Chapter 143 Joining the Fun and Earning Extra Money
Ruger watched the door slowly close, lost in thought.
Are there any certified wizards here? It seems there's more than one, and they sound like they're not just first-level wizards? If they go crazy like the ones next door, wouldn't that be a little scary?
The door creaked open again.
The red-eyed girl, Elena, peeked her head out from under the door.
"Oh, by the way, little puppy, this is a kiss I owe you," she said with a smile.
Ruger was taken aback. Was that really the case?
Just as he was reflecting, Elena blew him a kiss, and the door closed again.
Before long, the sound of old Lunser's wooden stake foot chiseling against the floor could be heard downstairs.
It was still early, but Luger was already wide awake.
He pushed open the door and went downstairs, where he saw Old Dog Renser busy preparing some things, and Elena winking at him from the side.
"Kid, here are the processed materials," Old Lunser said, tossing a small bag over without turning around as he heard footsteps. "You stay here and continue making the purification potion. I have to go out for a bit."
“Uncle Lenser, can I go with you?” Ruger asked.
He caught the small pouch that flew towards him with both hands, and after a moment's thought, he made a decision to go and see for himself. This woman named Elena had come to Old Lenser for help; presumably, her Uncle Lenser was adept at handling these matters, and at the very least, her safety should be guaranteed.
“My dear nephew, if you’re willing to come, then come along. I’ll give you extra pay if you can help,” old Lunther said, bowing his head and tidying up the things in his hands. “After all, this job isn’t in the contract, and I, old Lunther, am not such a heartless person.”
Elena smiled upon hearing this, seemingly disagreeing with old Lenser's words.
Looking at her smile, Ruger figured she must have been ripped off, but in the end, Mr. Nuondo would probably pay for it.
There were still traces of blood on the ground outside.
Old Rensser and Elena walked ahead, occasionally deliberately avoiding areas with puddles.
Ruger followed silently behind the two, his big eyes looking around.
The city after the rain had a faint smell of blood, but if he smelled it carefully, he could also detect a strange, sweet fragrance.
After going around a street, we came to a shop that was much more impressive than Old Lunser's shop. After all, the shop was on the street, while Old Lunser's was in a back alley.
Elena tiptoed forward and opened the door.
Ruger immediately saw the mess inside, but didn't see any moving figures right away.
"Be careful in the future, don't get hurt. At most, choose one low-level healing potion. Any more than that is not covered by this job, and you'll have to pay for it yourself," Old Lunser said as he went inside.
Luger was the slowest, and the third to go in.
As he walked around the rows of fallen shelves, Old Lenser and his companion had already gone up to the second floor. As back-to-back neighbors, the area here was surprisingly much more spacious than Old Lenser's place. The house felt like it was curved, and naturally, there were more rooms on the second floor.
When Ruger came up, the two old men, Lunser and Luther, were no longer there. He glanced at them briefly and went straight to the third floor.
At that moment, there was even snoring coming from upstairs.
The third floor doesn't appear to have been partitioned into as many rooms, or rather, it used to have some partitions.
When Ruger came up, the first thing he saw was a slimy monster lying there asleep. As it slept, it continued to secrete more slime with its snoring. A lot of slime had already accumulated on the floor. If they had come any later, it would have flowed up to the second floor.
The strange thing looked like a giant, blood-red maggot, but it also had three pairs of sharp legs.
Old Lenser was there with a bottle, collecting the slime flowing from the ground.
“Mr. Lenser!” Elena said in a low voice.
Old Lunser paused, glanced back at Luger who had followed, then turned back and continued, "Hehe, these things are all made of top-quality materials. We have to buy them from him when we need them. I'm not happy just looking at that old guy making money."
Old Renser shook his head and tossed a large bottle to Ruger, asking him to help collect it.
Elena could only stand aside helplessly, watching the uncle and nephew busy themselves.
“Mr. Lenser…” Elena called out softly again. “I know, I know.”
Old Renser put away the bottle in his hand and waved for Ruger to step back.
The newly secreted mucus was no longer translucent, but had begun to take on a faint blood-red hue.
Old Lenser reached into his storage bag and threw a large clump of black chains at it. The chains intertwined like a black net, enveloping the monstrous maggot that was larger than a person.
The maggot seemed to sense something, its snoring suddenly stopped, its wrinkled body swelled and trembled in an instant, surging and turning into a scale-covered appearance. As it twisted and swung, it suddenly sprang up, and six blood-red eyes opened on its forehead at the same time.
In the blink of an eye, it transformed from a strange, sleeping maggot into something resembling a small, sub-dragon.
Moreover, the eeriness did not diminish at all. It looked like an insect or a beast, and its movements were extremely violent. Blood-red slime was still dripping from the gaps in its black scales.
Each end of the black chains was rooted in the void, as if there were fixed points in the air that Luger could not see.
The monster leaped up and was caught in the chain net. Luger thought this might be the price of losing his mind. Judging from Old Lenser's appearance, this was obviously not the first time he had dealt with this neighbor. He had calculated the other party's habits steadily, and the neighbor who had turned into a monster was once again uncooperative and was accurately predicted.
The chains fixed in the void stretched taut at each end, and the monster gradually lost its ability to struggle, hanging in mid-air, dripping bloody slime through the gaps in the chains.
"Has he recently turned on himself again?" Old Lunser asked, frowning.
“Of course, he can’t stay still. He won’t stop, and he can’t stop,” Elena said casually, arms crossed in front of her. “According to the contract, as long as I cooperate, he can’t stop.”
With a crash, the tightening chains suddenly slipped from their grip!
The strange insect-beast vanished into thin air.
Ruger turned his head at the sound.
The slime that had previously spread to the second floor surged up the stairs.
The monstrous insect, its entire body turning blood-red, suddenly leaped out of the churning slime, its three pairs of sharp legs embedding themselves in the wall, and began to run wildly.
The clanging of chains followed immediately.
Ruger watched the chains fly over his head and retreated without hesitation, all the way back to old Lenser's side.
"Damn it!" Old Lenser cursed, and sparks flew from the sharp teeth of the big dog's mouth again.
The chain missed again, and this time, before it could tighten, the strange insect beast broke free on its own.
Luger watched it; after its scales turned blood red, it seemed to become even more agile.
The slime on all three layers of the ground began to surge.
“Mr. Lenser!” Elena suddenly spoke up.
"I know, I know, just try not to hurt him," old Lenser said, pursing his lips.
Ruger suddenly felt that the thing seemed to have its eye on him, as if it had seen him as a sweet little snack.
"Uncle, let me try."
As he spoke, Ruger patted old Lenser on the shoulder and waved for the two of them to step back.
Old Renser looked him up and down with amusement, then leisurely stepped aside: "My good nephew, go ahead and do it. Your uncle will always support you. Of course, I can give you a 50% discount on the second potion."
Elena also stood beside old Lenser, watching with great interest.
Ruger waited, feeling the vibrations from the slime beneath his feet. Having used the foul-smelling skin for so long, he was now more acutely aware of this blatant malice, as if somewhere in that slime, a hunter was watching him, wanting to tear him apart.
Assessing the extent of the foul-smelling skin, he cast the spell without hesitation.
The mucus suddenly stopped, then surged violently, gradually stopped again, and a motionless figure appeared on the floor.
Old Lunser, who had been waiting to see a good show, clearly did not expect things to be resolved so easily and smoothly. The expression on his big dog face did not even have time to keep up with the change in his eyes.
“Dear Uncle, perhaps we could consider adding a service to our shop,” Ruger said with a smile, “such as subduing some erratic customers without harming them, though I would have to increase my commission slightly.”
