Chapter 290 The Child of the Dungeon

Wu Chengyu then turned and walked out of the fortress, to a large tree several dozen feet away. The operation he had just completed had taken quite a while, and it was already dawn.

Of the three children he had tied to the tree, two were still asleep, but the little wolf cub had its eyes open, coldly surveying its surroundings.

Wu Chengyu quickly lowered them from the tree and woke up the two sleeping children. The little wolf cub remained wary of Wu Chengyu.

"Why did you put us in the tree? Are you trying to hand us over to those man-eating demons?"

"Don't worry, those guys really have turned into monsters. If I hadn't kept you under control just now, those two might have ended up in there too. I don't want to give my teammates any chance to hold me back."

"Let's go. All the villains inside are dead, and your friends are all safe. They were lucky; they haven't been eaten after being captured for two days. Let's go and release them together."

As Wu Chengyu led the three of them toward the fortress, they saw the slaves laboriously carrying the bodies of their companions out of the fortress, preparing to dig a pit deep in the valley where the fortress was located to bury them.

Some slaves found a cart, threw the bandits' mutilated bodies and limbs into it, and prepared to push it out of the fortress and burn it.

The children didn't react much to the corpses; in this chaotic world, corpses were commonplace. However, when they saw the severed limbs and the bloodstains all over the ground, they vomited instantly, even the wolf cubs.

Wu Chengyu felt somewhat relieved. If these three children remained unmoved by such a scene, they would be close to losing their humanity. There was still hope for them now.

The entrance to the castle's underground level was easy to find. Inside were prisons, but there wasn't a single guard. They were probably among the people whose necks Wu Chengyu had just broken.

There were no single cells here, only two slightly larger cells. One of them held more than a dozen children, who were now huddled in a corner. They had heard screams coming from above, but they didn't know what had happened. They were trembling with fear, and some of the younger ones had started to cry.

"Little Deer Sister, Little Cow, Little Stone, we've come to rescue you!" The three children rushed forward as soon as they saw their friends. The two of them shouted happily, while the little wolf cub was a bit coy and didn't say anything, but his eyes were full of excitement.

Upon seeing their companions, the children in the prison rushed over, excitedly shouting through the wooden bars of the cell.

Only the slightly older girl hesitated. She glanced at Wu Chengyu in fear and whispered to the wolf cubs.

"Xiao Hu, Zhu Zi, Li Geda, what brings you three here? Were you also captured? Who is he?"

Of the three children, the one who initially threw stones at Wu Chengyu was called Xiaohu, the one who swung the wooden stick was Zhuzi, and the wolf cub's name was a bit unexpected, actually Li Geda.

Zhu Zi explained, "Don't worry, Sister Little Deer, this is the big brother we met. He's a good person, and he's incredibly capable. He killed all the bad guys outside all by himself. Really, we saw it when we came in. It was just so disgusting."

After hearing Zhu Zi's words, Xiao Lu still looked at Wu Chengyu suspiciously, then looked at Xiao Hu and Li Geda. After receiving an affirmative response, she suddenly knelt down and kowtowed three times to Wu Chengyu.

"Thank you so much, my benefactor, for saving the lives of my brothers. I am willing to repay your kindness by being your servant in my next life."

Girl, your words of gratitude are truly insincere. In the next life, I'll be your ox or your horse. What use are you to me? Wu Chengyu suddenly wanted to touch his face. Now, this handsome face attracts the attention of young women and wives wherever he goes.

Some people even tried to abduct him, a common man, in broad daylight, but it suddenly lost its effect in front of this little girl.

The girl was probably a bit older than the other children. She spoke as if she had seen a bit of the world and could even use idioms. She might even be literate. Clearly, she didn't come from an ordinary family. Her demeanor was relatively composed, and she was obviously the leader of the group of children.

She looked disheveled and covered in grime, her features barely discernible, making it impossible to judge her appearance. Therefore, Wu Chengyu gave up on teaching her a lesson: one cannot repay kindness by talking about the next life, otherwise it would be no different from fraud.

The children inside and outside the prison made a ruckus, chattering away and giving Wu Chengyu a headache, but they managed to explain what had happened. All the children looked at Wu Chengyu with eyes full of admiration.

Zhu Zi and the others tried to get their friends out, but they couldn't open the iron chains on the gate. Helpless, they turned to Wu Chengyu for help.

Wu Chengyu stepped forward, grabbed the iron chain, and with a burst of internal force, immediately snapped it in two.

"Wow!" The children exclaimed in admiration once again, and the little wolf cub's eyes brightened considerably as he looked at Wu Chengyu.

When a group of children rushed out of the prison, Wu Chengyu ignored their reunion and turned to look at another large prison.

There are seven adults locked up inside. According to the gang leader's confession, these adults were captured from a dilapidated village of artisans. They are all skilled craftsmen, and such people could fetch a good price even if sold as slaves.

The leader didn't let his men eat them; he planned to sell them to Qingyang Prefecture later.

Those inside, witnessing what was happening before their eyes, all knelt down, kowtowing and begging Wu Chengyu to save them.

Wu Chengyu followed the same method and released these people from prison, who were then extremely grateful.

Wu Chengyu didn't stand on ceremony. Since they had kowtowed, it was considered that they had repaid the favor Wu Chengyu had done for saving them, and the two sides were even.

When Wu Chengyu led the children and the craftsmen out of the dungeon, the slaves outside were still dealing with the corpses. There were only the people in the huge castle, but the presence of the children made it a bit noisy.

Wu Chengyu was slowly considering how to deal with these people. Simply rescuing them and letting them leave like that would leave them wondering what would happen to them, especially the children.

According to the gang leader's confession, there were quite a few bandits in this area, some of whom were just as strong as them, and they weren't the only bandits who ate people.

He had gone to great lengths to save them, and then left them to face an even more tragic fate. Wu Chengyu couldn't do it, nor could he convince himself otherwise. He couldn't possibly go to Western Xia to find those divine martial arts manuals with peace of mind.

In Wu Chengyu's mind, finding the secret manual of divine skills was more like a game, but a game can never be compared to human life.
