Chapter 15, Part 15: Slaughtering the Rat

……

On the edge of Bocheng Anjie, at the foot of a small hill surrounded by rice paddies and shrubs, weeds sway, and in the instant the wind blows, one can almost smell the strange activity hidden beneath the soil.

Chen Hao and his two companions stood in front of a cave entrance, which was nearly a meter in diameter. The surrounding soil was loose, showing clear signs of frequent entry and exit. The faint bluish-green demon-finding powder extended clearly into the depths of the black cave, as if guiding them to a path leading to the lair.

"Finally found it." Zhang Xiaohou breathed a sigh of relief, a little sweat beading on his forehead. "If it weren't for this thing, we probably would have been sitting in the fields until the autumn harvest."

Mo Fan crouched down and shone his flashlight inside. It was pitch black and winding, with no end in sight.

"What do we do now? Wait and see?"

Chen Hao shook his head, thinking that would take an unknown amount of time.

"I heard from that old hunter that giant-eyed gorillas love to eat strong-smelling offal. Monkey, go and buy some chicken or pork and beef offal, let's see if we can lure it out."

“That’s a good idea.” Zhang Xiaohou nodded. “Wait for me, I’ll get it done in ten minutes.”

In no time, Zhang Xiaohou returned with ten pounds of animal offal, which smelled strongly of various kinds and was obviously still fresh.

After crushing it, the smell became even stronger. Then, it was sprinkled on the edge of the cave, and Zhang Xiaohou used wind magic to continuously pump fresh air into it. The fishy smell quickly spread in through the cave passage, like an invisible bait line being slowly released, penetrating deep into the rat's nest.

Chen Hao and the other two had already scattered and hidden themselves, each finding cover, their eyes fixed on the dark cave entrance, and the air seemed to become a little heavier.

Time passed by, and at first there was no sound. But as the stench grew stronger, suddenly a very faint rustling sound came from inside the cave, as if something was scratching or moving underground.

"They're here!" Zhang Xiaohou whispered, his voice tinged with nervousness.

Mo Fan immediately mobilized the fire element star points, and the fire element star orbit quietly gathered in his palm, ready to launch a fireball at any time.

Chen Hao slowly drew back the bowstring, and the fine iron arrow reflected a cold, chilling light under the sunlight.

Suddenly, a dark shadow darted out of the cave entrance—a giant, gray-furred ape-rat with eerie red eyes leaped out, its nose twitching wildly in the air, clearly attracted by the stench.

"Shhh!!"

"call!!"

Without the slightest hesitation, Chen Hao aimed and released the bowstring. The fine iron arrow, like a silver lightning bolt, pierced through the air and aimed straight at the ape's head!

Almost simultaneously, Mo Fan's fire burst forth.

The next second—

"puff--!"

The arrow pierced the giant-eyed ape's head accurately and exited from behind, while the fireball that followed exploded on its body, flames billowing and creating a scorching wave of fire!
The demon rat that had just leaped out of its burrow didn't even have time to scream before it was torn apart and burned in a series of blows, crashing heavily to the ground, twitching a few times, and then becoming completely still.

"Well done, mission accomplished!" Zhang Xiaohou excitedly pumped his fist.

"How was it? Did it explode with essence?" Chen Hao asked Mo Fan impatiently.

"It's not that simple. It's too dark. It looks like just a remnant of a soul." Mo Fan said, stepping forward to collect the remnant.

However, at that moment, a soft "rustling" sound came from deep within the cave again.

"Hmm? There's another one?" Zhang Xiaohou frowned.

"No...there's more than one." Chen Hao's expression suddenly changed, realizing something was wrong. They had made a serious mistake—

The tunnels of the giant-eyed apes are intricate and interconnected, and there are already many giant-eyed apes on the edge of Bo City's borders; the tunnels they dig are basically all linked. Just now, they used wind magic to flood the depths of their burrows with a stench, effectively inviting every single giant-eyed ape in the entire area!

Mo Fan and Zhang Xiaohou also reacted instantly.

"Damn it, we've lured a rat into a trap!" Mo Fan cursed under his breath.

"Quickly, block the entrance!" Zhang Xiaohou shouted.

But it's too late.

One, two, three giant-eyed ape-rats emerged from the burrow in succession, their red eyes flashing with ferocity and hunger. Meanwhile, a rustling sound approached from afar, clearly indicating that a swarm of more demonic rats was on its way!
The atmosphere in the air began to feel oppressive and dangerous.

"Prepare for battle!" Chen Hao gritted his teeth, put away the iron bow, took down the two-meter-long greatsword and gripped it tightly with both hands, his eyes becoming sharp.

The pulley compound bow is not suitable for the current chaotic situation. Although it is powerful and accurate, its drawbacks are also very obvious—the loading process is complicated, the firing rate is low, and it is far less fast than a traditional bow that can be nocked and fired immediately.

In a real melee, when others can fire two or three arrows in succession, a pulley compound bow may only be able to fire one.

In this situation, the greatsword is his most reliable weapon at this moment.

At this moment, he charged forward fully armed, confident that the giant-eyed gorilla could not break through his defenses.

The three giant-eyed ape-rat's figures overlapped, its sharp fangs gleaming coldly in the sunlight, its scarlet eyes fixed on the oppressive metal can in front of it.

The next second, the scarlet eyes suddenly lit up, and three scarlet beams shot out, hitting Chen Hao's thick breastplate directly.

"boom--!"

Three scarlet beams of light struck Chen Hao's heavy armor almost simultaneously, producing a deafening explosion, sparks flying, and the air itself being scorched and distorted.

The ground beneath Chen Hao's feet was shattered, creating three cracks. He himself staggered back two steps before regaining his balance.

"Hiss... I almost forgot this thing can also use magic." Chen Hao frowned.

Although the heavy armor blocked the impact, he still felt a tightness in his chest, as if he had been hit hard by a hammer.

Fortunately, I have this armor, otherwise I would probably have had to expend a lot of battle qi to resist it. If I had to rely solely on my physical body to withstand it, I would probably have been seriously injured.

"Fuck him!"

"Fire! Burn bones!" Mo Fan roared, and an even larger fireball flew out of his hand, the flames slithering like snakes toward a giant-eyed ape-rat.

Zhang Xiaohou also reacted quickly. Although he had no combat ability, he used his speed to constantly harass the giant-eyed ape after using the Wind Track.

Chen Hao seized the opportunity, strode forward, and thrust his greatsword forward. The sharp tip of the greatsword pierced directly into the eyeball of a giant-eyed ape-rat, penetrating straight through its body.

The giant-eyed ape let out a shrill scream, its scarlet eyes bursting open instantly, splattering blood and slime everywhere. Its massive body thrashed wildly on the ground, clearly beyond saving.

Chen Hao swiftly drew his greatsword, dark red blood flowing down the blade in a terrifying manner.

The other giant-eyed gorilla was temporarily unable to act aggressively after being electrocuted and burned by Mo Fan, so Chen Hao immediately turned his attention to the one chasing the monkey.

The giant-eyed ape-rat that was chasing Zhang Xiaohou was in a rage. Although Zhang Xiaohou narrowly avoided a fatal attack by using his wind-tracking ability, his speed was no match for the long chase. He stopped and almost fell over.
