Chapter 228 Epilogue: A Gift from a Faraway Land (Seeking Monthly Tickets)
It was late at night on August 1st. In Guyimai Street, Lijing, China, Ji Minghuan, piloting the No. 8 unit Gu Wenyu, woke up in his room in a residential building and got out of bed.
[Unit 1 – "Black Chrysalis" has been loaded.]
[Note: Due to the target's death, the main mission 4 of Unit 1—"Establish a cooperative relationship with the Royal Court Team's Vice-Captain 'Red Dragon'"—has failed.]
This mission route is now abandoned.
Looking at the words on the panel, Gu Wenyu remained silent for a moment. After a while, he turned to look out the window, silently watching a brightly lit train pass through the overpass.
After staring blankly for a long time, he slowly reached for the remote control from beside his pillow, pressed the power button, and turned on the TV.
The host was reporting on an incident that occurred a dozen hours earlier, at 1:30 a.m. Norwegian time, near Bergen. It was said that several islands had appeared out of nowhere in the sea, and each island showed signs of human habitation. The Outcasts organization was currently conducting a full investigation into the matter.
Gu Wenyu looked up and stared quietly at the photos on the screen. Islands with lonely lights flickering on the sea floated up and down in the rainstorm.
He got out of bed, put on his slippers, turned the doorknob to open the door, and walked slowly towards the stairwell with his head down.
"Going out so late?"
Hearing the noise, Gu Qiye came out of the room, turned around and asked him.
Gu Wenyu paused, but didn't turn around: "I'm in a bad mood, I'm going to the beach to clear my head."
"Do you want me to accompany you?"
"No need, I'll be back in a bit, you go to sleep first."
"Okay, then be careful."
Gu Wenyu nodded, put on his coat, waved to his older brother behind him, then went downstairs, put on his sneakers, went out, walked along the quiet street for a while, and then stood in the empty bus stop.
The cicadas chirped and chirped, the station lights flickered on and off. He put his hands in his pockets, lowered his head and waited for a moment, then boarded the last bus, sat down in the last row of seats, and quietly turned his head to look at the neon lights and the dazzling city lights.
Shortly after, he got off at a bus stop on a coastal highway.
Walking down the coastal highway, Gu Wenyu arrived at the seaside. Standing in front of the port railing, he silently watched the sea under the night sky, the waves rising and falling.
The lighthouse cast a lonely beam of light onto the sea, where the black tide crashed against the shore, breaking into white spray. All was silent, save for the gentle lapping of the waves that enveloped the world.
Suddenly, a strange shadow flew across the night sky—a shark swirling in the black tide. On its back sat a white-haired, blue-eyed boy, wearing a sky-blue T-shirt and pants he had bought on the way.
Gu Wenyu was stunned, and looked up blankly at the man and the shark.
"I told you Shark has eyes that can see a thousand miles. It recognized Gu Wenyu from 800 miles away," Yagubaru said smugly, leaping over the port's fence and hovering in mid-air.
Caesar rolled over, grabbed the fin, and landed on the shark's back, staggering onto the ground. The shark quickly shrank to the size of a palm-sized Nobe shark, which landed lightly on his shoulder.
Just as he was about to speak, Caesar suddenly froze on the spot and turned to look at the little shark on his shoulder.
"Oh no, Aguru... I forgot I don't speak Chinese, and I didn't bring any translation materials with me. What should I do?"
“It’s okay, Shark’s Chinese is top-notch, I’ll be the translator.”
Yagubalu shook his head and said smugly, then his eyes suddenly sharpened as he raised his head to look at Gu Wenyu.
"So you're Gu Wenyu, kid?" The little shark pointed its fin at Gu Wenyu menacingly, like a gangster holding a gun to a debtor's chin.
Gu Wenyu, with his hands in his coat pockets, nodded blankly.
"And what kind of demon or monster are you?"
“I am Agubaru, and this man is Caesar,” the little shark said. “We are Li Qingping’s friends.”
Gu Wenyu suddenly fell silent.
"Stop dawdling, Agubaru, get down to business. I think he's about to faint from fright." Caesar whispered, glancing at Gu Wenyu's trembling legs, which were shaking like a pipa player's. It seemed that for an ordinary person in the human world, a creature like Agubaru was still too advanced, he thought.
"Li Qingping wants me to give this to you."
As the little shark spoke, it suddenly scratched its throat with its fin and spat out a card from its belly. The card was blank on both sides, unlike the other fragments of strange tales. This was something Li Qingping wanted it to leave for Gu Wenyu.
Caesar was taken aback: "Aguru, what is this? I've never seen this type of fragment before?"
"A self-made fragment of a strange tale."
"A self-made fragment? My father said that if someone could really do this, it would be an invention that could overturn a country... Li Qingping is indeed a genius." Caesar was stunned and whispered, "Can I see that fragment?"
“No, that’s for Li Qingping’s friend.” With that, Yagubalu tossed the blank card to Gu Wenyu with his fin.
Gu Wenyu reached a hand out of his pocket, caught the fragment, and vigorously fanned it to remove the shark's saliva.
