Chapter 237 Project Pegasus
What is Project Pegasus?

In short, it is a new type of spacecraft developed by the United States after it won the Cold War. The goal of this device is to enable humans to achieve light-speed travel, and it has been criticized as one of NASA's key methods for securing funding.

It wasn't until last year, when Thor landed in New Mexico and Earth confirmed for the first time the existence of other life in the universe, that Project Pegasus was revived and redefined: a weaponized light-speed technology project. Its aim is to develop a fleet of interstellar warships capable of light-speed travel to defend against the next alien invasion.

"This is Project Pegasus."

Carroll smiled proudly on the bus as she recounted the history and significance of Project Pegasus to the students, exuding confidence and seemingly having great faith in the entire plan. However, Peter remained skeptical. "Putting everything else aside," he said, "this year alone, Earth has been invaded by aliens twice, both times in New York. Your Project Pegasus is practically making no progress."

Moreover, to research light-speed technology, one must at least have the technical capability, right? What, besides the symbiote, has the US government also captured an alien spaceship and is reverse engineering it?

While it's not impossible, it seems quite humorous considering the two alien invasions that occurred this year.

When it was revealed that the US military was organizing these competitions specifically for future scientists, essentially charging money after the fact, many students were dissatisfied. "Who are we? We are the future elite, scientists! And who are you? You're just a bunch of dirty politicians and clueless soldiers, yet you expect us to work for you? Why should we?"
"I bet the Pentagon has some secret gadgets hidden there to scare us. Showing off their cutting-edge technology will fool these nerds."

Peter lowered his voice, which made Gwen and Cindy look at him with confusion. "Aren't you just insulting yourself?"

Actually, no, after all, what bookworm goes out every day?

"Well then, welcome to Puerto Rico, welcome to Project Pegasus!"

That's what they said, but they were actually taken to a hotel.

As the saying goes, it's all about unified management, which means everyone should stay where they can be contacted and not wander off. Accommodation will be arranged uniformly, and so on. And somewhat unexpectedly, each student was assigned a private room.

"In other words... they have all the surveillance and listening equipment, ha, they're just a bunch of high school students."

Peter easily found the surveillance equipment in the room. He then hacked into the equipment and concealed his whereabouts. Perhaps this trip would be incredibly safe, but that didn't stop him from finding the US military's actions annoying, even disgusting.

"So, what exactly are they planning to show us..."

Peter muttered to himself, then suddenly felt a sharp pain between his eyebrows. He looked up at the sky and, for some reason, his spider-sense started beeping. Peter sighed helplessly and released venom to cover his body. It seemed Spider-Man really couldn't rest anywhere.

"Almost all the results of the second phase? You're really bold."

Back at Arecibo Observatory, Carol Danvers was astonished by the director of Project Pegasus's explanation of the open plan. It wasn't just audacious; it was downright reckless: "You should know that many of the projects are still, well, classified, Michael."

"Actually, it's in the undisclosed stage, but it doesn't involve any confidentiality regulations." Michael Rossi, the chief scientist of Project Pegasus, smiled shyly and looked at the "research results" on the side. It was an incredibly ancient spaceship that the US military had excavated from an underground ruin. Also excavated were some architectural remains that were clearly not in a human aesthetic style. Without a doubt, these were all evidence of an extraterrestrial civilization visiting Earth in ancient times.

From those alien spaceships that may be hundreds or thousands of years old, the US government found what it was looking for: an ancient faster-than-light engine. It may have been ancient and outdated to the alien civilization that abandoned the spaceship on Earth, but it was still incredibly advanced to Earthlings.

Carroll leaned against the railing, staring blankly at the old spaceship.

"You keep staring at that spaceship like that, Carol. Want to go up and try it out?"

"I doubt any pilot would refuse the experience of faster-than-light flight. I've talked to you many times about how happy I was when I first flew a supersonic fighter jet into the sky."

Carol shrugged. If possible, she wouldn't want to stay at this observatory and be in charge of security at the research base. She was a pilot, and soaring through the skies was her true calling.

“Perhaps one day you’ll be flying a plane and witness an alien spaceship crash.” Michael smiled, then frowned, noticing something odd on the telescope readings. He continued, glancing at his computer, “And then you’ll encounter a dying alien…”

"Was he wearing a green ring and saying he wanted to give it to me? I've seen Green Lantern." Carol smiled helplessly, then looked at Michael, whose expression was serious: "What's wrong?"

"There was a momentary anomaly in the energy readings, but it's normal now. It was probably just some reading errors."

Michael relaxed his brow and looked at Carol: "Where were we? Oh right, Green Lantern, aren't you looking forward to it?"

"Could there really be a cosmic police organization in our universe? Then why were they nowhere to be seen even after New York was invaded twice?"

"Actually, there are," Michael thought to himself, "but Xandar's rising star team is also very busy."

As the two were talking, the energy readings became abnormal again. This time, it wasn't just a fleeting anomaly. Satellite images clearly captured a small red spaceship appearing outside the Earth via a jump, then breaking through the atmosphere and hurtling towards Earth.

"Okay, yet another UFO intrusion. Let's see where they land..."

Seeing Michael's stiff expression, Carroll had a bad feeling: "Don't tell me it's New York again."

“The good news is, this spaceship isn’t heading towards New York,” Michael said helplessly. “The bad news is, it’s heading towards us.”
