Chapter 286 The Human-Faced Ram-Horned God

There was a thin layer of dust on Chu Xingrou's windowsill.

Su Miaoyi's window was very clean, clearly wiped down recently.

Then I checked both the inside and outside of the window.

The footprints have all been cleaned up.

Police officers from the local station and other officers from the branch office came with their investigation kits and searched the small shop inside and out, but found nothing.

Very clean.

Su Miaoyi and the others stood in front of the loudspeaker at the convenience store.

"This loudspeaker is used to announce new arrivals at the convenience store. It's the same one used by the village committee. The whole village can hear it, and if the wind is blowing in your direction, you can definitely hear it in the town," said Zhao Yongliang, a police officer at the local police station. "It's also very easy to use; you just turn it on and it's ready to go."

"This is a small media player, and it's playing songs," Duan Wenrui said.

Su Miaoyi picked up the media player and took a look.

It's very small and old.

Su Miaoyi turned it on and played it.

The song came out instantly.

The sound quality is very poor, and there is some static noise.

Thump thump thump, thump thump thump, punishment is descending, no one who has sinned will escape, the God of Sheep has already sent them home.

Dong Dong Dong, Dong Dong Dong.
It's just these few sentences over and over again, nothing else.

"Is this a folk song from around here?" Su Miaoyi asked.

Duan Wenrui and the police officers at the police station both shook their heads: "No, we've never heard of it before. This is the first time we've heard of it."

Su Miaoyi glanced at Duan Wenrui, who seemed normal. Then she looked at the police officers at the police station: "But why do you all look a little off when you hear about it?"

Duan Wenrui also looked at the police officers at the police station.

Lu Zhishen also looked at them.

Something is definitely wrong.

The owner of the small shop did not close it after hearing the folk song.

Even though everyone in the house was awake and had their lights on, no one came out.

The whole village was unusually quiet.

“This is indeed the first time I’ve heard this folk song, but the Sheep God is not unfamiliar to us,” Zhao Yongliang said.

Several people looked at him.

"We all call him the Human-Faced Ram-Horned God, or simply the Ram God or Ram-Horned God."

"A god with a human face and ram's horns," Su Miaoyi repeated.

“Yes,” Zhao Yongliang said. “It’s our local belief, the god we worship. There’s a place in our town specifically for worshipping the Ram Horn God. The human-faced Ram Horn God protects our land and is the guardian deity of this area. We hold three large-scale sacrificial ceremonies for the Ram Horn God every year.”

"Since they are guardian deities, why does everyone seem a little afraid?" Lu Zhishen asked.

"Legend has it that the Goat Horned God has two sides, one yang and one yin. The yang side is a guardian deity, protecting nature and the people. The yin side is a punishing deity, and when it appears, it is usually accompanied by some kind of punishment. This song is clearly a divine punishment coming down, and everyone must be afraid."

Su Miaoyi looked at them.

Chu Xingrou said, "This is obviously deliberate. Someone sneaked in and put the player here, deliberately using the Goat Horn God to create panic. Why is everyone still so afraid? Not a single person has come out."

She said it with a hint of surprise.

The entire village remained silent. "Yes," Zhao Yongliang said. "We've passed down the teachings from generation to generation: when the ram's horn god's punishment descends, one must not speak, must not go out, and must not disturb the ram's judgment and punishment of sins. We've believed in this for generations, so we certainly have a sense of reverence. But this time, it's probably mainly because it's so late. What kind of good person would sneak into a small shop and play such a recording? It's probably a criminal, so everyone is definitely afraid to come out. If we run into them, we're doomed."

Chu Xingrou nodded; that made sense.

“The owner of this small shop is also afraid to come in. He called and said that if he came in, the criminals would be hiding inside, and he would be handing himself over to them, so he doesn’t dare to come,” Zhao Yongliang said. “Especially since there’s a murder case in our village and the perpetrators haven’t been caught yet, every household is afraid.”

Chu Xingrou nodded again.

She felt that she was the one who was terrified by the punishment, so much so that her mind was a little foggy.

"The only people who would think of using this to create panic are from this county. Only our entire county believes in the Ram Horn God," Zhao Yongliang said.

"Could it be related to the murderer?" Duan Wenrui asked.

"It's hard to say," Su Miaoyi said. "But this person jumped in through the window and then jumped out again, cleaning up all the footprints."

“After all, we’ve done extensive searches for footprints before, so any criminal would be afraid of being found by their footprints and would probably try to erase them,” Lu Zhishen said.

Duan Rui nodded.

Su Miaoyi played the audio from the player again: "Since it's not a folk song from here, it's probably just made up. This voice doesn't sound like it's synthesized by AI; it sounds like someone recorded it."

Lu Zhishen listened to it again: "The voice has been processed, so it's impossible to tell if it's male or female. We can send it to the city to try to restore it and get it checked."

"Okay." Duan Wenrui placed the player in the evidence bag.

“But then again, if he’s the murderer of Wan Shuang and Gao Hui, why would he play such a song? Why would he try to scare people? And wouldn’t that make him easier to catch?” Duan Wenrui said. “If he’s not the murderer, then who would play this, and for what purpose? To create panic? Why create panic?”

“I think it’s a bit provocative to the police,” Lu Zhishen said.

Su Miaoyi looked at him.

The mention of provoking the police.

A man's face appeared in her mind.

“We are investigating a case, and he came here in the middle of the night to play this stuff. Besides scaring people, I think it's very provocative,” Lu Zhishen said.

"Why are you provoking us?" Duan Wenrui looked like he wanted to curse, but he swallowed the words back.

Yanjing Village is not large.

The police searched the entire village, firstly to check for suspicious individuals, and secondly to ensure the safety of the villagers.

After confirming that everything was alright, they used the village's loudspeaker to broadcast some important information.

I told everyone that someone was deliberately creating panic, and I also asked everyone to close their doors and windows, take more precautions, and pay more attention to safety, especially not to go out at night.

Su Miaoyi and the others didn't sleep anymore; they stayed in the village's brigade discussing the case.

Police officers from the local police station took turns searching and guarding the village.

They worried that the criminals might be hiding in some corner or in someone's yard.

So they didn't leave all night.

Su Miaoyi and her companions saw the human-faced, ram-horned god they had been talking about through the village chief.

Both the yin and yang sides have been seen.

The sun-faced god is more majestic and divine, while the yin-faced god has an added sense of terror.
It looks very similar to the ghost face mask that Su Miaoyi saw in the video.

However, the ghost mask in the picture is more terrifying and evil. It can be seen that it is related to the horned god, but its main purpose is to scare people.
 Goodnight everybody.

I'll correct the typos tomorrow; I'm getting scared of writing them myself again.
