Chapter 293 A Letter from Over There
"Xiao He, your dad's here!"
The mother-in-law's delighted voice came from the courtyard.
Gao Qinghe, who was practicing yoga with her daughter on the bed, stopped in surprise, picked up her daughter and ran out.
"Oh dear, in-law, you've come all this way, why are you being so polite!"
Gao Chongyi brought in a large bag of rice and a burlap sack of fresh cabbages, waving to his mother-in-law.
"There's nothing special, just some rice and some vegetables that her grandma grows."
Qi Lian thought to herself, "You're too kind. We have everything at home. Don't bring it next time. If you want to bring something, tell Xiao Hai in advance so he can pick you up by car. It's too much trouble to take the bus with so much stuff."
"It's no trouble at all. We'll deliver it right to your door. These young people are busy, so don't let them worry about it."
The two politely carried the rice and vegetables into the house.
Gao Qinghe excitedly shouted, "Dad!"
Hearing her mother call for her father, Jiang Qiyue thought it was her father coming home. She turned her little head, but couldn't find anyone familiar, and looked a little confused.
Everyone found it amusing.
Gao Chongyi opened his arms to tease the little one: "Qiyue, do you still remember your grandpa? Come here, let grandpa give you a hug, okay?"
The little guy stared at his grandfather for a while, then hesitantly reached out his little hand.
Gao Chongyi scooped her up in his arms, tossed her around a few times, and suddenly launched her into the air, leaving Jiang Qiyue completely bewildered, her eyes wide open like saucers.
After being tossed twice more, she realized that an adult was playing with her, and then giggled a few times in a very polite manner.
"Dad, what brings you here? Where's Grandma?"
Gao Qinghe took out a tea canister and brewed a cup of hot tea for her father. "Dad, are you cold? Have some hot tea to warm yourself up."
Gao Chongyi shook his head, gesturing for his daughter to put it on the coffee table first. "Your grandma is still in the village. She just sold the pigs and chickens at home, and she packed up some vegetables for me to bring to you."
As she spoke, she placed her little grandson on her lap, and she was able to sit still quite steadily.
"Our little Qiyue can sit by herself now!" Gao Chongyi exclaimed with delight.
However, it didn't last long. The little guy's soft little body started to tilt and fall backward, and his two little hands instinctively gripped his grandfather's fingers.
Feeling the considerable force on his fingers, Gao Chongyi couldn't help but laugh and quickly picked up his grandson.
Qi Lianxin invited her in-laws to have lunch at her home. Gao Chongyi smiled and agreed. She then instructed Gao Qinghe to take good care of her father and went to the kitchen to prepare the meal.
Only the father and daughter, along with a drowsy Jiang Qiyue, remained in the hall.
Gao Qinghe gestured for her father to give her the child, but Gao Chongyi couldn't bear to part with her. He held his little grandson in his arms and coaxed her to sleep.
Gao Chongyi suddenly said, "A letter has arrived from over there. They want me to take you all over to celebrate the New Year with them."
Gao Qinghe paused in her act of covering her daughter with the blanket, looked at her father in surprise, and asked for confirmation:
"What about Grandpa?"
"Hmm." Gao Chongyi nodded slightly, but there was no joy on his face.
Gao Qinghe was stunned. She had never met anyone from the Gao family in her previous life.
She didn't know if her father was intentionally hiding it or if the Gao family had simply forgotten about this son, but she had never heard her father mention that side of the family.
In my past life, I only recognized my mother's relatives from a young age, so I didn't care about my father's relatives who were practically non-existent. My siblings and I didn't care at all.
But now, they've received a letter inviting them to spend the New Year together. Gao Qinghe feels like it's a magic tale.
Gao Qinghe carried her sleeping daughter into the room, put her on the bed, covered her with a blanket, and then came out.
She gathered her thoughts in her room and decided to ask her father for his opinion first.
"Do you want to go? Where are they now? How far are they from Qing County?"
