Chapter 206, Chapter 25: A Lone Star Pressing Down on the City
Chapter 206 (Chapter 205) A Lone Star Presses Down on the City
It was the first time Lin Bo had witnessed the city at night. He saw large groups of resurrected corpses wandering the streets like sleepless residents, but they never greeted each other. They were like complete strangers to each other, even though they were of different ranks in the Undead Army and their strengths differed. They passed each other by as if they didn't see each other.
The city of the dead was quiet, devoid of production, entertainment, or conflict. Houses and residents alike slowly accumulated dust, as if the course of history had been frozen here.
The undead, formed from the corpses of humans, giants, and beasts, fought a war many years ago, but now comrades meet and enemies encounter each other, and all are met with indifference.
The hierarchy of superiors and inferiors, love and hate are creations of the living, but for the resurrected corpses, these concepts have long been annihilated by death.
However, their empty minds, corrupted by negative energy, eventually became paranoid, giving rise to an eternal hatred for the living. Furthermore, the control spells left behind by the necromancer forced them to submit to the power structure.
So when they saw a large group of elite warriors and players marching down the street, they immediately drew their weapons and let out a terrible roar.
As the Soul Summoning Witch charged forward on her wolf, she saw a large number of undead creatures surging out from the street ahead. She quickly raised her pendant, summoned the spirit of a monster, and unleashed a series of spherical spirit bombs. The dark purple orbs flew into the enemy tide, blasting open several gaps, but were instantly blocked by more undead.
A giant mountain demon strode into the enemy ranks, its stone club sweeping away dozens of undead with the speed of a whirlwind. Facing the giant-like undead of similar size, it displayed agility and strength surpassing even the dead, forcing them into a retreat. The spirit faction had the fewest troops, but their individual strength was the most outstanding.
With these allies leading the way, players were able to successfully navigate the streets crowded with enemies, ascend the steps in front of the Temple of Nature, and fight their way towards the gate.
The mournful sound of horns gradually rose from all directions, followed by the rumbling of ancient war drums. The deathly silent city was awakened by the flames of war, and a large number of necromancers dressed in red robes awoke from their slumber. They communicated with each other through magic and began to command and control the undead creatures that roamed and were stationed in various districts.
As the light of the Heartstone rose from the sky obscured by the city walls, the temple of the giant's tomb in the center of the ancient city began to tremble.
The necromancers of the Order became restless, like sheep that had heard the sound of a whip. Once they became agitated, their undead army also became restless, like muscles spasming due to nervous tension.
A portion of the city's troops surged towards the walls and gates, guarding against the red-maned boars charging on the horizon.
The guardian was blind and could not see the scenery, but upon hearing the lighthouse keeper's call, he still came as promised.
The liberated spirit of nature guides the guardian's path with the flow of air. Its four hooves tread on the tall grass, its steps stirring up green waves, and the heart stone above its head leaves a long, trailing red shadow, like a burning scar tearing through the dark earth.
The marching holy war troops also saw the blazing light in the distant sky and looked to the depths of the plains ahead, where a large red-maned boar carrying stars was galloping.
Player [Thorn Entangled] perked up and explained to the commander that this was an ally in this battle, and the battle had already begun.
"Light the torches and quicken the march!"
At the command, the armored human soldiers responded in unison, and nine thousand torches, like scattered stars, pierced the night, their orange-red light illuminating the robust silhouettes of catapults, ballistae, and siege engines.
On the wall, the necromancer nocked an arrow, drew the bowstring, and aimed at the approaching boar.
The remaining large force in the city launched a siege against the players who had raided the temple. The streets, like blood vessels, carried troops, strangling the invaders from all directions.
Lin Bo gripped the thin tube at his waist, changed his hand seals, activated his incantation, and manipulated his true name and the secret spirit mercury. He opened the stopper, and a dark, metallic ribbon floated out of the tube. It moved and twisted as nimbly as a dragon or snake in a story, spiraling along the mage's arm and gathering in the air in front of him.
He raised his hand and pointed, and the Mystic Mercury naturally separated into a bead the size of a thumb. A complex, pictorial rune appeared on its surface, and he murmured in dragon language, "(Incantation) Light."
