Chapter 114 The Pureblood Family's Squib

Chapter 114 The Pureblood Family's Squib
Before the Channel Tunnel between England and France was built.

The fastest driving route from London to Paris involves first driving from London to the port of Dover, then taking the ferry from the port, and finally taking the ferry with your car to the port of Calais in France. From Calais, you can then drive to Paris.

This was, of course, the route that Severus and his companions had planned for this trip.

The ferry from Dover to Calais is not hard to catch; there is one almost every hour.

They soon waited for a ferry, and after Severus paid for the tickets, just as they were about to board, they suddenly heard a dispute coming from the ticket check area behind them.

"You can't do this! It was just soaked in water, and I paid for the ticket!"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Rozier, most of the information on your ticket is illegible. According to our standards, we cannot inspect tickets damaged to this extent."

"Please help me! You must have other ways to prove this ticket is legitimate! My wife and I had our wallets stolen, and now we can only rely on this ticket to get home! Please help! I beg you to help me!"

"I'm sorry, sir, there's a problem with your ticket. We'd be unable to help even if we wanted to. If possible, please don't hold up the people behind you."

Upon hearing the conversation behind them, not only Severus but also Draco in the passenger seat turned around to look.

At the ticket checkpoint, a young couple, looking utterly dejected, held their rejected tickets and drove their car away from the boarding gate.

Severus turned back and exchanged a shocked glance with Draco.

"You heard that surname too, didn't you?"

"Impossible!" Draco exclaimed. "It's just a coincidence of names! How could someone from that family possibly board a Muggle's ship and then be harassed by the Muggles!"

Harry and Lupin didn't understand what they were saying, as neither of them knew much about purebloods.

Severus didn't say much. He simply drove the car onto the ferry, parked it in their assigned spot, and gave Lupin a word of advice.

"Watch the children, I'm going to check over there."

He then got off the ferry and went to the young couple's car.

"Have you been feeling unwell lately? Let's go see a doctor when we get back."

"I'm sorry, it's all my fault, Mary. I suddenly wanted to take you to Edinburgh, but we lost all our money in just two days, and our return train ticket got soaked in water."

The young man named Rozier covered his face, looking quite remorseful.

The woman next to him, who was clearly his wife, comforted him for a while, but afterwards they spoke only in French.

Even though Severus inherited Snape's memories, his understanding of French was only superficial, and he couldn't fully comprehend their language.

He reached out and knocked on the other person's car window.

It was only then that Rozier, sitting in the driver's seat, noticed someone standing outside the car.

He rolled down the car window and looked at Severus with a puzzled expression.

"What's your business?"

Severus stared into his eyes, not using Legilimency, but calmly asked.

"I never expected to run into the Rozier family here. How's Angelo been lately?"

Rozier.

One of the most famous pure-blood wizarding families in Europe.

Unlike the small Malfoy family, the Rozier family has branches in both England and France, and the descendants of this family are notorious in the eyes of most people. Some of the French Rozier were members of the Mughal Party in the past, while some of the British Rozier were the core of the Death Eaters in the past few decades!
Our family has lived a worthwhile life from ninety years ago to now.

At yesterday's Death Eater gathering at Malfoy Manor, there was a member of the Rozier family, who was none other than Angelo, the man Severus had mentioned.

Now, Severus was just about to leave England when he encountered a man named Rozier while boarding the ship. It would be strange if he didn't have any suspicions.

Upon hearing Severus's words, the young Rozier visibly panicked.

But Severus clearly sensed that this panic wasn't directed at him, but at the woman sitting in the passenger seat.

He hurriedly opened the car door and spoke a few words in French to the puzzled woman, as if to say that he had met an acquaintance and that she didn't need to get out.

Then, he pulled Severus to the back of the car.

“I’m sorry, sir, my wife doesn’t know what a wizard is, let alone what magic is. To avoid getting her into any trouble, I don’t want her to know about these things.”

Rozier looked at Severus with a pleading expression, while pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket.

Do you smoke?

“No, thank you, I don’t smoke.” Even without delving into the young man’s memories, Severus could tell whether the man was lying simply by his skillful use of the Legilimency spell.

"You wouldn't mind if I smoked one, would you?"

"It's alright. So, you really are from the Rozier family?"

“My parents are both wizards, and they are French, as am I. The Angelo you mentioned is probably a relative of mine in England. But they kicked me out of the house a long time ago, and even planned to make me change my surname. In the end, because I kept a low profile, they didn’t force me to change my surname completely.”

Rozier lit a cigarette for himself, shook his head with a wry smile.

Severus had already astutely realized his identity.

"Are you a Squib?"

“That’s right, a Squib born into the Rozier family.” Rozier shrugged. “My parents completely abandoned me after they found out I had no magical talent when I was 10 years old, and they didn’t acknowledge me as their child.”

“I’ve been wandering around since then, struggling on my own, and eventually became a car salesman. Then I met my wife Mary, who is very gentle and kind. We have a good life together. As for magic and wizards, I’ve long forgotten about them.”

That's the truth; he wasn't lying.