Fearing her father might have reservations, Gao Qinghe said directly, "If Dad wants to go, we'll all go with you."
"If it's just the two of you, Grandma and Jiang Yu, you can go back to your uncle's house in Qijia Village to celebrate the New Year together." Gao Chongyi looked at his daughter with satisfaction, then shook his head and said, "I don't want to go."
“Then let’s not go, let’s just stay home for the New Year,” Gao Qinghe immediately replied.
Upon hearing this, Gao Chongyi breathed a sigh of relief, and a smile returned to his handsome middle-aged face.
Excitedly, she suggested, "Then you and Xiaohai should invite your mother-in-law and sister-in-law to our house for the New Year this year."
Gao Qinghe couldn't make the decisions for her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and said she would ask them later.
However, she and Jiang Baohai can bring the child back.
Gao Chongyi was most looking forward to his granddaughter coming. Before leaving after having lunch at the Jiang family's house, he repeatedly reminded them to remember to take the child back with them.
Gao Qinghe said with a laugh, "I know, unless there's heavy snow and the roads are blocked, I'll walk back anyway."
"By the way, Dad, how long do you plan to stay in the city?"
"It will take four or five days, mainly because we are waiting for your mother. The workers will not be able to get a break for a few more days."
The snow hasn't come yet this year. Without snow or rain, the construction site can't stop. Plus, with the tight schedule, the workers won't be able to get a holiday until the 19th.
Gao Qinghe nodded to indicate that she understood, and then said to her father, "If there's nothing else, I'll take the child back to the village by myself and spend a few more days with Grandma."
This is wonderful; the old lady will surely be happy to see her great-granddaughter.
"Okay, then we'll come pick you two up when your mother and I get back to the village," Gao Chongyi instructed, still worried.
Gao Qinghe was both amused and exasperated. "Dad, I'm a mother now, but you still treat me like a child."
"You don't need to pick me up. I'll have Jiang Baohai drive me back."
Hearing his daughter say that, Gao Chongyi awkwardly touched the tip of his nose, feeling a little disappointed.
"Then Dad left."
Gao Qinghe followed her father out of Zhao Family Village, watched him enter the town, and then turned to go home.
When Jiang Baohai returned home that evening, Gao Qinghe told her family about her plan to go back to her parents' home for the Spring Festival this year.
Qi Lianxin didn't say no, but her displeasure was written all over her face.
"I'm not going. You can go if you want."
Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival is different from celebrating the Spring Festival. During the Spring Festival, she would go to her daughter-in-law's parents' home with her, because she was afraid that people in the village would gossip.
As for Jiang Yu, since her mother wasn't going, she naturally had to stay as well.
Otherwise, who will offer incense to the ancestors during the New Year's Eve dinner?
Jiang Baohai agreed. In his previous life, Gao Chongyi was the only old man left in the Gao family. He and his wife would go back to the village every year to spend the New Year with his father-in-law. They were used to it.
However, seeing her mother's disapproving look, Jiang Baohai gave her an idea.
"Mom, if you don't want to go back with me and Qinghe, then you can take Xiaoyu to your uncle's house for the New Year. Bring plenty of things with you, otherwise they might not be able to have a good New Year this year."
They were swindled out of all their savings, and nothing of value remained in the house. Fortunately, the rice harvest in the fields in autumn was plentiful, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to afford to eat.
After all, they were his own uncles. Although Jiang Baohai wanted to teach them a lesson, he still found jobs for his two uncles after the autumn harvest.
I can work until at least the Lunar New Year, and that will cover the cost of my children's schooling next year.
As for whether they continue working next year or go back to the village to farm, that's none of his business.
Everyone has their own destiny; he can't possibly take on other people's fates.
Gao Qinghe always mocked him for becoming "loyal and righteous" and taking on too much responsibility as he got older.
But that's because we have so much money we can't spend it all, and we want to give back to our hometown folks.
His career is just starting out, and he still needs the support of his hometown folks. Giving back can wait until later. (End of Chapter)