The city was shaken by a thunderous roar, and then a bright, dazzling star rose from the street, illuminating everything in the city clearly, casting shadows as thick as iron.
Beneath the blinding starlight, a striking figure floated, clearly visible to tens of thousands of undead, hundreds of red-robed spellcasters, and the players present.
The enemy tide that had been surrounding the temple of nature suddenly hesitated in place.
"This guy is too flashy." [Cold Rain] sat on the roof, watching the large number of undead creatures on the street heading towards the light source. "With so many undead, can he kill them all?"
"With the blood moon overhead, even if the monsters die, they can still revive. No matter how many he can kill, it's useless." The [sewing artist] in the courtyard was busy piecing together the corpses with needle and thread. His summoned creatures were also smashed to pieces by the mage in the duel, so he had no choice but to prepare new supplies.
"Shall we join in the fun?" A shadow mage winked and let out a deliberately sinister laugh.
"Don't be so tasteless." Most of his companions rolled their eyes and rejected the suggestion. "You can't lose face. If you go and kick someone when they're down, you'll make a fool of yourself if they find out."
After discussing it for a while, they found it boring and each found a good spot to watch the battle silently, as magical eyeballs and camera drones approached the edge of the battlefield.
Lin Bo hovered in the air, bathed in the refreshing night breeze. The spirits of nature bestowed blessings upon him, dispelling the weakening curse that the blood moon had brought to his spirit. The whispers of the wind told him the movements of all the enemies in the city.
This land is now his ally.
Looking down, the dead surged like a tide.
He formed the Ruyi Mudra with his hands, and the mysterious mercury floating in front of him began to split, shaping into nearly a thousand sharp spikes. Without any enchantment, they plunged straight down, like a shimmering rain of blood drenching the street. A buzzing sound followed them, and corpses were gouged out with holes that let light through them, falling like broken honeycombs.
Where the bright star shines overhead, no enemy can escape.
The sound of the wind whispered in the mage's ears, warning him where necromancers were chanting malevolent spells, and which houses had lurking spies behind their windows. The air currents swept through the entire area; they were all Lin Bo's eyes and ears.
Guided by the sound of the wind, the sharp and hard mystical mercury cones pierced through the air, piercing walls and breaking shields. One by one, necromancers preparing to cast spells screamed in horror. Even those hiding indoors could not escape the pursuit and were torn to pieces in an instant.
Iron rain whistled through the air, its chilling howl like a gale sweeping through the mountain crevices, the air crackling with a sharp whistling sound, and the entire ancient city shrouded in terrifying light and blood-red shooting stars.
The players in the necromancer faction were pale-faced. They witnessed how an entire street of necromancers was wiped out in half a second. The whistling jets of metal flew past them like a school of fish in the blink of an eye, and the powerful wakes they created made the doors and windows rattle.
"Is this really necessary?" The Shadow Mage, who had just suggested a covert attack, hugged himself tightly in fear.
"This guy's heart is wicked." [Cold Rain]'s face was even paler than the skeletons under his command. "He actually suggested that the story factions clash head-on in the next team battle. I thought we'd have the advantage!"
"So he can destroy our main city all by himself?!" The Necromancer players cried out in agony.
"What kind of team fight is this?!"
Minutes later, the ancient city fell into a deathly silence that was even more desolate than death itself.
The streets were littered with wreckage and severed limbs, and houses had collapsed one after another. Under his cover, his companions had already stormed into the Temple of Nature.
Lin Bo drank two bottles of whale oil potion, then took a vitality potion, and silently waited for his energy to recover.
About half a minute later, the corpses and bloodstains on the ground dissolved in the faint moonlight, and dense shadows appeared on the street, slowly fading from the darkness and transforming back into the figures of the enemy.
They have returned from the dead.
A deafening explosion echoed from the city wall, followed by a burst of brilliant, vibrant light. A massive, red-maned boar, its body taller than a house and covered in soot, pounded the ground with a thud. Saliva dripped from its mouth as it roared, "Child of Power, I have come as promised!"
Lin Bo murmured to the air, "(in magical language) Please bring me the Heart Stone."
The spirit of nature obeyed the command and used magical winds to lift the living fossil atop the giant pig's head and deliver it to the mage.
