Chapter 207 Begging for mercy
On the third day, Barristan heard that Stannis, Davos, and Devon would be executed in Victory Square in the center of the city.

Stannis, the stubborn king, is now about to die in a foreign land.

He rushed to the execution ground, and the sight before him made him gasp in horror.

The entire square was packed with people, three or four deep, making it impossible to move. Merchants, artisans, slaves, and even noble ladies who usually kept to themselves all poured out. People stood on tiptoe, craning their necks, afraid of missing this historic moment.

"Is he really the King of Westeros?"

"Of course! Stannis Baratheon! I heard the Commander-in-Chief intends to execute him personally!"

"My God, that's the king!"

“Our Commander-in-Chief is truly remarkable; even the King of Westeros has become his prisoner!”

The Shield of Pentos stood in a circle around the execution platform, its members clad in armor and armed, their faces solemn. However, today there was no gallows or guillotine on the platform, only an empty stone platform.

Stannis was bound to the central stake, dressed in a simple black robe, his expression indifferent, as if he had long since seen through life and death. Davos and Davon stood on either side, their faces deathly pale.

Suddenly, a tremendous dragon roar resounded through the sky, and everyone looked up at the heavens.

Then, a red dragon slowly descended onto the plaza, its amber vertical pupils gleaming with wisdom, its scales shining like rubies.

Stannis stared at the red dragon, which was taller than a person, and his face turned deathly pale.

He had lived on Dragonstone for many years, seen countless dragon-shaped stone carvings, and read countless legends about dragons, but he had never seen a living dragon.

Now, this legendary creature stood before him, and he was about to perish under the dragon's flames. The irony of his fate made him give a bitter laugh.

Davos and Davon were utterly horrified. The Red Dragon Migo opened its blood-red maw, as if it could crush their heads like walnuts in one bite.

Terrified screams erupted from the crowd. Some covered their eyes, while others stared intently, afraid to miss this once-in-a-lifetime sight. Children were held tightly by adults, while the followers of the Seven Gods made the sign of the Seven Holy Symbols on their chests.

"The execution begins!" Rahalo patted Migo on the shoulder and stepped back.

With his command, the Shield of Pentos sounded its horn, and then, as if Migo could understand, an orange-red light began to emanate from deep within his throat.

Death was approaching, and Stannis and the other two closed their eyes at the same time.

"Gods above, is that the legendary dragon flame?"

"King Stannis is going to be burned at the stake!"

Fear and excitement filled the crowd at the same time; everyone held their breath, waiting for this historic moment.

"and many more!"

Just then, Barristan pushed his way through the crowd and knelt down on one knee before Rahalo.

“I, Barristan Selmi, former Commander-in-Chief of the Kingsguard, swear allegiance to Lahalocao! I only beg for your mercy and pardon!”

As soon as he finished speaking, Rahalo stared at Barristan with some surprise. The Shield of Pentos around him exchanged glances, then showed surprise, clearly having remembered the old knight's identity.

“Sir Barristan,” Rahallo’s voice commanded, “what do you mean?”

Barristan bowed his head deeply: "Khal, I beg you to allow these three to don the black robes and go to the Wall to serve as Night's Watchmen. I have heard of unrest north of the Wall, and that is when warriors are needed. I can exchange my loyalty for their lives!"

When Lahalo heard the commotion north of the Wall, his eyes narrowed. He re-examined the white-haired old knight before him. Barristan, on the other hand, felt uneasy. Could this conqueror really still take notice of his old bones?

"Unusual activity north of the Great Wall?"

“Yes, Khal Drogo. When Robert went to war, I was in charge of the administration as the acting Hand of the King. I received a letter from my brothers in the Night's Watch, warning me that,” he paused, looking for the right words, “the letter seemed to describe something unusual. Everyone in the Great Council thought it was the Night's Watch complaining, but I thought it should be taken seriously.”

The Night King and the White Walkers are a threat to all mankind. There can never be too many people on the Wall. Between killing three people and gaining four more helpers, Laharo did not hesitate to choose the latter.

He then turned to the crowd and announced loudly:

"The one who pleads for Stannis today is none other than the fearless Barristan, the warrior who has terrified Westeros!"

A gasp of amazement erupted from the crowd. Barristan's name was known to everyone in Westeros, and even in Essos, his fame was widespread. People in the back of the crowd stood on tiptoe, eager to catch a glimpse of this legendary knight.

“Sir Barristan,” Rahalo stepped up to him, looking down at him, “are you willing to swear an oath to the Seven Gods?”

Barristan slowly rose, drew his longsword, and declared in a loud and solemn voice, "I, Barristan Selmi, pledge my allegiance to Rahalokao with this sword, this body, and this life, in the witness of the gods, until the very last moment of my life!"

He handed the sword hilt to Rahalo, who took the sword, the tip lightly touching his shoulder, before handing it back to Barristan, thus completing the sacred ritual.

"Rise, knight. From this day forward, you are my sword!"

The crowd erupted in thunderous applause and cheers.

The fearless Barristan chose to pledge allegiance to Lahalo, elevating Lahalo's fame to unprecedented heights!

Then Rahallo turned to Stannis: "Stannis Baratheon, at Ser Barristan's request, I declare that I will spare your lives, but you must go to the Wall and swear an oath to become Night's Watchmen."

Stannis laughed, but it was a bleak laugh.

“No, Rahalo.” He shook his head, his voice carrying a sense of relief and calm: “I have seen it all. Compared to you, I am nothing. The Iron Throne means nothing to me, and my life means nothing.”

He straightened his back, and his hunched figure once again displayed the majesty of a king. Then, looking at Davos and Davon, his eyes regained a little light.

"I command you two to pledge your allegiance to this true king! He is the one who can create the future!"

Davos was already in tears and wanted to speak, but was interrupted by Stannis's voice.

"Come on, let's end this. Please let me leave with dignity, instead of living a wretched life in the icy wilderness of the North."

Lahalo cast an inquiring glance at Barristan. Stannis's life belonged to Barristan, and only Barristan could decide his fate.

Barristan looked at the stubborn man, the former First Lord of the Sea and Robert's successor.

At this moment, he was no longer the heartless king, but a knight who chose to die for honor.

A sense of respect welled up in his heart, but seeing that Stannis was determined to die, he slowly nodded to Laharo.

"May you find rest in the arms of the Virgin Mary, Stannis Baratheon." Laharo patted Migo's head.

"Dracarys!"
