Chapter 94 Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Huang Ying was still complaining about her mother carrying too many things when she left the house.

But once she got to the place, she felt it was nice to have a sweet little girl by her side to talk to.

Every now and then, they get fed all sorts of snacks, so working doesn't feel boring at all.

Seeing how much her mother enjoyed it, Gao Qinghe rewarded herself with a stick of glutinous rice.

She knew it; no one could resist the allure of snacks!

At the foot of the mountain, the construction team responsible for repairing the village's water supply was already working diligently with the villagers' help.

With so many people from other villages coming, the village was very lively.

The sound of everyone gossiping carried all the way up the mountain.

Gao Qinghe listened intently for a while, and the conversation was mostly about how the young man was physically strong and whether the construction team leader was looking for a wife.

Occasionally, she would interject a few words about her and Jiang Baohai.

Whenever she is mentioned, Secretary Zhou is inevitably brought up again, saying that Mrs. Zhong was furious yesterday and almost beat up the pigs in her house.

This morning, as if determined to get revenge, Zhong sent her second daughter-in-law to the convenience store to buy soy sauce.

Chunfang said proudly that in a few days, Zhou Zhenghua and his girlfriend, who is a teacher at the county's No. 1 Middle School, will go to meet his future father-in-law.

I heard that my future father-in-law is a high-ranking official, and his connections are all from the provincial capital.

After that, with the help of her in-laws, her uncle will eventually be transferred to a high-ranking official position in the county town.

Everyone loves a good show, and someone immediately asked:

"Is your family trying to compete with the Gao family to see who can find a better partner?"

Chunfang smiled but didn't say anything, but that was the gist of it.

People secretly began to compare the two families. One group said that the coal boss was rich and Gao Qinghe was beautiful, a perfect match, and that no one in the surrounding villages could find such an outstanding couple.

Another group said, "Power and money, power and money. With power you can have everything. Even the richest coal boss is still a self-employed individual and still has to listen to the officials."

Neither group could win an argument, and the more they talked, the more excited they became, with the content getting increasingly explosive.

Finally, Huang Yanqiu, who was passing by, shouted at them, startling them so much that they thought she had gone mad and hurriedly shushed her.

"Qinghe, what are you doing here!"

When Huang Yanqiu saw Gao Qinghe on the mountain, her jaw almost dropped in surprise.

Gao Qinghe sat on a straw hat under the shade of a tree, playing with a blade of grass in one hand and peeling off a segment of sour orange and putting it in her mouth, looking relaxed and content.

Hearing a surprised voice coming from halfway up the mountain, I raised my hand to shield my eyes and leaned down slightly to look down.

Seeing Huang Yanqiu's silly grin, he smiled and waved to her.

"Come up and play!"

Huang Yanqiu nodded excitedly. She drove the two yellow oxen, one big and one small, from the Zheng family up the mountain and let them graze on the slope.

Carrying a cloth bag and a machete, he rushed to Gao Qinghe in a few strides.

The steep slope that had nearly killed Gao Qinghe was brought up by him without her even breaking a sweat.

Gao Qinghe handed the remaining half of the orange to Huang Yanqiu, her eyes fixed on the cloth bag tied around Huang Yanqiu's waist.

Huang Ying warned, "Those oranges are very sour, don't eat them."

Huang Yanqiu smiled and called her aunt, then shook her head to indicate that she wasn't afraid.

Peel off the skin and stuff half of it directly into your mouth.

Gao Qinghe frowned and looked at Huang Yanqiu's reaction with curiosity.

"Yue!"

Huang Yanqiu's face scrunched up from the sourness, and she spat out the incredibly sour orange from her mouth.

After finally vomiting it all out, I quickly took out the sweet potato from my pocket and took a couple of bites to use its sweetness to mask the sourness.

"How did you manage to eat that? It's so sour, it's killing me!"

Huang Yanqiu looked at Gao Qinghe, who was laughing so hard she was clutching her stomach, with a puzzled expression.

Gao Qinghe gasped for breath, "Use your brain and think about it. If it were really that delicious, how could I have eaten for so long and still have more than half left for you?"

