Longevity locks are said to ward off disasters and evil spirits for infants, "locking" in their life. Therefore, it is a Chinese custom for newborns to wear longevity locks until they are twelve years old.

There was a loving couple. One day, the husband died in an accident, and the wife was devastated. She gave birth prematurely to their unborn child. The child was weak and frail, and it was feared that he would follow his father in a month or so.

The wife went to great lengths to find a doctor to see her. The doctor asked, "Are you willing to give your life for this child, regardless of the cost?

The wife nodded.

His wife continued to plead, vowing that if her son could live to adulthood, she would willingly descend into the Avici Hell to suffer torment.
