Chapter 170 Blasphemy
Chapter 170 Blasphemy
"Galan! Help me!" Vera struggled violently.
Two burly men stepped forward to try to stop Garan, but he drew his longsword without hesitation. With a flash of cold light, blood splattered, and the two men immediately fell to the ground, screaming in agony.
"No violence shall be used in the sanctuary! It is blasphemy against the gods!"
No sooner had the bishop finished speaking than he saw Garan rushing straight toward him. He was immediately terrified and circled around the altar with Garan, his tall hat askew to one side, and he didn't even bother to fix it. He was in a very sorry state.
Seeing this, Garland spat and pointed his sword at the two burly men holding Vera hostage, shouting, "Let go! Or you'll both die!"
The burly men exchanged glances, then let go and retreated.
Garland rushed to Vera's side and cut the ropes binding her with a single sword stroke. Vera threw herself into his arms, her body still trembling slightly.
"Are you alright?" Garland asked in a low voice.
“I’m fine,” Vera said, stopping her sobs. “Let’s get out of here.”
"Okay! Let's go now! Back to Caohai!" He pulled Vera up, turned around and left without saying another word.
The bishop finally straightened his hat, hiding behind the altar with only his head showing, and said relentlessly, "Garland Tyrell! You're too late, she's already Mavreleshley's wife!"
"Shut up!" Garan turned around and shouted sharply, "You have defied the will of others, and the gods will punish you!"
The bishop sneered, "Only I can represent the will of the gods! This heretical woman has defiled Highgarden and the gods!"
Galan was an extremely devout follower of the Seven Gods. Hearing the bishop so shamelessly distort the facts, he trembled with rage, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
"I'm warning you, take back those words, or I'll kill you!"
The atmosphere inside the sanctuary suddenly became tense. Just then, the sound of horses' hooves came from outside the sanctuary. The bishop knew that reinforcements had arrived, and his heart was immediately relieved. He danced with glee and shouted loudly:
"She is a heretic! You are an apostate! The gods will punish you! House Tyrell will be disgraced for eternity, and your children and descendants will be cursed by the gods for all eternity!"
"You despicable scoundrel! I'll kill you!"
Upon hearing this, Galan was overcome with rage and could no longer contain himself. He suddenly charged toward the bishop.
"Galan! No!"
Velas finally arrived, panting, and tried to stop them, but it was too late.
A flash of cold light appeared, and blood splattered on the seven sacred elephants!
"You...! How dare you...!"
The longsword pierced the bishop's chest. His eyes widened as he stared in disbelief at the blade before him. His lips moved, but he could no longer utter a sound, and finally, he slowly collapsed.
Renly promised to make him Archbishop once he sat on the Iron Throne, but it seems that this promise will not be kept.
The sanctuary fell into a deathly silence, followed by a burst of gasps and screams.
The bishop is the highest representative sent by the Seven Churches in King's Landing, and the supreme leader of the Seven Churches in Highgarden and even the Reach.
Murdering a bishop is not just a simple matter of killing a person; it can even be seen as blasphemy against the seven gods and could be punished as blasphemy.
Under the laws of Westeros, murdering a high-ranking clergyman is usually punishable by death, either by beheading or hanging, or even the more brutal punishment of being put in the ravens.
Maeger Targaryen I, due to his conflict with the Church, ordered the execution of the archbishop who served under Aeneas I, which triggered the "Orderly Revolt" and led to a large-scale war.
Garland's crimes are so grave that they cannot be redeemed. He will have no place in Westeros, and no lord or duke will dare to take him in.
Velas sighed heavily and suddenly blocked Garan's path.
"There are soldiers at the front gate, go through the back gate!"
Outside the sanctuary, alarm bells rang throughout the sky, and soldiers surged in from all directions. Velas struggled to close the door, then sat alone in his wheelchair, slowly drawing his longsword.
"Thank you, brother!"
Garland pulled Vera away quickly through the back door, tears glistening in his eyes.
Farewell, Highgarden!
...
At dawn, Garland and Vera escaped Highgarden and galloped towards the White Poplar Camp. Vera, held tightly in Garland's arms, turned and asked:
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to settle the score with Renly!" Garland gritted his teeth. "That treacherous villain!"
The two traveled day and night, finally arriving at the Baiyangtan camp on the evening of the third day. The camp was orderly, with soldiers coming and going, and wisps of smoke rising from the chimneys; everything seemed normal.
Garland dismounted and, ignoring his exhaustion, headed straight for Renly's central command tent. Vera had no choice but to follow him closely.
"Where is Renly?" Garland grabbed an oncoming guard and asked sharply.
News of Garland's killing of the bishop had not yet reached the camp, and the guards, without suspicion, quickly bowed respectfully to the second son of the Tyrell family.
"Lord Garan, His Majesty the King left this morning."
"Where did you go?"
"This..." the guard hesitated for a moment, "I don't know."
Garland shoved the guard aside and strode toward the command post. Inside the tent, Count Randle Tarly was looking at a map when Garland stormed in, looking surprised.
"Sir Garland? Didn't you return to Highgarden?"
“Where’s Renly?” Garland asked directly.
"His Majesty the King has left the camp with 15,000 men from Stormlands, saying he has important business to attend to."
Garland hurriedly asked, "Which direction did you go?"
“South,” Landau put down the map and examined Garland, “what happened?”
Garland didn't answer, and turned to walk out.
Landau hurriedly called out to him, "Sir Garland, where are you going?"
"fine!"
Before he could finish speaking, Garland had already stepped out of the tent. Vera was waiting for him outside. Seeing his ashen face, she whispered, "What's wrong?"
“Renly has taken the Stormlands army out,” Garland said, taking Vera’s hand. “I have a bad feeling. Come on, let’s go find Rahalo!”
The two remounted their horses and were about to leave when they heard the sound of hooves approaching from afar. The newcomer was none other than Loras.
Upon seeing his brother, he breathed a sigh of relief: "Galan! Thank the gods for being here!"
The two brothers quickly exchanged information, and Loras's expression suddenly turned serious: "Oh no! Brienne told me quietly before she left that Margaery is in danger!"
"When? Where?"
"Today! In Howling Valley!"
Garan's expression changed drastically. He called Loras, and the three of them spurred their horses and galloped towards the Howling Valley.
Howling Valley is a low-lying area where the frontier of Dorne meets the Stormlands. Two mountain ranges meet here, forming a narrow valley. The wind blows all year round, sounding like howling, hence the name Howling Valley.
The gentle slopes on both sides of the valley are suitable for a large army to encamp, while the flat and open valley floor is perfect for a meeting between the two sides.
Renly arrived early with two thousand elite cavalrymen, raised the crowned stag banner of Baratheon at the bottom of the valley, and solemnly set up a table with two cedar chests on it. The chests were opened to reveal gleaming gold coins inside.
However, Renly had 15,000 Stormtroopers lying in ambush in the dense forests on both sides of the valley, ready to launch a surprise attack at any moment.
Renly remained calm, glancing at the valley entrance from time to time. As soon as Rahalo entered the valley, Goode would order his soldiers to seal the entrance with boulders.
At that point, only Renly's back will be the only exit left, where Roland will also lead a large force to ambush him. Laharo will have no way to retreat and will be at Renly's mercy.