After a moment of silence, Caesar looked up at him and said, "Gu Wenyu, we're leaving soon."
After a pause, Caesar suddenly said softly, "You have a very good friend." The little shark on his shoulder remained silent for a moment, then translated these words into Chinese for Gu Wenyu:
"We're leaving soon, and you have a really stupid friend."
Gu Wenyu nodded.
Caesar lowered his eyes and thought for a moment before continuing, "Li Qingping won't be back for a long time. He... has gone on a world tour."
The little shark translator said, "That big idiot won't be back for a long time; he's gone on a world tour."
Gu Wenyu nodded.
"Aguru, are you really translating seriously?" Caesar turned to look at the shark on his shoulder and asked suspiciously.
"Yes, it's authentic. Are you questioning Shark's character?! Even though Shark is a shark and doesn't have any character."
The little shark angrily smacked Caesar on the head with its fin.
Then, it leaped off his shoulder and transformed back into a two-meter-long shark. Caesar sighed, stepped onto the harbor railing, and jumped onto its back, grabbing its fin.
The man and the shark quickly left the port and sped towards the brightly lit red-light district.
"Abaguaru, is this China?"
"This is the capital of China. Let me take you to eat my favorite stinky tofu first."
"But Agubalu, why have you come to China? Aren't you a marine creature?"
"Don't worry about Shark's affairs."
"And another thing, why has Li Qingping never mentioned that homemade fragment to me?"
"Impressive, isn't it? This is the charm of Shark Shark. In just a few days, it made the small fry and Red Dragon work like slaves and confess everything."
"Not charisma?"
"Shark-like charm".
Their voices faded into the night, and the crashing waves once again engulfed the harbor.
Gu Wenyu withdrew his gaze from their retreating figures, let out a soft sigh of relief, looked down at the blank card in his hand, and put the card into his coat pocket.
Then he sat on the harbor railing.
As he gazed into the distance, enjoying the sea breeze, he suddenly recalled the Spring Festival a few months ago. The city was bustling with activity, filled with the sounds of gongs, drums, and firecrackers. But the port was deserted, not a soul in sight.
Li Qingping was a cunning old fox; he invited him here alone. The two sat on the harbor railing, quietly enjoying the sea breeze while drinking beer and chatting. They looked up at the fireworks rising into the dark night sky, exploding at the very top, their brilliant sparks reflected on the sea.
At that moment, Gu Wenyu nudged him with his shoulder and teased, "Rich kids really know how to enjoy life."
Li Qingping sat on the railing in silence for a long time, then curled the corners of his mouth slightly, lowered his head, took a sip of beer, and said nothing.
Gu Wenyu took out the blank card from his pocket, looked down at the blank surface of the card, and at that moment he suddenly understood what Li Qingping wanted to say back then.
Only lonely people would think of hiding away in such a secluded place to watch fireworks. Li Qingping was an orphan since childhood. After being adopted by fishermen, they didn't pay much attention to him. In the miniature world, whenever the island groups at sea gathered together and bright bonfires were lit in the town, while everyone sang, danced, and drank in the town, he would sit alone on the fishing boat at sea, quietly watching the brightly lit islands.
Because I don't want anyone to see me all alone, that would be too pathetic.
Even after he went out into the world, before he met Gu Wenyu, every year during the Lunar New Year, he would stand alone quietly at the port watching the fireworks rise in the distance. The world was so lively and bustling, yet it seemed so far away.
So having a friend accompany him to this godforsaken place to watch fireworks and enjoy the festivities must have made him quite happy, making him feel like he wasn't a stray dog left behind by the world anymore.
With his thoughts drifting to this point, Gu Wenyu suddenly shrugged and sighed, "Alright, rich kid... you're just too sentimental and like to pretend to be an artsy youth."
He walked to the vending machine, inserted a coin, bought a bottle of beer, and then leaned against the railing, drinking his beer while looking up at the dark sea.
The world slowly darkened, and even the city lights dimmed.
Gu Wenyu rolled over, leaning against the railing, and took the card out of his coat pocket, staring at it silently. Suddenly, cracks appeared on the card.
"Dude, the workmanship of this is just... well..." He was stunned. He tried to cover the crack on the card, but it still shattered in the end, turning into a blank piece of debris scattered in his palm.
Gu Wenyu's vision went black. He was so angry that he felt like he had been tricked. After hesitating for a while, he simply grabbed the blank fragments and threw them all into the sea.
He sighed softly, leaned close to the mouth of the beer can, and muttered, "He's dead and still trying to fool his brothers, how could he be so wicked..." His voice suddenly stopped.
Startled for a moment, Gu Wenyu slowly turned around and looked up at the suddenly brightened sea surface. A burst of firelight rose from the seabed and shot straight into the sky.
Looking up, the colorful fireworks instantly illuminated the empty night sky, even lighting up the sea. A series of deafening sounds echoed from the dark night, like someone setting off firecrackers.
After a long silence, before the fireworks had died down, Gu Wenyu finished the rest of his beer, threw the can into the sea, and left without looking back.
