Chapter 138 Grenadier

As night fell, hundreds of large bonfires were lit on the plain. Lahalo and Red Eagle sat around the fire, enjoying bread made from the first batch of flour milled by the mill.

“Lord Kao,” Red Eagle said in a deep voice, “we did not come directly from the east.”

"The caravan told me you had a conflict with the Dothraki?"

“It wasn’t a conflict, it was a massacre!” Red Eagle’s jaw bulged, his eyes filled with pain. “Our group had just crossed the Painted Mountains when we encountered more than 500 riders from the Fifth Division of the Kadoc.”

They demanded that we hand over all our livestock and property, and select five hundred young women to be their slaves.

Although we are not a warrior nation, our tribe still has three thousand warriors, so I refused their offer.

We thought with so many of them, they would retreat, but the riders just laughed at us and then charged.

"How many people died?" Rahalo asked coldly.

“More than five hundred people,” Red Eagle said, closing his eyes in anguish, “we simply cannot resist them.”

Nana poked at the fire with a twig and asked in surprise, "How did you escape?"

"The tribe's elderly, weak, women, and children were all there; we had nowhere to escape but to fight with our backs against the wall. In the end, however, we made them pay the price."

The Lazarin people are not cowards. We have been hunting and herding sheep with slingshots since we were young, and we are good at setting traps in the jungle. It's just that we don't have warhorses and can't fight them head-on!
Our soldiers tripped many riders with tripwires, and slingers smashed many skulls. They eventually retreated with over thirty corpses.

Red Eagle waved to the campfire: "Red Sheep, come here! Explain the details to Lord Kao."

A boy of about fifteen or sixteen years old heard the call, put down his food, and strode over. He was lean but had well-proportioned muscles.

Unlike most Lazarin people, his eyes showed no fear, only anger.

“This is my youngest son, Red Sheep,” Red Eagle introduced. “Although he is only fifteen years old, he is already a centurion.”

Red Sheep proudly puffed out his chest: "Those riders thought we were just lambs to the slaughter, but they were very wrong!"

I led a thousand soldiers to conceal ourselves on the left flank of the battlefield. As they charged, we immediately launched our attack. Many fell from their horses, suffering broken bones and fractures!

As he spoke, Red Sheep untied a rope from his waist. The rope was divided into three strands, each with a stone attached to its end.

The tripwire that Red Sheep brought out was similar to the "meteor rope" used by the Gauchos of South America.

The rope connects three stones and can be thrown to entangle the target's legs. It is especially effective against cavalry. Once the warhorse is tripped, the rider will fall and be half-dead, losing his fighting ability.

This was also a weapon developed by the Lazarin and Dothraki cavalry through long-term warfare.

However, Lahalo showed little interest in the meteor bolt, but became very interested in another weapon that Lahalo had taken out.

“This is also our weapon.” Red Sheep held a rope in his hand, the end of which was attached to a leather pouch.

He put a stone into his leather bag, grabbed the rope and spun it quickly. Suddenly, the stone shot out like lightning. With a "thud," a branch of a small tree fifty meters away snapped off, and leaves fluttered down.

Lahalo's eyes widened, and he couldn't help but give Red Sheep a thumbs up.

This young man reminded him of the Balearic slingers, whom the Carthaginians had employed in large numbers during the Punic Wars, causing considerable trouble for the Roman legions. Recognizing their prowess, the Romans also hired them at high prices, and they later became a long-term service unit, distinguishing themselves in the conquest of Gaul.

An adult can throw a stone more than 100 meters per second, with a maximum range of 400 meters and an effective kill range of 200 meters, even farther than a bow and arrow.

Moreover, it combines speed and destructive power; the stone projectiles are enough to penetrate light armor and shields, and a hit to the head is almost certainly fatal.

What if instead of stones, they threw Molotov cocktails or explosives?

Then let's triple the range of his most powerful weapon!
Good deeds are rewarded. I never expected that taking in the Lazarin people would not only increase the population and food production under my rule, but also provide such excellent soldiers. It's a wonderful surprise!

Red Sheep exclaimed excitedly, "It was so satisfying to see those Dothraki riders fall off their horses! When they were in disarray, we attacked with slingshots, and we killed those thirty-odd people!"

At this moment, Red Eagle coughed lightly and looked at Lahalo with a hint of apology, saying, "Please forgive me, Kao. My son is young and impetuous, and his words may have been disrespectful."

To Red Eagles' surprise, Lajalo burst into laughter.

“No need to apologize. If you don’t act tough, are you even a young man? I’m only three years older than him.” He turned to Red Sheep, his eyes gleaming. “Red Sheep, how about coming to the battlefield with me this time?”

“You mean…” Red Sheep’s eyes lit up immediately.

“The five tribes of Kadoc must pay the price,” Rahalo said. “I had planned to conquer them all along. Now that you are my people, and they have attacked you, this is a blatant provocation against my authority!”

Red Eagle grabbed Rahalo's hand, excitedly saying, "Our warriors are also willing to follow Khao into battle! To avenge our fallen comrades!"

"it is good!"

Lahalo slapped his thigh. "The five tribes of Kadoc are probably coming soon. I will lead 30,000 cavalry from Karasa to attack from the front."

"Then your slingers can ambush them in the Kohor Forest. Once we defeat them, you can intercept and kill their remaining troops in the forest."

No one was worse than anyone else. The Lazarin were called the Hesilazi by the Dothraki because they were too few in number, had no warhorses, and suffered repeated defeats over a long period of time, which had left them with little morale.

If given a few big wins to boost their confidence, Lahalo believed that the Lazarin slingers would be perfectly capable of serving as an important branch of the army.

Grenadier!
However, their current combat effectiveness is questionable. They can be used to hunt down the remnants of defeated troops, but they certainly cannot be assigned to support missions.

"Chase down the remnants..." Red Sheep's body immediately slumped, looking utterly dejected.

“Don’t misunderstand,” Rajalo laughed. “You don’t have horses, so you’re not suited for charging. The Kohol Forest is your home ground.”

Moreover, the hunt is equally important. I will never let my enemy escape. Whether we can wipe out the Dothraki in the forest depends entirely on you!

After these words, Red Sheep puffed out his chest again, looking proud, while Red Eagle watched his son being intimidated by a few words and smiled silently.

"Kao, I want to go too!"

Just then, a silvery voice suddenly interrupted, and Rahalo turned his head to see Nana standing up.
