Necromancer, summoning 055? What the heck?
Chapter 42 Escape from the Giant Stone Fortress
Chapter 42 Escape Back to the Stone Fortress
The captain of the guard, who had fought his way through the battlefield and emerged from the land of blood and fire, abandoned all supplies with an almost resolute attitude, taking only a small amount of water and all the horses, and led the remaining men in the team to begin a frantic escape.
Target—Stonecastle!
This distance is not short. Logically speaking, there are several human towns closer within the Creek Moon Federation, but at this moment, Peiwen's nerves are like a fully drawn bowstring, taut and about to burst.
He doesn't trust anyone in the Xiyue Federation!
Such a large number of orc wolf riders were able to infiltrate human territory silently and ambush them with precision—there must be a powerful local force providing logistical and intelligence support behind the scenes.
Otherwise, how could they have deceived humans and evaded their sight? How could they have obtained enough meat to feed the dire wolves? And how could they have precisely timed their group's journey and the timing of their movements?
Pevin even suspected that the mastermind behind it all might be one of the dominant forces in a nearby town.
Go to Stonehenge.
The city lord there had been classmates with the Cloud Mist Lord for a period of time, so they had some connection and seemed a little more trustworthy.
The two carriages sped along, jolting and bumping. At this point, etiquette was no longer of concern. The young lady-in-waiting, Linda, and a maid squeezed into the first carriage, while the alchemist Master Locke and three other still-shaken maids were crammed into the other.
Inside the carriage, old Locke had no desire for romance whatsoever; his mind was filled with the horrific scene from the battlefield.
As a therapist, his attention was focused on Pevin, who needed help, waiting for a possible opportunity to intervene. Therefore, he saw it clearly: Pevin had simply thrown out a small gadget...
It's really just a little gadget!
The steel plate armor melted away so completely! When the orc chieftain Mogru tore open his breastplate, Old Locke rushed over and witnessed a horrifying scene: most of the orc chieftain's body had been burned through, and even his bones had been carbonized.
And all of this happened in just a few breaths.
Such powerful war tools are not uncommon, but their small size, their sudden activation without warning, and the absence of any magical fluctuations are quite alarming.
Ignoring the maids huddled like rain-soaked quails at the corner of the carriage, Locke couldn't help but lift the curtain and shout, "Pevin, what did you use? What is that thing?"
Pevin and the mercenary Luke, who was leading the way, each rode a warhorse. The two of them controlled their horses while driving the spare horses, closely following behind the carriage.
Hearing Locke's call, Peven spurred his horse and caught up.
As a warrior, respect for healers is ingrained in his bones, especially since this master himself holds a very high position in the territory. After hesitating for a moment, Peiwen spurred his horse to close the distance slightly and raised his voice to reply: "It is a gift of thanks from the necromancer who traveled in the airship to the princess!"
"I don't know what it is. He said it's a fire-breathing device and told me to use it carefully. I didn't expect it to have this effect!"
"Ah? Did that little skeleton master give me this?" The little princess's face appeared from the window of another carriage. Her pale face was staring with a pair of big eyes that showed a mixture of fear and surprise.
"Yes, Your Highness!" the Golden Scale Swordsman replied decisively.
"Your kindness saved us!"
This bloody battle will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on everyone. Others may not care, but Peiwen hopes that the little princess can get rid of the shadow as soon as possible.
Giving positive feedback is the best form of psychotherapy.
Sure enough, Liu Shuang's eyes lit up immediately.
The horses clattered, the west wind howled, and the captain of the guards, with his exceptional hearing, heard Princess Liushuang's somewhat smug voice coming from the carriage.
"Linda, Linda! Did you see that? I told you, I wasn't fooled!"
This was followed by a gentle response from the female officer, Linda, tinged with relief at surviving the ordeal:
"Yes, yes, my little prince, you are the best! You have the best taste!"
After a period of continuous galloping, during a break when Peiwen was arranging for the caravan to change horses, the young princess Liu Shuang quietly slipped off the carriage and tiptoed to Peiwen, who was checking the horse tack. "Uncle Peiwen," she said softly, "how is your injury...?"
"Thank you, Your Highness. I'm fine and will recover soon!"
"Then, if we didn't have that weapon, would today have been very dangerous?"
Peiwen tightened the horse's collar and harness with a little force, straightened the tattered and drooping shoulder armor, and gave the little princess an impeccable military salute.
“Your Highness, without that weapon, we will all either die or be captured by the orcs.”
"You saved all of our lives!"
Liu Shuang's eyes curved into a crescent moon.
And so, with people constantly resting and horses being rotated, the caravan finally arrived at the important town of the Creek Moon Federation—Giant Stone Fortress—before the last rays of the setting sun sank below the horizon.
The guards stepped forward and showed the travel documents, while Peiwen took a dire wolf's head from the saddle and slammed it heavily to the ground.
"Orcish wolf riders have crossed the border and are ambushing and killing nobles of my Emerald Duchy in the Longwind Hills. Immediately notify the city garrison!"
The wolf's head was far more intimidating than the orc's head, and the castle guards immediately blew their whistles.
"Dang-dang-dang-!"
The heavy alarm bells rang out! The massive city gates began to close amidst the ear-piercing sound of winches! The sturdy chevaux-de-frise were pushed to the front of the city gates by the shouts of the soldiers! Smoke and dust rose from the city as a large number of heavily armored city guards rushed onto the city walls!
Peiwen's tense nerves relaxed slightly, and he exhaled a long breath of foul air that smelled of blood.
Just then, the clear, slightly arrogant voice of the young princess Liu Shuang came from behind him again.
"Grandpa Locke, isn't the thing that little mage gave me amazing? Can you...can you make it?"
Looking at the young princess, who was filled with anticipation yet tried her best to appear nonchalant, as if she were just asking casually, Old Locke couldn't help but smile with relief.
He replied in a slightly exaggerated tone of surprise, "Oh my, my little prince! That old man could never make such a thing!"
"Your judgment is still the best! I'm convinced! I remember the first time we met that little mage, everyone thought he was of dubious origin, but it was you who ordered me to heal him!"
"No, it's not you, it's this old man, who's going to bury his bones here today!"
Linda, the lady-in-waiting, and her maids chimed in softly, their voices filled with sincere gratitude and the joy of surviving a close call.
"Yes, thanks to the kind young prince!"
"Your Highness is truly the Duke's lucky star!"
"I always said that being able to serve by Her Highness the Princess's side is our greatest fortune in a lifetime!"
Liu Shuang's face flushed slightly, her hands nervously twisting the hem of her clothes, her toes unconsciously rubbing against the ground, her body gently swaying in the fading sunlight.
Captain Peven gave Old Locke an approving gesture, then turned around and whispered, "Luke!"
"Yes, sir!" Luke, the mercenary who had been slumped on the ground, rubbed his thigh and jumped up.
"I'm giving you a task: find out about that little mage on the spaceship, his name is... Chen Mo, right? Aren't you quite familiar with him? Go and find out where he is."
"ASAP!"
