Battlefield Priest's Diary

Chapter 48 The Stormy Waves

Chapter 48 The Stormy Waves (Part 2)

"Hurrah!!!" The Russian soldiers actually turned around and charged in the opposite direction!
"Are they crazy?" someone in the group muttered to themselves.

Galloping on horseback in the dark is already quite dangerous; a slight misstep could lead to a fall. A cavalry charge requires pushing the horse to its maximum speed under such conditions, which is essentially dancing on a knife's edge.

As the enemy drew closer, the German soldiers couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect.

The opposing cavalry clearly chose this suicidal method to cover the retreat of their friendly forces ahead.

Lieutenant Colonel Hoffman raised his hand high, signaling the cavalry to halt, and then shouted, "Everyone, raise your guns!"

Hundreds of rifles were raised. Although there were no automatic weapons, as long as the line of fire was dense enough, death was the only fate awaiting these riders.

The distance between the two sides was rapidly closing, and the lieutenant colonel's hand was about to strike. He had no chivalrous thoughts whatsoever; quickly eliminating the enemy in front of him was the most important thing.

A hundred meters away, a strange change suddenly occurred.

As the Russian cavalrymen ran, they pulled out strange-looking bottles from somewhere, swung them in a circle in the air, and then hurled them forcefully towards this side!

boom! boom! boom!
One after another, the sound of shattering glass rang out, followed by a towering fire that burned like a wall in front of the German troops.

Hiss!! Hiss!!

The warhorses in the front row reared up on all fours and suddenly became restless. Although they were trained warhorses, the animals' natural fear of fire was still there.

Bang bang bang bang! ! ! !
A volley of gunfire followed, and several muffled groans of pain echoed from the ranks.

The German cavalrymen, illuminated by the flames, were as conspicuous as light bulbs in the dark, making them perfect targets for shooting.

Not only that, the Russians, halfway through their charge, after firing a volley, actually maneuvered their warhorses, drew an arc about a hundred meters from the vanguard, and turned to flee.

That's right, they ran away!
"Follow them! They can't get too far!" The lieutenant colonel, his temper flaring, issued the worst order of the night.

In the darkness, the race between the two cavalry units began.

Qin Hao gripped his warhorse's neck tightly, feeling the wind constantly blowing past his ears. He hadn't expected the German pursuers to arrive so quickly. Now, he had no choice but to follow along with a few cavalrymen.

Looking at the Germans lagging far behind, Qin Hao cursed under his breath, "Damn it! I didn't ask you to eat 50 marks worth of bread, why are you risking your life like this!"

As his mind wandered slightly, Qin Hao felt his body sway and he was about to lose his balance when someone pulled him up from behind.

“Father, please be careful not to think about anything else, it’s very dangerous.” Panasenko tugged at him from behind. At this moment, the cavalry captain was riding a horse with the priest in black.

With two people and one horse, the speed was obviously too fast. Before long, the horse's breathing became heavy, and fine beads of sweat appeared on its neck.

"Father, if this continues, we'll be caught up. What should we do?" the cavalry captain asked in a deep voice.

“Panasenko, do you remember the hill we went to before?” Qin Hao asked, grabbing the horse’s mane.

“I remember, Father.” The cavalry captain’s expression hardened as he recalled that stormy scene.

Is the priest going to...?

Several warhorses galloped to the foot of the hill. Panasenko drew his rifle and Molotov cocktail and shouted to his comrades, "Take cover! Prepare for battle! We must not let the enemy charge up!"

He then turned and bowed slightly to Qin Hao, saying, "Father Pugin, please go up. We will fight to the death to hold the enemy off the mountain and buy you time."
This caught Qin Hao off guard for a moment.

I haven't said anything yet, how do you know everything?!

But there was no time to think about it. Qin Hao patted the Bolshevik on the shoulder and then ran up.

A barrage of gunfire erupted behind them.

Staggering to the top of the mountain, Qin Hao took out his cross, and after rotating the bottom, a round tube-like object extended out—a survival flare-like colored light bomb, which could be seen from more than ten kilometers away after being ignited.

"I hope Vasily and the others have arrived by now," Qin Hao muttered to himself.

Then, as he pulled out the fuse, he looked at the cross and said, "Now it's really my turn to pray. Considering how long I've been wearing this outfit, please help me out."

The next moment, a beam of crimson light shone on the mountaintop, swaying incessantly.

Gunfire continued to erupt at the foot of the mountain, and several Molotov cocktails were smashed down from the summit, the raging flames hindering the German advance.

"Sir, we've surrounded this area." A young lieutenant saluted Lieutenant Colonel Hoffman.

Lieutenant Colonel Hoffman gazed at the mountain scenery in deep thought, while a second lieutenant, eager to impress, continued, "Sir, this mountain isn't high. We could blast our way to the top with mortars. There's also no water source; a few men can't hold out for long."

Only then did Hoffman nod. "Not bad. At that age, I wasn't as meticulous as you."

The young lieutenant was overjoyed. He stood with his feet together and snapped to attention, saluting sharply. "I am honored to receive your affirmation."

Hoffmann looked at the lieutenant before him and couldn't help but think of Manstein, who was still in the hospital waiting for his medal. Suddenly wanting to offer a suggestion, he turned to the man and asked, "So, young sir, can you guess why they're holding out here so desperately?"

"This..." The lieutenant hesitated for a moment before finally saying, "From a military perspective, there's no point in holding out here without reinforcements. I can't understand why they're doing this. They're probably desperate and resorting to desperate measures."

"A cornered rat bites a cat?" Hoffman chewed on the phrase repeatedly, then his expression gradually turned serious. He then ordered those around him, "Attack quickly! Don't give them a chance to breathe, take it down as soon as possible."

"Sir, a direct assault in this situation will definitely result in casualties. We can wait until dawn to launch the attack. There's no need to do it now..." someone advised.

"No, obey orders!" The growing unease in his heart made the lieutenant colonel uneasy.

The next second, someone pointed to the mountaintop.

"Look, what's that?!"

There was a bright red object high up that kept flashing and swaying, as if it were guiding something.

The unease grew stronger, and the lieutenant colonel drew his weapon. "Everyone's ready. Follow me immediately..."

Boom! ! ! !

A muffled thunderous sound echoed from afar, drawing everyone's attention in another direction.

next second!
The ground beneath their feet began to tremble.
