Chapter 69 Decline
Chapter 69 Decline (Please continue reading)
Nar stared solemnly at the endless stream of enormous tentacles shooting into the sky, a feeling of indescribable suffocation welling up inside him.
He then took a deep breath, formed a complex hand seal, and as the incantation was uttered, a thick, blood-red smoke billowed from the fire giant's body, quickly spreading outwards. The flames that had been burning everywhere dissipated into the horizon along with the red smoke formed by the fire element, dyeing half the sky a scarlet color.
After a dozen or so breaths, the red smoke in the sky dissipated, and the fire giant that had stood in the air had vanished without a trace.
Nar was left alone, gazing in the direction Markucht had disappeared, and sighed helplessly. With a flash, he transformed into a streak of light and landed beside the magic circle.
Angela was emitting only a faint green light, trembling incessantly, her face as pale as paper, clearly indicating that she had exhausted both her mental and magical power.
Nevertheless, the old druid gritted his teeth and struggled to maintain the situation, which was now largely unnecessary.
However, individual efforts could no longer change the outcome. The plants that had been successfully transformed into lush green around them were now slowly turning back to dark green, and even tiny black tentacles had quietly emerged from the ground, wriggling irregularly.
"Nal..."
Thank you so much for your hard work. I'm so sorry, it seems I've messed things up again...
Angela struggled to open her heavy eyelids. Her once bright and warm eyes were now bloodshot, revealing deep regret and undisguised exhaustion. In a hoarse and barely audible voice, she spoke slowly to Nar.
Nar quickly comforted him:
"Don't say that, Angela. Our original purpose for this trip was to determine whether Markucht had actually been resurrected."
Now it seems we've achieved our initial goal. As for other things... well, we'll talk about them later.
Okay, let's not think about that anymore. Let's go see what that damn guy has been up to..."
Upon hearing this, Angela stopped channeling her magic, as if all her strength had been drained, and she collapsed limply onto the magic circle. Nar quickly stepped forward and helped Angela up.
"Hey, old buddy, how are you feeling? Are you alright?"
Angela lay weakly in Nar's arms, gently waving her hand to indicate that she was alright.
"Don't worry, I'm fine. It's just a side effect of depleted magic power. I'll recover after a short rest."
Seeing his old friend's condition, Nar's ring flashed, and a bottle of potion emitting starlight appeared in his hand. He unscrewed the stopper and fed it to the old druid.
After a few minutes, Angela recovered slightly and slowly stood up with Nar's help.
Turning his head, he saw a huge black tentacle, over ten meters long, bursting out of the ground and shooting straight into the sky not far away. He couldn't help but sigh deeply, his expression full of worry and helplessness.
"Let's go~ Let's go to the Ancient Tree of Life, it's waiting for me."
Having said that, Angela dragged her slightly unsteady steps toward the wounded Earth Bear standing to the side. As the incantation was uttered, a massive magic circle appeared beneath the Earth Bear's body, flashing with light, and the colossal stone bear vanished from its spot. Nar gently patted his old friend's hunched shoulder, reached into the magic pouch hanging at his waist, rummaged around for a moment, and then took out a flying carpet. He placed a shimmering magic crystal on the magic rune array in the center of the carpet. Instantly, the magic power within the crystal was activated, rapidly flowing along the magic runes on the carpet.
As the magic surged, the intricate magical patterns on the carpet gradually shone with dazzling light. Then, the flying carpet began to tremble slightly and slowly floated up.
"Let's go~"
A dozen minutes later, the two arrived at the center of the island on the magic flying carpet. The towering mountain in the center of the island was now only half there. Several huge tentacles were stretching out from the broken part of the mountain, waving aimlessly towards the sky. The tentacles were covered with large and small fleshy tumors, constantly spraying out black liquid.
"Angela, what exactly is this thing?"
Nar frowned, pointing with disgust at the constantly waving tentacles, and asked:
"I'm not quite sure either."
Angel shook his head, his gaze fixed on the wildly waving tentacles as he spoke thoughtfully.
"However, it does look somewhat like a description of a monster I saw in an ancient book before..."
"Hmm, I think it's called a slime. But upon closer inspection, it doesn't seem entirely similar. Let's go to the Ancient Tree of Life first; it's about to collapse."
Hearing his old friend's words, Nar nodded and skillfully maneuvered the magic carpet, dodging the giant tentacles that were waving around aimlessly. Soon, the two arrived at the foot of the mountain. Sitting on the flying carpet, the two couldn't help but gasp as they looked at the environment around the Tree of Life.
The ancient tree was surrounded by a dense mass of corpses of all kinds, including ordinary humans, humanoids, and various magical beasts. Countless pieces of flesh and blood were scattered on the ground, and the stench of blood permeated the air, which could be smelled from a great distance.
The ancient tree of life, which was a hundred meters tall, looked very strange at this moment. The outer leaves had all turned as black as ink, and only the leaves in the middle of the crown barely maintained a yellow-green color. Nar manipulated the flying carpet to slowly land in front of the ancient tree of life.
Before the flying carpet had even come to a complete stop, Angela eagerly leaped off, her gaze fixed on the face with its eyes closed in the middle of the ancient tree.
Instantly, an overwhelming sense of sorrow welled up in my heart, and I involuntarily reached out my hands to gently stroke the ancient and rough tree trunk, as if comforting a wounded old friend.
At the same time, a dazzling green light suddenly emanated from Angela's body, rapidly spreading and enveloping the entire Tree of Life. Nourished by the magic of nature, the once dying Tree of Life seemed to regain its vitality, and its tightly closed eyes slowly opened.
“Ah~~~~~~~~~”
With a deep, powerless sigh, the ancient tree of life emitted a low sound.
“Angela, you’ve finally come… I thought… I wouldn’t be able to wait for you again…”
Before the ancient tree of life could finish speaking, withered yellow leaves, as if blown down by the autumn wind, fluttered down from the branches, adding to the desolate scene and making it even more tragic.
