leaned against a pillar in the mortuary to catch his breath.

He recalled Si Mu's respectful attitude towards him in the past, which suggested they were close fellow disciples. He figured Si Mu should understand Qiu Shengwencai's character, so why... why did he guide the Fengdu judge?

All fellow practitioners have a contact book in the world, which records the place and time of each stay. Unless you give it to us voluntarily, if it is stolen, we will burn the book ourselves!

Four eyes!

You...me...sigh!

The veins on Lin Jiu's forehead were bulging.

When encountering a crime, the judges of Fengdu first examine the "Shangqing Bone Marrow Spiritual Text Ghost Laws," which contains three categories: Ghost Laws, Jade Regulations, and Ritual Practices. The Ghost Laws are the most practical and deadly, containing seven gates and fifty-six articles of law: the Dharma Path Gate, the Taijia Gate, the Taiwu Gate, the Zhengyi Gate, the Gate of the Dead, the State Sacrifice Gate, and the Flying Recitation Gate! If the seven gates and fifty-six articles cannot examine the crime, then they ascend to the "Northern Yin Fengdu Taixuan Demon-Subduing Black Law Spiritual Book" to examine all kinds of crimes. If the sins are serious, they can directly kill the physical body and scatter the soul, saving them the trouble of going to Fengdu.

On the night of the Ghost Festival, when hundreds of ghosts were released, sixteen households in Liujia Town were brutally devoured by evil spirits, their flesh mangled and their souls nowhere to be found.

He went to the scene and saw it; it was simply unbearable to look at.

Although talismans were distributed to each household to ward off evil spirits, five families still suffered yesterday...

If the judge of Fengdu doesn't come, the ghost messengers will simply guide the souls to the underworld, perform a few simple maneuvers, and they'll be reincarnated, and then everything will be fine...

If the judges of Fengdu were to come, they could simply examine the "Shangqing Bone Marrow Spiritual Text Ghost Laws" and these ghosts would die without a burial place. The ghost messengers, for dereliction of duty, would be exiled at least six thousand miles to the underworld.

Those who cultivate the Tao will face the legal and spiritual punishments stipulated in the Shangqing Law. At best, they will be imprisoned for several or even ten years, or flogged one or two hundred times; at worst, they will have their lifespan cut off and be sent to hell.
