Chapter 180 Old Friends and Acquaintances Meet Again

Liang Yi walked over quickly and shook hands with Li Weiguo.

Men, when they meet, act just like women, with endless things to say.

Not to mention, they haven't seen each other for over a decade.

An Min politely nodded and greeted Li Weiguo.

Once in the car, Li Weiguo drove while introducing them to the changes in the city.

"Look, this street used to be a dirt road, and it would be all mud when it rained. Now it has been paved with asphalt, and so many shops have been built on both sides."

That square in front used to be our production and construction corps' threshing ground, but now it's been turned into a public square. Lots of people dance there in the evenings!

Looking out the window, Anmin was filled with emotion.

Back when she and Liang Yi were here, there was only one main street in the city, and the most prosperous place was a supply and marketing cooperative. You needed ration coupons to buy things.

The Northwest today is no longer the barren and backward place it once was; it is now brimming with life and vitality.

When they arrived at Li Weiguo's house, Li Weiguo's wife had already prepared a table full of dishes.

Big plate chicken, hand-pulled mutton, and oil-splashed noodles are all characteristic delicacies of Northwest China.

"Try it! I bought this lamb at the market this morning, it's very fresh!"

Li Weiguo's wife enthusiastically served them food.

"Back when you were in the army, you never got to eat such good food. Now that life is better, you should make sure to eat well!"

During the meal, Li Weiguo talked to them about his old comrades-in-arms.

"Old Zhang now runs a farm in XJ, where he grows a lot of cotton. I visited him last year; the farm is huge and fully mechanized."

Xiao Li returned to Beijing and became a leader in a state-owned enterprise. He even said at the class reunion two years ago that he wanted to get together with you all.

As An Min and Liang Yi listened, they reminisced about the events of those years.

Those difficult yet joyful years are the most precious memories of their lives.

Over the next few days, Li Weiguo took them to the old site of the former military camp.

The site has now been converted into a memorial hall, which displays farm tools, photos, documents, and the kettles and lunchboxes they used back then.

There were also some older weapons, and some items funded by Big Brother.

Looking at these things, Anmin's eyes welled up with tears.

Liang Yi put his arm around her and they reminisced about the past together.

After leaving the memorial hall, Liang Yi suggested going to see Political Commissar Xu, but noticed that Li Weiguo looked rather unwell.

"Political Commissar Xu... was not in good health last year and was bedridden. Director Yang took care of him."

"Oh, right, Xu Dongjun is back to help too."

Upon hearing Li Weiguo mention Xu Dongjun, An Min and Liang Yi exchanged a glance.

Even after all these years, neither Xu Dongjun nor Liang Yi can forget the time he reported Liang Yi.

But Political Commissar Xu and Director Yang are like second parents to them, so it wouldn't be right not to go and see them.

Besides, once she returned to the Northwest, Anmin still wanted to visit her aunt, Qin Shulan.

Liang Yi unconsciously looked at An Min, his eyes filled with conflict.

An Min gently patted the back of his hand and comforted him, "No matter what, let's go see Political Commissar Xu first. We must not forget his kindness to us."

Li Weiguo was driving, and there was a moment of silence in the car.

Not long after, the car stopped in front of a hospital.

Upon entering the ward, one sees Political Commissar Xu lying on the bed, his face pale, his once upright figure now somewhat hunched.

Director Yang sat on the edge of the bed, carefully tucking the blanket around Political Commissar Xu. Most of his hair had turned gray.

"Old leader!"

Liang Yi strode forward, his voice slightly choked. Political Commissar Xu slowly opened his eyes, and a glimmer of light flashed in his eyes when he saw Liang Yi and An Min.

He moved his lips, his voice weak: "Liang Yi... An Min... you've come..."

Just then, the ward door was pushed open, and a middle-aged man in a suit walked in; it was Xu Dongjun.

When he saw Liang Yi and An Min, his expression instantly became complicated, showing surprise, embarrassment, and a hint of guilt.

"Brother Liang Yi, Sister An Min..."

He called out tentatively, his voice sounding somewhat unnatural.

Liang Yi did not respond, but just stared at him intently.

An Min gently tugged at Liang Yi's arm and whispered, "Dong Jun, it's been a long time. Come back and spend more time with your uncle and aunt."

Xu Dongjun nodded, walked to the other side of the hospital bed, handed Director Yang a glass of water, and said in a low voice, "Mom, let me take care of Dad, you rest for a while."

Director Yang looked at the scene before him and sighed: "What happened back then is all in the past. Dongjun was young and ignorant at the time, and he regretted it later, always saying sorry to you."

Hearing his mother's words, Xu Dongjun lowered his head even further, his voice filled with apology: "Brother Liang Yi, Sister An Min, I was wrong back then. I shouldn't have reported you in a moment of confusion. I've felt terrible about it all these years..."

Liang Yi remained silent for a long time before slowly speaking: "Let's not talk about the past. The most important thing now is to let Political Commissar Xu recover properly."

His tone was calm, but An Min could sense that the resentment in his heart had not completely disappeared; he had simply chosen to put it aside for the sake of Political Commissar Xu.

After spending more than an hour in the ward, Liang Yi and An Min helped Director Yang tidy up the room.

He gave Xu Dongjun a few more instructions on how to take care of Political Commissar Xu before getting up to say goodbye.

As Liang Yi walked out of the hospital, he let out a long sigh of relief, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders.

"Next, let's go see Auntie."

Anmin said with a smile.

Over the years, Anmin and her aunt Qin Shulan have maintained correspondence.

Qin Shulan divorced Wei Yaozong years ago and has been living alone ever since.

After leaving Wei Yaozong, Qin Shulan seemed like a completely different person.

No longer timid and submissive, I can now enjoy a more relaxed and carefree life every day.

A smile appeared on Liang Yi's face when Qin Shulan was mentioned.

The two got into the car and drove towards the aunt's house.

My aunt's house is in an old neighborhood. When I opened the door, Qin Shulan was sitting in the yard picking vegetables.

When she saw Anmin, she didn't recognize her at first, until Anmin called out "Auntie".

She immediately put down the vegetables in her hand, walked quickly forward, grabbed Anmin's hand, and her eyes instantly reddened.

"Minmin, my good child, I've been waiting for you to come back!"

Anmin hugged her aunt, and tears streamed down her face.

"Auntie, I miss you so much."

Qin Shulan led An Min and Liang Yi into the house. The furnishings were simple, but the house was clean and tidy.

She busied herself pouring water and getting fruit for the two of them, constantly asking them about their lives over the years.

"I'm relieved that you're all doing well now."

Qin Shulan looked at the two of them with a gratified smile on her face.

"Seeing you all doing well makes me happier than anything else."

"Why didn't Si'an and Shouye come? Did you leave the two children home alone?"

Qin Shulan looked behind them and, not seeing Si'an and Shouye, asked a question.

"Auntie, they're in college now, they're not little kids anymore."
