Chapter 90: Spy Infiltrates

Liang Yi followed the guards and hurried to the East District, which was near the foot of the mountain and usually deserted.

Several militiamen were seen escorting a man who was soaking wet and looked extremely disheveled.

The man was wearing ill-fitting old work clothes, his eyes darting around, and he stammered and gave incoherent answers when questioned.

"Reporting to Commander Liang, this man claims to be a lost herb gatherer, but he doesn't even have a basket or hoe on him. When asked what herbs he's gathering, he can't say. Judging from the mud on the soles of his shoes, he seems to have come from the back of the mountain."

After a militia captain finished speaking, he took out something else.

"This fell down when he was running away; it looks like a photographic piece of paper."

If this person hadn't said things that were so incoherent, they probably wouldn't have suspected anything.

After all, what kind of good person would go out to collect herbs in the middle of the night, especially in the rain?

Isn't that insane?

Upon hearing the militiamen talk about the back mountain, alarm bells rang in Liang Yi's mind.

The terrain there is complex and close to the border, so the authorities have repeatedly emphasized the need for strict precautions.

He took a few steps closer and glanced at the man.

The other person seemed unable to withstand his gaze, subconsciously shrinking their neck and unconsciously covering their chest with their hand.

"Search him."

Liang Yi gave the order in a deep voice.

The militiamen immediately stepped forward, and the man, who was trying to struggle, was held down firmly.

Soon, they found several tiny folded drawings and a small roll of film wrapped in oil paper in the inner pocket of his clothes.

The drawing clearly showed a simplified topographical map of several important nearby facilities. Although the contents of the film were not clear, Liang Yi had a feeling that this thing was not simple.

"Take him away and keep him under strict guard."

Liang Yi's face turned ashen; the situation was more serious than he had imagined.

Upon hearing that Liang Yi had made the decision, the militiaman nodded and led the man away.

After everyone left, Liang Yi picked up the drawings and carefully examined them by the light of a flashlight, trying to find more clues.

Just then, his gaze fell on the corner of one of the drawings.

There was a very inconspicuous ink stain there, which, upon closer inspection, looked like half a blurry fingerprint.

The shape of the fingerprint, especially the little finger joint, gave Liang Yi a strange sense of familiarity.

His mind flashed back to the hand Wang Weiguo had shown during their earlier argument.

Wang Weiguo's right little finger has a noticeable indentation at the knuckle due to an injury he sustained in his early years.

Most noticeably, the indentation is crescent-shaped.

So it was easy to recognize, and Liang Yi was also startled by his own thought.

Wang Weiguo... How could that be?

How could he be involved with spies? Even if Wang Weiguo is stupid or wicked, he knows that getting involved in this kind of thing is a death sentence.

Liang Yi said nothing and calmly put away the blueprints.

The rain suddenly intensified, with large raindrops pounding on the ground with a pattering sound.

Liang Yi held the black umbrella in his hand, his thin lips pressed tightly together.

He didn't go home immediately, but went to the camp office and stayed there until very late.

He repeatedly examined the documents and blueprints that were laid out on the table.

Wang Weiguo has indeed been acting strangely lately, always sneaking around, and his hostility towards him is becoming increasingly undisguised.

Thinking of Wang Weiguo's previous situation, Liang Yi took a deep breath and leaned back.

His slender fingers curled up and tapped on the table one tap at a time.

Did he really embark on this path of no return in order to bring me down, or for some other reason?

Thinking of this, Liang Yi's face darkened.

This matter concerns national security, and no matter how Wang Weiguo targets him, he cannot be ambiguous about it. After much deliberation, Liang Yi decided to go to Wang Weiguo first and give him a warning.

He knew that Wang Weiguo was narrow-minded and suspicious, and that directly pointing it out might backfire. He could only try to subtly persuade him to stop before it was too late and confess on his own initiative.

If he is destined to go down a dark path, then Liang Yi will not tolerate it any longer.

Liang Yi took the umbrella and walked towards Wang Weiguo's house.

He deliberately avoided the main road and walked along the ridges between the fields, because the rain was so heavy that the path had become muddy.

As he approached Wang Wei's house, he saw a dark figure flash past behind the house, moving somewhat nervously.

Liang Yi's heart was in his throat, and he quietly followed them.

By the dim light, Liang Yi could make out the figure.

The dark figure was Wang Weiguo. He seemed to have just returned from outside, and he was soaking wet. He was furtively prying open the woodpile and stuffing something inside.

"Weiguo!"

Just then, Liang Yi suddenly spoke up.

Wang Weiguo was startled and turned around abruptly, his face drained of color.

Liang Yi saw fear instantly fill Wang Weiguo's eyes.

"Liang...Liang Yi?! You...what are you doing here?"

His voice was trembling, and his hands unconsciously pushed the thing he had just inserted even deeper.

Liang Yi approached step by step, rainwater trickling down the edge of the umbrella.

His gaze was sharp as a knife as he stared intently at Wang Weiguo: "The militia arrested a suspicious person in the eastern district and found some things on him."

He paused deliberately, observing Wang Weiguo's reaction.

Upon hearing this, Wang Weiguo's eyes widened suddenly.

“Wang Weiguo, considering we’re from the same battalion, I’m advising you.”

Liang Yi's voice carried a final reminder: "Some things, it's not too late to pull back from the brink. Taking the initiative to confess and seeking leniency is always better than..."

"you shut up!"

Liang Yi's calm and composed words made Wang Weiguo feel like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

"Liang Yi! I knew it! I knew you didn't like me and wanted to ruin me! You just wanted to frame me! You wanted to completely crush me so you could be the only one in the limelight, right?!"

He pointed at Liang Yi, his fingers trembling violently with excitement.

"You're better than me at farming, you've always ostracized me in the team, and now you want to use these underhanded tricks to harm me! Report me? No way!"

Wang Weiguo's logic had been completely distorted by fear. He was convinced that Liang Yi's presence there late at night meant he had solid evidence to arrest him.

To him, Liang Yi's warning only confirmed his intention to report him.

"Wang Weiguo, calm down, that's not what I meant."

Liang Yi tried to explain, but Wang Weiguo wouldn't listen at all.
"That's not what I meant! You're kidding me!"

Wang Weiguo's eyes were bloodshot, and his face was contorted with a desperate ferocity.

"Liang Yi! You forced me into this situation! You've driven me to this point!"

He roared, his voice sounding particularly shrill in the rainy night.

Just as Liang Yi tried to approach him, a fierce glint flashed in Wang Weiguo's eyes, and he suddenly pulled out a sharp knife that was hidden in the woodpile, its blade gleaming coldly.

That was the dagger he usually used for self-defense.

You want me dead? I'll let you die first!

Wang Weiguo completely lost his mind, overwhelmed by fear and long-suppressed jealousy.

He howled, gripping the dagger in both hands, and pounced on Liang Yi like a mad beast.

Seeing Wang Weiguo's actions, Liang Yi took a few steps back to avoid him. It was clear that he wanted to fight to the death with him.

"Let's both die! Neither of us will survive!"
