Kobold Wizard's Journal
Chapter 110 New Home and Neighbors
Chapter 110 New Home and Neighbors
Red-haired Mautel did not disappoint.
The matter was completed as requested by Ruger the next morning, and three positions were selected for Ruger to choose from.
Since he couldn't refuse such hospitality, Luger reluctantly boarded the beast-drawn carriage for a ride.
Lorigo wanted to go with them, but Ruger refused.
Seeing this, the clever maid Daisy understood and meticulously carried out Ruger's will, specially arranging for a relatively inconspicuous animal carriage from within the manor, without the Starry Family crest, to travel.
Ruger remained unceremoniously leaning against a corner of the carriage, and in the end, only he and Myrtle were traveling together.
He looked up at the red-haired woman sitting diagonally opposite him and felt that she seemed to have something on her mind.
"It seems the trip to the castle wasn't as smooth and enjoyable as Lorigo had described," he said.
Ruger's words startled the red-haired woman, and she quickly adjusted her slightly tired expression.
Faced with Luger's teasing, the red-haired woman hesitated for a moment and said, "Young Master Lorig is a man who is not interested in worldly affairs. His comfortable life has made him very particular and picky, but it is not that he actively pursues those flashy and impractical things. He would rather become a spellcaster like you and wholeheartedly explore the wonders of magic. It's just a pity that he doesn't have the talent in this area."
“But he had to face things he didn’t like, such as the awkward identity of heir, his brother who seemed no different from ordinary people but could actually die at any time, and the third young master who was hostile to him…” she said softly.
Ruger adjusted the arm he was using as a pillow and glanced up at her.
"Shouldn't you just say things like that?" he said.
The red-haired woman remained silent for a moment upon hearing this.
“I hope you can support Master Lorigo. He is a kind person who resists but also tries his best to do what is appropriate for his status. Many things are not what he wants,” she said.
Ruger smiled and said, "We are friends, that's what I've always said. If something bad happens to a friend, I will naturally help."
The red-haired woman hesitated, clearly unsure of Ruger's attitude, but in the end she said nothing more.
The two then steered the conversation back to the kobold wizard's new home.
The wheels creaked and turned.
Ruger could already smell the stench of the outer city, not just the stench, but also the aroma of food, or to put it nicely, the scent of life. It was nothing like the aristocracy in the inner city, where the streets were lined with large houses and manors, all with huge courtyards. You couldn't tell who lived inside just by walking past the door. In the outer city, you could hear children making noise from the houses next door right on the street.
“This first place should best suit your requirements. It’s one of the cleanest and most upscale neighborhoods in the outer city, and it’s relatively quiet. It’s located at the border between the inner and outer city,” she explained carefully. “Young Master Lorigo was worried that you might want to experiment with some spells, so he specially chose a courtyard here with a basement. It has been reinforced, so you can use it with peace of mind.”
As she spoke, she carefully observed Ruger's expression.
"Please thank Lorigor for me. Just hearing about it is very satisfying. I think we probably won't need to go to the other two places," he said with a smile.
The wheels began to bounce and jolt. Although it was one of the better places in the outer city, it was still quite different in detail from the inner city, especially the area where the nobility lived.
The servant driving the carriage adjusted the speed, and after a series of intermittent bumps, the carriage finally stopped in front of a courtyard.
The small courtyard could hardly fit two animal-drawn carts, and a half-dead, crooked tree struggled in the yard, growing into an ugly shape.
“I’ll send someone to trim it later…” said the red-haired Mortel.
"No need, this is fine as it is. Not everything has to be perfectly tidy." He said, pushing open the courtyard gate and walking inside.
As he moved around and looked around, he could tell from the details that no one had lived here for some time. This was good, because he was afraid that Lorigo would use the power of the Starry Family to forcibly drive the people out of the house in order to please him, the spellcaster.
The house has three floors, but it is actually smaller than the two-story cottage he lived in for a period of time on the estate.
He only walked around the first floor once before leaving.
