Chapter 119 Unknown Side Effects of the Sample
Su Wanqing followed Lu Zhao back to the temporary laboratory in the center of the base. Lin Che followed closely behind them, his face pale and his forehead covered with fine beads of sweat.

His gaze kept wandering, as if trying to break free from some invisible constraint.

"This is bad," Lu Zhao said in a low voice as he brought up the data graph in the storage area on his computer.

"After the samples were exposed to exhaust fumes escaping from the perimeter of the base, some abnormal reactions occurred."

Su Wanqing walked to Lu Zhao's side and carefully examined the data curves on the screen.

"What exactly was the reaction?"

Lu Zhao zoomed in on a section of the record, which showed some incomprehensible fluctuations.

"The original sample would have shown stable radioactivity decay under constant conditions, but after contact with exhaust gas, the decay rate accelerated, and a weak but persistent gas was released. This gas has a small diffusion range, but its effect on zombies is very obvious."

"What impact?" Su Wanqing asked, frowning.

"According to monitoring records, the zombies near the sample area were significantly more active and moved more nimbly. Their originally slow walking speed more than doubled. This suggests that the gas may have stimulated the zombies' nervous system, enhancing their combat capabilities."

Lu Zhao explained, his fingers rapidly tapping on the keyboard. "We need to conduct an urgent test to see how this gas interacts with the zombies."

Lin Che suddenly let out a muffled groan and swayed. He covered his head and groaned in pain.

"Night...no...I can't control myself..."

Su Wanqing immediately supported him. "What's wrong, Lin Che?"

"Night wants to control me. He... he's using my powers to try and amplify the spread of that gas."

Lin Che's voice trembled, filled with struggle. "I...I can't concentrate. My healing ability simply can't stabilize the sample's reaction!"

Lu Zhao frowned as he looked at Lin Che's pained expression. "Try to suppress him with your mental power, Lin Che. Concentrate and don't let Ye control your body."

Lin Che took a deep breath, trying to control his consciousness. But he quickly gave up and shook his head helplessly.

"It's no use... He's too powerful... I'm losing myself."

Su Wanqing felt a sudden urgency and then thought of something. She quickly opened the jade bracelet on her wrist and tried to store the sample in the space inside the bracelet.

However, just as she tried to activate her spatial abilities, the jade bracelet suddenly began to vibrate violently, and the surrounding air seemed to freeze.

"What's going on?" Lu Zhao asked in surprise.

"The space within the jade bracelet seems a bit unstable..." Su Wanqing said, frowning.

"During the storage of the sample, the internal materials experienced slight vibrations. It seemed unable to withstand a large energy impact."

She carefully deactivated the jade bracelet's spatial abilities, watching the blue light flickering on it, a sense of unease creeping into her heart.

Although this jade bracelet is powerful, it seems to have its own limitations.

“It seems we can’t rely on the jade bracelet,” Lu Zhao said. “We need to find a safer way to handle these samples. I suggest we use mechanical devices to simulate the sample diffusion mechanism and try to crack its sensing source.”

Just then, Xiao Ran strode into the laboratory, his face clearly showing anger.

"What are you guys up to here? Still studying those dangerous samples?"

Su Wanqing turned around and looked at Xiao Ran. "We are analyzing the characteristics of the sample, trying to find a way to control it."

“Control?” Xiao Ran sneered. “You have no idea how dangerous those things are! Your research will only make things worse! I told you long ago, we should just burn those samples and wipe them out completely!”

“Burning the samples will only complicate matters,” Lu Zhao said. “Those samples are highly radioactive; burning them will only accelerate the spread of the gas, affecting more zombies.”

"You're always making excuses!" Xiao Ran roared. "You're too cautious, too conservative! If you continue to delay like this, we will face even greater danger!"

"I'll go and investigate the sample issue myself," Xiao Ran said with unwavering determination.

“I have some clues about the coordinates, which may hold the source of the sample. You continue your research here; I will proceed alone.”

Su Wanqing knew Xiao Ran's personality well; once he made up his mind, it was difficult to change it.

She sighed and said, "Xiao Ran, you're being too impulsive. The situation at the base is very complicated right now, and it's too dangerous for you to act alone."

"Danger? I'm a special forces king who has survived countless life-or-death trials! What kind of danger haven't I experienced?" Xiao Ran said disdainfully.

"You don't need to worry about me, I just need to complete my mission."

“I oppose your decision,” Su Wanqing said firmly. “You must follow my orders and act with the other team members.”

"What right do you have to order me around?" Xiao Ran's voice was full of provocation.

"You're just someone who survived by sheer luck; you have absolutely no ability to lead a team!"

Lu Zhao tried to mediate, saying, "Xiao Ran, calm down. Su Wanqing said that for everyone's good. We are a team and should cooperate with each other."

"Cooperate?" Xiao Ran scoffed. "I don't need to cooperate with you! I just need to find the truth and protect my sister!"

He paused, then continued, "You can continue wasting your time here. I won't argue with you anymore." With that, he turned and left the laboratory, heading towards the perimeter of the base.

Su Wanqing watched Xiao Ran's departing figure, her heart filled with helplessness.

She knew that Xiao Ran's sister's disappearance was his greatest pain, and he had been searching for her ever since.

But now, he is blinded by anger and obsession, and is becoming increasingly impulsive.

“We can’t let him go alone,” Lu Zhao said. “His emotions are very unstable right now, and he could easily run into danger.”

Su Wanqing nodded. "I agree with you. We must find Xiao Ran as soon as possible and stop him from acting rashly."

"Lin Che, how are you feeling right now?" Lu Zhao turned around and looked at Lin Che.

"Can you help us track Xiao Ran's movements?"

Lin Che shook his head and said painfully, "I...I can't help you...Night has completely taken control of my consciousness...I can only feel endless darkness..."

Su Wanqing and Lu Zhao exchanged a glance, both filled with worry.

They knew the challenges they faced were growing. They not only had to contend with the threat of zombies, but also with a crisis lurking within the team itself.

Lu Zhao activated the monitoring system on the computer and began tracking Xiao Ran's movements.

He quickly analyzed the data, trying to find Xiao Ran's destination.

“He headed northwest of the base,” Lu Zhao said.

"That's an abandoned industrial area with a huge number of zombies. In addition, there's a lot of toxic gas going around there."

Su Wanqing's heart tightened. "We must get there as soon as possible and stop Xiao Ran."
