Being a knight is not easy
Chapter 304 Testing
Chapter 304 Testing
As they emerged from the slums, they saw a large contingent of heavily armed knights slowly surrounding the area.
The knights were clad in armor that shimmered with mysterious runes, riding tall warhorses whose hooves pounded in unison, like the drumbeats of death.
Robin and Wind Chime exchanged a glance and then moved in unison toward a distant stall.
They tried to make their movements appear natural and unhurried, blending into the crowd like two inconspicuous grains of sand.
At this time, any action that attracts attention could be fatal.
The two then selected and purchased some daily necessities, just like ordinary citizens.
At the stall, they overheard people's conversations.
"The Gatekeeper Knights have been dispatched," an old man in tattered clothes said, shaking his head with a hint of worry in his eyes.
"Such a large-scale operation, could it be to capture legendary powerhouses?" a young vendor wondered curiously, craning his neck to look in the direction of the Knights while tidying up his goods.
"Who knows? Anyway, the slums are going to be in big trouble again. Why do those outsiders always like to hide in the slums?" a woman complained, holding her child tightly in her arms, seemingly afraid of being caught up in the impending chaos.
Robin frowned slightly.
The arrival of the Gatekeeper Knights will be no small matter; they will surely conduct a large-scale search, and innocent civilians will suffer undeserved calamity.
Wind Chime approached Robin and whispered, "Darling, we'd better get out of here as soon as possible."
Robin nodded: "Let's buy some daily necessities before we go!"
After saying that, Robin pulled the wind chimes and quietly left the stall.
They walked along the edge of the street, avoiding the Knights' gaze, and before they knew it, they had many things in their hands, heading towards the edge of the city.
As they were about to leave the area, a squad leader of the Gatekeeper Knights seemed to notice their unusual behavior.
He rode on his horse, his gaze fixed on Robin and Wind Chime, then waved his hand, leading a few of his men in pursuit.
"Stop! You two, what are you doing sneaking around like that?" the squad leader shouted.
Robin's heart sank; he knew trouble was brewing. But he remained calm and turned to the squad leader, saying, "Sir, we're just ordinary citizens. We just bought some daily necessities and were heading home."
The squad leader, mounted on his horse, looked down at Robin and Wind Chime with suspicion in his eyes: "Ordinary citizens? I don't think so. Ordinary citizens wouldn't need to buy so many things."
His gaze swept over the bags of daily necessities in Robin and Wind Chime's hands, as if trying to find some flaw in them.
Robin smiled obsequiously, "Sir Knight, we're getting married at the end of this month, so we have a lot to buy." He tried to make his voice sound sincere and joyful, while his face was plastered with a fawning smile.
After Robin finished speaking, he took out a bag of copper coins and tried to put it into the knight's hand.
The bag of copper coins jingled softly in the sunlight. Although it wasn't a large amount, it was still a considerable sum of money that Robin and his companions could currently afford.
The knight waved his hand, not even touching the money pouch.
His expression remained unchanged, still serious and aloof.
Perhaps it was due to his proud chivalrous spirit, or perhaps he simply looked down on Robin and his companion because they were dressed in coarse linen clothes.
The knight squad leader asked, "Where do you live?"
“Number 26 Iron Felt Street,” Robin quickly stated the property they had secretly purchased.
After carefully examining the two, the knight squad leader smiled and said, "I wish you a happy marriage in advance. Don't come to this area for the next few days."
His tone still carried a commanding quality, but it was much gentler than before. "Yes, yes, thank you, Sir Knight," Robin quickly thanked him, while Wind Chime also bowed slightly in gratitude.
Robin and Wind Chime breathed a sigh of relief after the knight squad leader and his men left.
"That was close! We almost got discovered," Fengling said, patting her chest with lingering fear.
Robin nodded: "Let's stay here for the next few days!"
In this situation, remaining inactive is the best option.
If they hastily flee now, it will only make the Gatekeeper Knights more convinced that there is something wrong with them.
The two headed towards house number 26 on Iron Felt Street. Their steps appeared relaxed, but they were actually very vigilant, constantly watching their surroundings.
A moment later, a knight in light armor emerged from a distance and secretly followed behind Robin and his companions.
The knight was incredibly agile and adept at using his surroundings to conceal himself. He kept a close eye on Robin and Wind Chime's backs, not missing a single detail.
Clearly, the knight squad leader didn't completely believe Robin's words and specifically sent one of his men to follow them.
Fortunately, Robin was cautious and deliberately chose to go home for a few days. If they had run away during this time, it would have alerted the Gatekeeper Knights.
As Robin walked, he quickly considered what to do.
The knight who was stalking them couldn't be shaken off, but they also couldn't be allowed to notice anything amiss.
When they arrived at house number 26 on Iron Felt Street, Robin took out his key and opened the door.
The house was very simply furnished, with only some basic necessities.
Robin and Wind Chime did not let their guard down after entering the house.
"Honey, what do we do now?" Wind Chime asked softly.
Robin replied in a low voice, "Don't make any rash moves. Let's live as usual and see how this stalker reacts."
So Robin started tidying up the house, while Wind Chime went to the kitchen to prepare some simple food.
Their every move was deliberately designed to create the atmosphere of an ordinary newlywed couple's life.
The knight who had been following them hid in a corner not far away, his eyes never leaving Robin and his family's house.
He was waiting, waiting for the moment when Robin would reveal a weakness.
As night fell, Robin lit the oil lamp in the house.
The lights shone through the windows onto the street, creating a small halo in the darkness.
Robin sat by the window, seemingly lost in thought, but actually observing the activity outside.
He found that the stalker was still there, and showed no sign of leaving.
"This stalker is really persistent," Robin thought to himself.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Robin and Wind Chime exchanged a glance, both feeling uneasy.
"Who is it?" Robin shouted.
