Chapter 269 Refugees
The next day, Madam Chi was able to get out of bed and jump around, which scared General Chi half to death. He quickly went to Xin Nian for help.

Xin Nian examined Madam Chi thoroughly and exclaimed in admiration, "Madam's physical condition is truly excellent. General Chi, there's no need to worry, she's perfectly fine."

General Chi breathed a sigh of relief and hurriedly smiled, cupped his hands, and thanked him repeatedly.

"He's just being overly anxious. I already told him it's nothing serious, nothing serious!"

"Don't take medicine unnecessarily," Xin Nian said with a smile. "The temperature has started to drop recently, and I estimate we'll need to rest for another six or seven days before we have to set off."

Madam Chi waved her hand dismissively, "It's alright! I'm in great spirits! I can set off anytime."

General Chi was both amused and exasperated. He helped his wife sit down and dutifully placed a cushion behind her, saying, "Please excuse my poor appearance, young lady."

Madam Chi waved her hand, "Niannian is no outsider, why are you laughing at her?"

“Yes.” Xin Nian chuckled and pulled out a stack of baby clothes. “The temperature may drop later, and the baby has just been born, so we need to be careful to keep him warm.”

"Oh my, the fabric of this little dress is so fine!" Madam Chi exclaimed with delight as she reached out and took the dress, touching it from left to right. "It's so nice, so nice. I've never seen this style before, it's so novel."

General Chi thanked him profusely and went to fetch another bag of fine rice. Xin Nian, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, quickly stopped him.

"Little Chi has always helped me a lot! He made me many practical weapons and armor. General Chi, you don't need to be so polite with these little clothes."

Madam Chi was overjoyed, "It's good that this boy can help you."

"Girl," Dali called out from outside the tent.

Xin Nian bid farewell to General Chi and his wife. As soon as she stepped out of the tent, Dali ran up to her. "Miss, the commander wants you to come over. There are quite a few refugees outside. They look much worse off than the officials and their families from the capital."

Xin Nian frowned slightly and followed Dali towards the edge of the woods.

Xin Wenyuan was negotiating with someone through the spatial barrier when he turned his head and saw his daughter coming over. His brows relaxed. "Daughter, look at those people."

“They said they fled from Fengzhou. I asked Lao Liang, and he said that if you run downstream from Fengzhou, you can reach here. Moreover, there are many waterways in that area, and there might still be springs on the mountain that haven’t dried up.”

"But look at these people, something seems off to me. Those eyes are so red, aren't they? Did they not sleep well or are they infected? And look at that person in the back, doesn't he have a tumor on his chin? And he's hiding behind others, isn't that abnormal?"

Xin Nian nodded. "It's not normal."

She glanced at them briefly and realized that there were quite a few refugees, numbering two or three hundred.

"Commander, we can't let them in!" Marquis Dingxing shouted, peering into the woods. "Those people look like they have diseases. If we catch something, we'll all be in trouble."

"Yes, yes, Commander." The people gathered at the entrance of the woods looked very nervous. "If we let them in, there won't be enough room for them."

First of all, the families of officials in the capital who lived on the edge of the forest strongly opposed it.

They're already living in cramped conditions; they're almost being squeezed out of the woods. If another group of people comes in to compete for territory, it'll be a nightmare.

Xin Nian whispered a few words to her father, who nodded and said loudly, "We have limited space here and cannot accommodate so many of you."

"But we can give you some water and wheat bran. If you need them, just line up."

The group of men, looking weary, repeatedly bowed and said, "Honorable ones, please take us in for the night. We are all too exhausted to walk any further."

Xin Wenyuan nodded. “You can set up camp ten zhang away, but I see that many of you have tumors on your faces, which may be contagious. When distributing food and water, you must not approach or make a fuss. You can only come and collect the supplies after we have placed them in the designated area.”

"Thank you, thank you." The leader thanked them, and the others didn't dare to cause any trouble. Although they weren't allowed into the woods, they were at least provided with water and wheat bran. In those days, being able to eat wheat bran was already a great blessing, since many of them were so hungry that they had started eating wasteland.

"You all step back. Back at least seven or eight zhang. We will draw a center line at five zhang."

"Yes, yes." The refugees from Fengzhou looked miserable and slowly backed away upon hearing this.

"Sixth Sister, won't it be dangerous for you to go out?" Aunt Wang asked with a worried look. "Are all these people sick? Could it be contagious?"

"It's alright." Xin Nian turned around and waved to the group. "You all go back into the woods. Those of us who went out are all protected."

As he spoke, he took out several sets of protective suits and distributed them to his father, older brother, and chubby son.

"Fourth Uncle..." A voice, barely audible, faintly reached Xin Nian's ears.

After putting on their protective suits, Xin Wenyuan and his daughter turned around and saw a woman with a frail figure and disheveled hair walking out of the crowd, her face obscured.

Behind them followed a thin man carrying a child and an elderly woman with a sallow complexion.

The team leader was forcefully pushing them back, shouting things like "Don't provoke the important people."

"Sister-in-law Zhang, you should go back quickly. Don't anger the important people. It would be a loss and would also implicate everyone. The important people have already said they will provide us with food and water. Just wait."

“He is my fourth uncle…” Zhang’s sister-in-law managed to utter these words, and was pushed so hard that she stumbled and almost fell.

"Fourth Uncle, Fourth Uncle, it's me, Wanrou, it's me, Wanrou!" Zhang's sister-in-law's voice was barely audible as she was being grabbed and pulled by several people.

If Xin Nian hadn't had amazing hearing, she really wouldn't have been able to hear that sound.

Despite the noise from so far away, Xin Wanrou was extremely anxious, but her throat was so dry she felt like it was on fire, and she couldn't raise her voice at all.

Seeing that these people were about to push their family to the back, they cried out in desperation, "Fourth Uncle, Fourth Uncle!"

“Father, he calls you Fourth Uncle and says she is Wanrou.”

"Wanrou?" Xin Wenyuan couldn't immediately place the name on her name...

"It should be the second daughter of the first wife?" Xin Nian didn't have much of an impression. She only knew that the second daughter of the first wife had married and moved away to another place several years ago.

"Oh, Wanrou, the Wanrou of the first wife." Xin Wenyuan suddenly realized and turned to instruct Dali, "Go quickly and invite the first wife here, let her take a look and see if she is the second young lady."

Xin Nian remained noncommittal. This second daughter is in such a state that even her own mother probably wouldn't recognize her.

"Hey girl, tell them to release the person first, and let Wanrou come closer to take a look."

Xin Nian, fully protected, instantly emerged from the woods and arrived before the Fengzhou refugees in the blink of an eye.

The lead refugee was startled by her elusive movements. "You?"

"Let go." Xin Nian raised her chin to signal, looked at the Zhang family members who were being grabbed and pushed backward, and finally her gaze fell on Zhang's sister-in-law, who was covered in soot.

"Are you Xin Wanrou?"

"Yes, I am." Xin Wanrou was so excited she was almost trembling. "You, you are my... sixth sister?"

When she got married, her sixth sister was still young.
