Chapter 158 Li Hongmei's Confession

When Li Laonian heard Zhang Jianjun's words, he was stunned.

"You're talking nonsense! If it weren't for Li Hongmei, things wouldn't have turned out like this! I don't care, you have to come up with the money, or I won't let you off the hook!"

Hearing Li Laonian's words, Zhang Jianjun sneered, "Give me money? Why should I give you money?"

They suddenly appeared and shouted at the neighbors that they were heartless and ungrateful, and now they want money from them?

"Why should I? Because this whole thing started because of her!"

Li Laonian raised his voice and pointed at Li Hongmei.

"If she hadn't cruelly pushed someone, would my wife have been run over by a motorcycle? If you don't pay up today, I'm not leaving!"

He started to sit down on the ground, but was pulled back by a neighbor who was watching the commotion.

"Oh, sir, you can't say that. Everyone saw it just now. It was your wife who went to rob the money first."

"That's right, Brother Zhang and his wife are really kind. If it were anyone else, they would have kicked you out long ago."

Everyone's not stupid; they basically understood the whole story.

They simply wanted to extort money, and when that failed, they resorted to robbery.

They've reaped what they sowed.

"That's Li Hongmei's fault too! If she had given us the money earlier, none of this would have happened."

Li Laonian continued speaking unreasonably, no longer caring about Zhao Caihua's situation.

If we send someone to the hospital, the money will just keep flowing out like water.

Zhao Caihua lay on the ground, trembling with pain. Hearing this, she groaned, "Money...give me money for treatment...otherwise I'll haunt you even after I die..."

Zhang Jianjun frowned even more, took out a cigarette case from his pocket, and lit one.

Amidst the swirling smoke, his eyes were as cold as ice: "I'll say it again, no money. If you want to cause trouble, go to the police station and see what the officers have to say."

Upon hearing this, Li Laonian's arrogance immediately diminished.

His greatest fear in life was those in uniform, but looking at Zhao Caihua groaning in pain on the ground, he was unwilling to let it go like that.

Just then, the young man who had been riding the motorcycle earlier ran over with two policemen.

He pointed at Li Laonian and Zhao Caihua, and stammered to the police, "Officer, it was them. They suddenly rushed into the middle of the road, and I didn't have time to brake..."

The police officer knelt down to examine Zhao Caihua's injuries and then questioned the neighbors.

After hearing the whole story, one of the older policemen stood up and looked at Li Laonian.

“Old man, it’s obvious that you were in the wrong first. They didn’t want to give you money, so you threw a tantrum and even tried to rob them, which led to this situation.”

"But, but she's so badly injured..."

Old Li still wanted to argue.

Even if the injuries are serious, they must be sent to the hospital first.

The police interrupted him: "You'll have to figure out the medical expenses yourselves. If you don't have the money, you can borrow from relatives and friends. If that doesn't work, we'll help you contact the civil affairs department to see if you can apply for subsidies."

"But trying to extort money from others is absolutely unacceptable."

Li Laonian was completely at a loss. He slumped to the ground and watched as the nurses lifted Zhao Caihua onto a stretcher. Tears finally streamed down his face.

He then realized that he had truly failed this time.

Zhang Jianjun watched as Zhao Caihua was carried away, then glanced at Li Hongmei, whose face was pale beside him, and stubbed out his cigarette: "Let's go home."

Li Hongmei nodded, her steps unsteady as she followed him home.

The harrowing scene from just now replayed in her mind like a movie. She knew that although Zhao Caihua was hateful, her current predicament was ultimately her fault.

When they got home, Zhang Jianjun poured her a glass of hot water: "Don't think too much about it, it's not your fault."

Li Hongmei took the water glass and knelt down on the ground before Zhang Jianjun could react.

"I'm sorry, Jianjun, I didn't tell you about this. I've made you lose face in front of others."

Seeing Li Hongmei like this, Zhang Jianjun quickly reached out and pulled her: "Hongmei, is this the kind of person I am in your heart?"

"She is her, and you are you. What she did cannot be attributed to you."

Zhang Jianjun and Li Hongmei have been together for so many years and have a child together, so there's no reason for him to divorce Li Hongmei.

But what about my own parents...?

No sooner had he finished speaking than the door was flung open, and Zhang Jianjun's parents walked in.

"Li Hongmei, you jinx!"

The speaker was Zhang Jianjun's mother, who was also known for her fiery temper at the entrance of the alley.

Zhang Jianjun's mother, Zhang Panlan, was still clutching the scallions she had just bought from the market; the lush green leaves swayed violently with her movements.

"How could our Zhang family have married such a troublemaker! We'd barely had a few days of peace and quiet before you brought this awful mess to our doorstep. Who knows what the neighbors will say about us behind our backs!"

Li Hongmei knelt on the ground, her head bowed even lower, her shoulders trembling slightly.

Zhang Jianjun pulled her up and shielded her behind him, saying, "Mom, what are you saying? Hongmei is also a victim; this has nothing to do with her."

"It doesn't matter?"

Zhang's mother threw the vegetables in her hand onto the ground.

"If it weren't for her unreliable relative, would this whole farce have happened? I think she's up to no good and wants to ruin our family!"

Zhang Jianjun's father, who had been silent until now, squatted down with a stern face to pick up the vegetables on the ground: "Alright, that's enough."

"You're underestimating me?"

Zhang's mother immediately turned to her husband: "Look at the way the neighbors are looking at us! Jianjun finally worked his way up to a team leader at the factory, and now look what's happened, she's ruined it all!"

Li Hongmei suddenly raised her head, her eyes red-rimmed: "Mom, I really didn't know they would come and cause trouble, I..."

"You do not know?"

Zhang's mother sneered and stepped forward, pointing her finger at her nose.

"I think you're just pretending to be stupid! If you hadn't begged us in tears, saying your uncle and aunt were pitiful, would we have let you help them out from time to time? Now look what's happened, you've raised a bunch of ungrateful wretches who are turning around and biting us!"

"What uncle and aunt? They're actually your biological parents!"

Zhang Jianjun led Li Hongmei toward the sofa: "Mom, Hongmei is already in enough pain, please don't add fuel to the fire."

He turned to look at Li Hongmei: "You go back to your room and rest first. I'll take care of things here."

Li Hongmei shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks: "Jianjun, Mom is right, I've dragged you all down with me."

She looked at Zhang's mother and said, "Mom, blame me if you must. Don't get upset. I will never interfere in their affairs again."

What's the point of saying this now?

Zhang's mother's voice turned shrill: "I'm telling you, Li Hongmei, this isn't over! Either you get rid of those jinxes, or you..."

"mom!"

Zhang Jianjun interrupted her sharply: "Are you only satisfied when you've broken up this family? Hongmei has been married to me for so many years, don't you know how much she's done for this family?"