"I am very satisfied."
Luger's dog face didn't hold back its smile.
There were obvious signs of cleaning inside the house, presumably done at the same time as the basement reinforcement, and it was ready for immediate occupancy.
“I’m glad Lord Ruger is satisfied. I’ll have Daisy and the others make some more arrangements, and you should be able to move in tomorrow.” Seeing his satisfaction, Mortel said with a relaxed expression. “No need for that. I’ll stay here today.”
Ruger looked around the yard and at the ugly tree that was taller than a person, and the more he looked, the more satisfied he became.
Upon hearing this, the red-haired woman thought for a moment, then took out a palm-sized metal plaque and handed it to Ruger with both hands.
“I’ll go and complete the record. With this sign in your hands, you are now the owner of this house,” she added. “I’ll go back now and have Daisy and the others come over. You should be able to have lunch here today.”
Luger smiled and nodded.
Watching this decisive red-haired woman board the beast-drawn carriage and speed away, it must have been much more bumpy than their journey there.
He stood alone in the courtyard, looking around. The only drawback was that although the houses were detached, they were all very close together, some almost touching. His house was in a relatively good situation.
He opened the door, walked into the living room to let in the fresh air, pulled out an old recliner, and lay down in the open living room to begin reading spellbooks.
The house and courtyard were small, with walls that only reached waist height. While reading, one could see shadowy figures of pedestrians passing by in front of the courtyard.
It made him inexplicably relax, as if he had found a familiar feeling.
Before he knew it, a faint drowsiness crept over him. He didn't resist; instead, he covered his face with the book and fell asleep on the recliner.
People were often walking around on the roadside, so it was impossible to sleep soundly, but it was exceptionally relaxing and enjoyable.
He didn't know how much time had passed; he remained in a state between sleep and wakefulness, noticing the change in light but not waking up on his own.
Until the courtyard gate was pushed open.
A small figure appeared in front of him.
He opened his eyes, and the little guy was looking at him too. They stared at each other for a moment, then he suddenly took the book off his face, revealing his dog face. The little guy screamed in fright.
"Sir, you're so handsome! Your teeth are so sharp!" The little boy's eyes sparkled.
Ruger lowered his gaze and saw a small basket with a brown lid.
The boy, who had been in a daze, suddenly realized something and, with wide eyes, laboriously handed the basket to Ruger.
“Sir, this is a gift for you. My house is right next door. Can I come and play with you again? Your ears are very beautiful too,” the child said, occasionally veerring the conversation to strange topics. “These are my mother’s homemade pancakes. They’re still warm. They’re the best pancakes ever made. Each pancake has a piece of subterranean beast meat on it. Please don’t be shy. My mother said that people who have just moved here might not have time to make lunch.”
Luger was amused by the little guy, sat up from his lying position, and took the basket that the little guy had been holding for a long time.
He opened the lid and sure enough, he saw several pancakes as thick as his palm, each bigger than his face. He picked one up, which was still steaming. One side was golden in color with a few small spots, while the other side showed some strips and chunks of meat sticking out.
"Thank you, and please thank your mother for me."
He took a big bite of the biscuit under the little boy's expectant gaze, leaving a large gap.
"It tastes pretty good," he said, chewing.
"Your teeth are really amazing." The little boy's eyes kept moving between the biscuit and his mouth.
A carriage slowly came to a stop in front of the door, and Daisy and three servants got off and began to move some things.
Ruger patted the little boy's head. He noticed that Daisy had changed into a more ordinary dress instead of the one she wore at the manor.
“Mr. Fang, I have to go now, or my mother will scold me,” the little boy said. “She doesn’t want me to bother you.”
After the little boy finished speaking, he bowed to Ruger in a proper manner, then turned and ran out.
Ruger, eating his biscuit, followed the boy to the gate, waved goodbye, and was already thinking about what Daisy would give him in return.
His gaze swept across the room and he noticed that someone else seemed to be moving, a young woman who appeared to be a superhuman.