"Are you here for a trip to England?" Severus asked again. "Three days ago, my supervisor inexplicably gave me five days off. I was bored at home, so I suddenly had the idea to take Mary on a road trip to Edinburgh."

Rozier scratched his head, his face full of frustration.

"This decision was terrible. We had no plans or preparations for this trip, and the money we had was stolen yesterday, leaving only the ferry ticket for our return trip. This morning, I wasn't paying attention and accidentally dropped it into the toilet, almost flushing it away! I haven't been feeling well lately, and I keep making mistakes! I really should listen to Mary and see a doctor when we get back!"

After listening to his words, Severus felt that something was wrong with what had happened to him, but it seemed that the matter was not directed at them, but rather that he himself had encountered some kind of accident.

Using Legilimency on ordinary people or Squibs has a chance of damaging their minds, so Severus usually uses leading questions to obtain the information he wants from these people.

The man in front of them, Rozier, had happened to be on the same ferry as them, but now, even if he had the money to buy a new ticket, he wouldn't be able to catch the same ferry.

As for the troubles he himself was facing, Severus didn't have the time or inclination to delve into them.

"Is there enough fuel in your car to get you home?"

Severus asked casually.

"It should be barely possible, but if they don't accept our tickets, we won't be able to board the ship." Rozier stubbed out his cigarette butt, not throwing it away carelessly, but wrapping it in a piece of paper, intending to find a trash can later.

Just as he looked up again, a hand handed him a 50-pound note.

"Just in case you need to refuel along the way, this money should be enough for you to buy another ticket and get home."

Rozier looked up in surprise and met Severus's eyes. After a few seconds, he said with surprise and a touch of inexplicable gratitude.

"You...you don't discriminate against me because I'm a Squib?"

“Many people don’t discriminate.” Severus stuffed the money into his hand. “The only wizards you probably encountered when you were a child were the people in your family, but most people in the wizarding world are actually normal. Hurry up and buy a ticket for the next ship; you definitely won’t make this one.”

After saying that, Severus left without looking back. Rozier watched his departing figure, holding the banknotes in his hand, and asked anxiously.

"I don't even know your name. How am I supposed to repay you?"

"No need to pay it back, consider it my personal sponsorship for your trip."

Severus waved to him with his back turned and quickly returned to the ferry.

When he returned, Lupin was with Harry and Draco at the ferry shop, buying them juice.

Because of his undercover work on the werewolf case, he received a sum of money, which has made his current financial situation quite comfortable.

Draco remained as arrogant as ever, and didn't even thank Lupin when he brought him his juice.

"If your father didn't teach you what manners are, I can give you a lesson right now."

Upon returning, Severus calmly looked at Draco and spoke.

Draco craned his neck, clearly somewhat unconvinced, wanting to say something insulting to Lupin's werewolf identity, but after meeting Severus's eyes, he chickened out again in the next second.

"Thank you."

He said it in a low voice reluctantly, without caring whether Lupin heard him or not.

"What did you find?" Lupin wouldn't argue with a child who didn't understand, so he turned to Severus and asked.

“A Squib named Rozier.” Severus took the soda Lupin offered and leaned against the ferry railing, saying casually, “He comes from the Rozier family in France, but because he’s a Squib, he was kicked out of his family when he was young and hasn’t been in contact with anything related to the wizarding world for a long time. I heard his surname and, just in case, I went to check it out.”

Lupin and Harry didn't think much of what he was hearing, but Draco, who was standing nearby, was a little taken aback.

"The Rozier family's Squib!" He nearly choked on the juice he'd just taken a sip of. "Are you sure it's really the Rozier family from the wizarding world?"

Severus crossed his arms and watched as the ferry began to slowly depart from the port of Dover.

"Of course I can take responsibility for what I say."

"Impossible!" Draco's voice boomed. "Dad told me that as long as the bloodline remains pure, a wizard's descendants will only be wizards! Squibs are the offspring of those mixed-race wizards, those with impure bloodlines!"

Severus raised an eyebrow and asked.

"Did your father ever tell you that there were actually people in the Malfoy family who pursued Muggles? They just didn't pay any attention to them."

"You're talking nonsense!" Draco exclaimed, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

“I’ve heard about it too!” Harry said with a grin. “After his pursuit failed, he even put a curse on someone.”

Draco's face flushed red, and he glared angrily at Harry.

"I want to duel with you!"

“I’m not going to fight you. If you lose, you’ll just cry and call your parents. That’s no fun at all.” Harry refused his duel invitation.

Draco could only repeat it over and over.

"Anyway, no matter what you say, if that guy really was a Squib, he would never have the surname Rozier! Maybe he's a fraud, and he's lying to you!"

Harry looked at him curiously and asked.

"According to the principles your father taught you, shouldn't there be more and more pure-blood wizards in the magical world?"

"Because none of you will produce Squibs, while the offspring of wizards who choose to mate with Muggles have a chance of not being able to master magic. But why did Fred tell me that if those pure-blood families continue to insist on maintaining their pure bloodline, they will soon become extinct?"

Draco couldn't come up with any reasonable rebuttal to this question, and he continued to repeat himself in a nonsensical manner.

"I'm not going to listen to your nonsense! There will never be a Squib in a pureblood family!"
