Chapter 306 Showdown Time
Chapter 306 Showdown Time
Around 4 p.m., Sheriff George Stacy received a call from his daughter Gwen, who sounded very flustered and wanted him to come out because she had something to do.
"What's wrong, Gwen? Why are you in such a panic?"
"I met Spider-Man, Dad. He said he has something very important to talk to you about. I'll give you the address..."
Spider-Man? Why doesn't Spider-Man come to the NYPD if he has something to do? Even if he's familiar with me, he could just come to me directly. Why does he have to go to Gwen?
As for questions like "why Spider-Man knows Gwen Stacy is George Stacy's daughter," Sheriff George didn't ask any further. Anyway, such interpersonal relationships can be easily investigated. Spider-Man, as an Avenger, can easily obtain such information.
So, feeling puzzled, Sheriff George spoke briefly with his colleagues at the police station and then left the office. The meeting place Spider-Man requested wasn't far, just a few blocks away on the rooftop of an apartment building. He spent over ten minutes getting there, and once he climbed onto the rooftop, he felt quite dissatisfied.
Because his daughter Gwen was also there waiting for him.
"What's wrong with Spider-Man? Why is he leaving Gwen here...?"
As Sheriff Stacy spoke, she walked forward and saw Spider-Man stuck to the outside of a water tank. Spider-Man then leaped down and landed right in front of her. Before she could even complain, Spider-Man swiftly removed his mask, revealing Peter Parker's face.
Sheriff Stacy was immediately shocked.
"Peter?"
“It’s me, Uncle George.”
"Peter Benjamin Parker?!"
"……it's me."
George took a deep breath and rubbed his forehead. "My God, this is unbelievable. It's even more unbelievable than the fact that you and Gwen are dating."
"Um, we're not dating yet..."
“That’s why I said it was even more unbelievable.” Sheriff George finally calmed down and understood why the handwriting left by the early Spider-Man seemed familiar but also quite incredible. “That’s not right, I checked it clearly, your handwriting and Spider-Man’s handwriting are completely different.”
"That's because he writes with his left hand. Dad, Peter can write with both hands, and the handwriting is completely different."
After a moment of stunned silence, Sheriff George came to his senses, nodded, and asked, "Okay, kids, let's put that aside for now. We can talk about this anytime, but Peter, you called me out here not just to tell me your true identity. It's not like you had to call me out for something, right?"
“It’s about Dr. Connors of Osborn Technologies, Uncle George. You probably already know him; he’s become a gigantic monster.” Peter said, nodding at George, before revealing his purpose: “The NYPD will definitely get involved in the investigation, and I roughly know what the Lizardmen are planning, but… well, you could say I’ve seen the future. You might sacrifice yourself while trying to stop the Lizardmen.”
“I understand. Spider-Man can’t persuade Commissioner George Stacy not to risk his life, but perhaps his precious daughter and Peter Parker, whom he’s watched grow up, can.”
Sheriff George smiled wryly, looking at his daughter and Peter, whom he had always treated like a nephew, and asked, "Peter, why did you want to become Spider-Man?"
“Because…” “Because you are helping others, right? You have gained this power, so you want to help.” Sheriff George interrupted Peter: “This morning Gwen asked me why I, as a police inspector, still went out on duty. I said it was just on the side, but I lied. Actually, it’s because I want to do it.”
“When I was a police officer, I would drive my patrol car, patrol the streets, see criminals, stop them, and get a thank you. That's when something was born in my heart. When Gwen’s mother passed away, I took leave. I was considering whether to quit my job to take care of my child, after all, her mother had left behind a considerable insurance payout. But when I walked down the street in my uniform, I missed my police uniform.”
“I walk the streets in my uniform, with a gun. I stop crime, I help mothers find their children, I protect them all. I leave something on my uniform forever, on the streets of this city. I know how corrupt many of my colleagues are, I know how hopeless this city is, but I can’t stop. The NYPD motto is, ‘Loyalty forever,’ and I will be loyal forever.”
Gwen and Peter both fell silent.
He walked over, opened his arms, and hugged the two children. "I know you were worried about me. I'm not a superhero, I don't have superpowers. We're facing hordes of monsters. The number of officers who have been killed or injured in the last few years is more than all the previous years combined..."
"But I won't stop, kids."
George Stacy knew he wouldn't stay in his office directing everything. He released the two children and looked at Peter: "Okay, Peter, what's going to happen?"
"The lizard-like Kurt Connors is very likely to think about turning all the people of New York into lizard people, into his own kind, because these mutant lizards are very intelligent and they will feel lonely."
Sheriff George nodded. A mad scientist, huh? That makes sense. And then what?
"He might use a fogging device to drop it high up in New York and then quickly infect all of New York."
Sheriff George nodded again. "That sounds complicated. And then what?"
“We tested the toughness of his skin. At least theoretically, a .50 caliber machine gun could not penetrate it even after a minute of continuous fire.”
"You fired machine guns at him?"
"No, but I tore off the skin from his entire back."
Sheriff George was silent for two minutes, then couldn't help but sigh: "Okay, watch out for the high ground. You'll need anti-materiel weapons to hit them. And then what?"
"It took him less than three minutes for all his skin to grow back."
"So, if our police find him, we'll need to use anti-materiel weapons for continuous fire, or even machine guns, to suppress him?"
Peter nodded helplessly.
"Okay, I don't know what kind of monsters the Avengers have to fight these days. I'll keep an eye out."
Or maybe the Avengers are some kind of monsters, Sheriff George thought to himself, and then suddenly thought of a very serious question: if Peter really married Gwen in the future, could Gwen handle it?