Huang Yanqiu: "."

Huang Ying couldn't help but laugh. This silly girl. "Here, have some good food to make up for it."

Gao Qinghe handed over the cloth bag that her grandmother had packed for her.

Huang Yanqiu's eyes lit up with surprise.

He happily pulled out two packets of spicy strips and a handful of glutinous rice strips, along with a can of Jianlibao (a popular Chinese herbal tea), and sat down on the grass next to her, eating heartily.

"They were talking badly about you down the mountain, but when I heard them and yelled at them, none of them dared to utter a sound," Huang Yanqiu said smugly.

Gao Qinghe nodded, indicating that she had seen everything.

Huang Yanqiu finished two packs of spicy strips in no time, feeling so good that she wanted to stand up and dance.

He finished half a can of Jianlibao, dug a small hole to put the bottle down, got up and ran into the woods to collect a bundle of firewood.

She skillfully started a fire and put the sweet potatoes she had brought on it to roast.

He instructed Gao Qinghe, "You watch the fire. I'll go chop two bundles of firewood first, and we'll eat them together in a bit. These sweet potatoes are so sweet and fluffy!"

He got up, took the wood-chopping knife, but was still a little worried, so he waved to Gao Qinghe, who was standing by the fire.

"Forget it, just stay over there so you don't burn your hands. Call me when the fire is almost out and I'll take care of it."

Only then did he take his knife and enter the forest.

Gao Qinghe sat happily to the side, waiting to eat roasted sweet potatoes.

Huang Yanqiu worked exceptionally well, quickly chopping two bundles of firewood, binding them together with vines, then carrying a thicker piece of firewood as a shoulder pole, and proudly carrying it down the mountain to the roadside.

Without even taking a breath, he rushed up to add firewood to the fire and stir-fry sweet potatoes.

The aroma of roasted sweet potatoes is already wafting out; there are two in total.

Huang Yanqiu peeled one for Gao Qinghe, wrapped it in a leaf, and handed it to her, saying, "Be careful, it's hot."

She and Huang Ying were the last ones left to separate.

Huang Ying opened her lunchbox to show that she had some, and told Huang Yanqiu to eat one herself.

Seeing how dark and thin the child was, I decided to share half of the food I brought with her.

The dishes I made this morning didn't have any meat, but the fried baby potatoes were still quite delicious.

Huang Yanqiu said, "I'll help my aunt finish planting this plot of land in a little while."

Knowing that she was embarrassed, Huang Ying nodded and did not refuse, gesturing for her to eat quickly.

Huang Yanqiu felt that her appetite was too big. She had eaten 70% full for breakfast, but now she was hungry again.

Grandma Tian's cooking skills are renowned in the village. Even though they both use potatoes, Huang Yanqiu thinks Gao's potatoes are more fragrant.

Seeing her wolfing down her food, Gao Qinghe reminded her, "Eat slowly, it's not good for your stomach to eat like that."

Huang Yanqiu smiled sheepishly and slowed down.

However, habits formed from childhood cannot be changed overnight, and soon they revert to wolfing down their food.

Gao Qinghe didn't say anything more to her, her brows slightly furrowed.

Her uncle, Mr. Huang, was an incompetent man, yet his family kept having children one after another.

With so many people needing to eat, no one can possibly get enough to eat.

When Huang Yanqiu was a child, she did the most chores and was always the last to sit down to eat.

But she was never given a separate portion of the food on the table.

She went hungry several times before realizing she had to go home early and rush to the table to grab food.

In order to eat a few more bites of food, I was forced to learn to eat as quickly as possible.

This habit has persisted to this day, and even though living conditions have improved compared to before, it has not changed.

Looking at the fragrant roasted sweet potato in her hand, Gao Qinghe suddenly felt it had lost its flavor.

Huang Yanqiu's eyes immediately swept over, "Are you full?"

Gao Qinghe had just nodded when Huang Yanqiu took the roasted sweet potato from her hand and ate it in a few bites.

"You really are..." Gao Qinghe didn't know what to say. She was a little angry, so she hit her with the grass she had just broken.