In the health status section, the Blood Moon Curse has been completely suppressed, the Life Spring status is boosted, and the depleted energy is rapidly restored.
Now, Lin Bo can act freely.
Suddenly, the burial temple not far away trembled, and the earth shook.
The arrival of the Heartstone caused the giant's undead to spiral out of control. The Necromancer Order was doing its best to suppress it, but the spirits of nature were constantly eroding their negative magic.
The mystical mercury that had been traversing the city no longer gathered in groups, but began to scatter and fly in all directions.
With the Heart Stone's blessing, Lin Bo digested the whale oil potion extremely quickly, and with his spell power fully replenished, he could forcefully unleash advanced magic techniques.
The entire city was once again slaughtered, and this time, the killing speed was even faster.
Even though the Blood Moon could resurrect them time and time again, it could not stop their repeated defeats. The mage, suspended beneath the bright star, still stood tall, holding up the Heart Stone to illuminate the ancient city, the wind howling around him, making his robes flutter wildly.
Twenty minutes later, an explosion rang out in the Temple of Nature, and a notification popped up before Lin Bo's eyes indicating that the mission was complete. The guardians' suppressed power was restored, and the wounds on the red-maned boar and its damaged eyes began to heal and regenerate. It let out a joyful cry, and clusters of flames rose from its body.
Inside the temple, the other three guardians teleported in. The enormous white wolf had silvery, fluffy fur, like frost and snow. The blue peacock's wings glowed with fireflies. Its body was no longer deformed and swollen. The old tortoise's petrified limbs returned to flesh and blood, and new buds sprouted from the bare tree on its back.
"Child of Power, we will fight for you!" The beasts cried out in different ways, but their words were the same.
Lin Bo pointed towards the direction of the temple.
The four guardians immediately charged into the burial grounds, and soon destroyed the magical ritual binding the giant's remains. With the giant's roar, the boundless negative energy in his lungs transformed into a towering blue pillar of light that annihilated the temple dome.
The high-ranking members of the Necromancer Order and the Guardians are locked in fierce combat.
The giant's remains turned their gaze toward the suspended mage.
Lin Bo raised his hand and sent the Brilliant Heart Stone into the chest of the corpse.
The giant took a deep breath and roared powerfully.
The raging roar came like a mountain collapsing and the sea overturning, blowing away and tearing apart houses along the way, and making the bricks and stones on the street tremble like raindrops.
Lin Bo changed the hand seals and whispered, "(Incantation) Power."
The dragon's voice reverberated through the air, a powerful shockwave emanating from him, clashing with the giant's roar. A gale howled like the bellow of a wounded elephant. Within a few feet of Lin Bo, the spherical space remained silent, like a rock beneath a giant wave.
The mystical mercury that was raging through the city gathered together, and the liquid metal spontaneously fused together, transforming into a thin ribbon with a dragon rune appearing on its surface.
“(The incantation) is sharp.”
The dark, mysterious mercury, imbued with magical light, emitted a sharp, blood-red hue that seemed capable of piercing the retina. It suddenly flew away, tearing the air in front of it so that it could not make a sound. Like a rainbow, it landed on the giant's hand covering his heart, leaving a hole through which light could pass, before emerging from behind.
The heart has been shattered.
Despite the increased difficulty, the giant's remains had not yet fallen and were still reaching out to strike Lin Bo.
The mysterious mercury swiftly traversed the body, constantly cutting it apart. Even though the giant's remains were mangled, it could still move, though its movements became increasingly slow.
A single punch or kick can create a gust of wind that can blow doors and windows away.
The undead unleashed a ferocious spell, and the surging gravitational waves could lift tens of tons of walls and houses like withered grass, along with the undead army caught in the blast, all of which were hurled towards Lin Bo.
The mage knew that this was the boss monster entering its invincible state before death, so he stopped attacking and only dodged.
Five minutes later, the giant's remains, having exhausted its last bit of strength, finally came to rest on the ruins.
The sun had not yet risen. On the ravaged land, battles continued.
But this most powerful undead has already rested in peace.
The wind dispersed the dust from the streets, and the players who had been hiding emerged from the shadows, looking up at the mage who was floating peacefully in the air. A notification popped up on the information board.
[Network notification: Mission complete - Return to dust]
