Chapter 30: Accomplice
The market in Nightsong was as bustling as ever, with caravans pouring in from all directions. Hunters were hawking game from the borderlands, and shops were filled with grain and ale from the Reach, as well as olives and blood oranges from Dorne.

A woman in simple clothes, with her head lowered, blended into the bustling crowd, avoiding the patrolling guards, and walked quickly through the market.

Her face was hidden by her hood, revealing only a lock of long black hair tied with a red-gold headband.

At noon, Roland walked out of the castle. As he passed through an alley, Nymeria quietly put a wooden tube containing a letter into his hand.

"what is this?"

Roland looked up in shock, but could only see the woman's figure disappearing around the corner.

Looking at the letter in his hand, he saw a familiar mark engraved on the wax seal: a lifelike three-headed dragon, which turned out to be the emblem of the Targaryen family!
His heart was filled with shock and he ran all the way back to his study. He opened the letter tremblingly and scanned the contents. The more he read, the more shocked he became.

"From Roland Storm himself:

Nightsong City should not be a cage that imprisons dignity, but a fortress for writing glory.

The title of Earl of Nightsong City should belong to its true owner, not a pseudo-noble who takes pleasure in mocking others all day long.

Your family, the name of the Carron, is etched in history. Your ancestors wrote the Targaryen dynasty's immortal chapter with sword and loyalty.

These achievements are still remembered by the Iron Throne.

During the First Dornish War, your ancestors pledged allegiance to Aegon the Conqueror, marching south with him to consolidate the southern border for the Iron Throne.

Since then, the Cullen family has been known as the Stormland Shield.

During the chaos of the Vulture Hunt, your grandmother, Countess Ellen Cullen, swore to defend Nightsong City to the death. Her blood stained the city walls red, and her loyalty forged the glory of the Cullen family.

During the regency of King Aegon III, Lord Royce Cullen assisted the young king with unquestionable loyalty and wisdom, safeguarding peace for the Seven Kingdoms.

Now, Night Song City has fallen into the hands of villains.

And you, Roland, who has the blood of the Cullen family, were humiliated by your brother Bryce. You should never endure these injustices.

If you will contribute to the revival of House Targaryen, I pledge to you, in the name of Viserys III, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, and only rightful heir to House Targaryen:
The throne of Nightsong will be yours.

This castle will be yours and your descendants' legal domain for generations to come, officially granted by House Targaryen.

You will no longer be a bastard, but a legitimate heir to the Cullen name.

Roland, the time has come. Pick up the ancestral shield and become the true master of Nightsong City.

My messenger will await your reply tonight in the river valley outside the city. Remember, the Iron Throne will never betray your loyalty!

May the gods bless you.

Viserys Targaryen."

The letter paper trembled slightly with Roland's fingers. He took a deep breath and tried to suppress the excitement in his heart.

The heir of the Targaryen family actually knew him and wrote to him personally?
Viserys III, this almost forgotten name, now appears before him with unparalleled temptation!
Roland raised his head and looked through the window at the inner castle of Nightsong City. There, it was a symbol of the glory of the Cullen family, but to him, it was like a cage.

He doesn't deserve the surname Cullen. He's just a little bastard who has been pointed at from behind since he was a child.

Even if he fought to the death on the battlefield, all the glory would belong to his brother Bryce, and he would never get real respect.

Maybe all this will change!
If Viserys was willing to support him, he would no longer be the Roland Storm who was humiliated by his brother!

He would become Roland Cullen, a man who could stand on equal footing with other noble lords!

Roland was both excited and frightened, his heart pounding like a rabbit in his pocket. A path to dignity and power lay before him. It was a huge gamble, but also his chance to turn things around!

...

Late at night, Roland rode out of Nightsong City alone and headed towards the agreed location along the winding road.

It was a hidden river valley, surrounded by rocky mountains, with only a relatively flat open space in the middle.

A bonfire crackled in the center of the clearing, and a few vague figures could be seen.

Roland's gaze fell on the face of a young man with long silver-gold hair, and his body trembled involuntarily.

He was wearing a crimson robe with a red and black three-headed dragon emblem embroidered on his chest. He had a high nose bridge, slightly pale cheeks, a pair of violet eyes, and a hint of a smile on his lips.

Roland's throat was dry, and he trembled, "You are..."

"Roland, you stand before Viserys Targaryen III, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm!"

Rhallor stood in for Viserys with a serious expression and unquestionable authority.

Roland dismounted, knelt on one knee, and clenched his right fist against his chest.

"Your Highness, are the Targaryens ready to reclaim the Iron Throne?"

Viserys nodded and said calmly, "The time has come. I need you to demonstrate your loyalty."

Roland was agitated. "Your Highness, how can I show my loyalty?"

Laharo stepped forward and said, "You only need to do a small favor for His Highness, and you can become the master of Nightsong City."

"What do you need me to do?"

"On the night of the next full moon, you only need to open the gates of Nightsong City and lower the drawbridge. Then, Bryce Cullen will die in a bandit attack. You will become the hero who saved Nightsong City and will then rightfully inherit the title of Earl."

Roland was shocked.

Doesn't this make him a traitor?
"What if I refuse?" he asked.

Laharo didn't say anything, but the murderous intent in his eyes conveyed his meaning clearly.

If you don’t agree, you will die!

Roland's heart shuddered, and he turned to look at Viserys, but he kept silent. It seemed that the servant meant what he meant.

Since the other party has told him the entire plan, he is an accomplice. If he doesn't cooperate, he will die. In the end, he can only grit his teeth.

"I'll cooperate."

Rhaelor took the opportunity to untie Roland's sword, and Viserys also took out a ring engraved with the mark of a three-headed dragon and handed it to Roland as a token of his love.

"This is proof of your loyalty to the Targaryen family. When the army arrives in the future, it will protect your territory from any harm."

When Roland returned from the valley, he was still holding the ring tightly in his hand, with mixed feelings in his heart.

Even his sword was taken away, leaving no room for regret.

This was a huge gamble. Although the risk was huge, if he won, the stakes would be a chance to get rid of his illegitimate status, a legitimate earl title, and power over his brother Blaise!
